4/24/2024 - bergkamp10 wrote: 90 pointsVery enjoyable. Straw yellow in the glass, deep color. Delicate nose, cut apples with some pear with a hint of tropical fruit. Round and mouth filling on the palate, lemon zest, apple and pear with a smoky almond note on the finish. Rich and quite long. There’s a refined oxidative character combined with a textured mouthfeel that makes this a pretty interesting and complex wine. |

4/2/2024 - henryfriendly Likes this wine: NRA little bit of brett on the nose—frankly a lot coming from the decanter, but less in glass—leather, cherry, and something floral, violets maybe, as well. Palate is similar, with a little chocolate and plum or prunes as well. Finish is sneaky long. This isn’t showy and it’s definitely funky, but I like it. Blind I mistook it for Nebbiolo, which doesn’t feel too far from the mark as this has some flavors I associate with older Barolo. |

3/22/2024 - MindMuse Likes this wine: 91 pointsOf two bottles, first I had was 12 years old in 2012 (see note) and I held on to the second for another 12 years. Was better at age 12 than 24, but still rather good. This bottle persists with exotic aromatics and rustic flavor profile, minus the freshness and without any necessary additional tertiary complexity. No VA. Guess I should look to open the 2002s. |

3/26/2024 - quaffnov Likes this wine: 92 pointsHour decant, this is a structured wine, popping with high acidity and tannins that are smooth enough to not distract. Cherry and herbs are the main push palate wise, with a lighter bodied mouthfeel and a medium finish. I am a fan of structure and this delivers. |

3/2/2024 - PaulusLoZebra Likes this wine: 92 pointsMy third bottle of Lotto CLR 25, this time it was decanted for three hours and was even better than I remembered. Complex, structured, savory, deeply satisfying Etna red with an outstanding QPR. This lotto should hold for many years in the cellar. |

3/2/2024 - PaulusLoZebra Likes this wine: 93 pointsMy first bottle in over three years, this (L MS1) is drinking beautifully. It was decanted for three hours and has all the characteristics of Calabretta's interpretation of Nerello Mascalese, albeit for this vintage in a relatively lighter, less rustic and more elegant version than usual. Sweet and sour cherry, raspberry, a hint of mint/rosemary, a pleasing light antiseptic note, white pepper and raw steak, medium+ body, good acid and tannin structure and a nice mineral finish. Outstanding QPR, drink to 2030. |

2/5/2024 - PaulusLoZebra Likes this wine: 92 pointsMy second bottle of Lotto CLR 25, and it's fabulous, just as good but slightly different from the first bottle. This is a bit more ephemeral, less obvious dark fruits, but the same complexity, savoriness, sappiness, and big acid and tannin structure. Outstanding QPR. |

1/26/2024 - Mleh Likes this wine: 94 pointsNeeded about 40mins of air to open up. Nose was almost like an aged Bordeaux. Cigar box, dark fruit with subtle oak and vanilla. Palate was medium+ acidity, surprisingly high tannin for the age, but luscious dark fruit and earth. Was excellent with pasta and a rich meat sauce. These and amazing value. |

1/19/2024 - vinojones wrote: 87 pointsDark Ruby: agree with saxman1984 comment, strong new leather/baseball (oiled) glove nose which blows off fairly quickly. and leaves cherry impression;medium body with prominent, but soft tannin, mid palate flavors area little vegetal and green; finish is fast leaving a vegetal rather than fruity finish |

3/15/2023 - KeithAkers wrote: 88 pointsThe nose is savory and open-knit with tones of crushed rocks, savory herbs, sour red cherries, raspberries, rose petals, earth notes, and some crushed flowers. There is good depth with a sense of style here with an overall understated quality to the nose. The Medium bodied feel is balanced with tart, medium+ acidity and slightly coarse, medium tannins. This is a fun wine to try and get a wider view of what Sicily can bring. That said, it does lack a bit on the palate and nose in the depth and complexity category and is more as a fun one-off than anything I want to drink repeatedly. |

1/15/2024 - PaulusLoZebra Likes this wine: 93 pointsMy fifth bottle, this (L MS1) was decanted one hour before dinner and served over three nights; equally good on all three nights, even if the wine did change. This is a classic Calabretta NMVV, the pinnacle of rustic Etna. It took about ten minutes for the initial funk to blow off. This has a very complex aromatic and flavor profile. It is animal, earthy and rustic, with intense aromas of sweet cherry, leather, oregano, exotic spices, bitter orange and smoke. It has a medium+ body wine supported by a big acid and tannin structure, with beauitifully integrated, fine tannins. It is very savory, sappy and very long, a great wine for sipping. Outstanding QPR. Drink to 2030? |

1/10/2024 - hotdogbudget Likes this wine: NRA savory and complex wine on the nose and palate. Tough to describe and that’s what is so intriguing. Light on its feet but has depth to its flavor. Fresh acidity but the fruit somehow still has a raisinated quality in a pleasant way - there is no sweetness here whatsoever. Notes of spices, dried flowers, smoke and cheese. But none of it is front and center. At the price point, a masterpiece for those who like rustic wines that go with food and while you are waiting to eat. Gets better as it opens up |

1/9/2024 - PaulusLoZebra Likes this wine: 92 pointsMy first bottle of the Lotto CLR 25, this is as good a Cala Cala as I can remember, as good as the CLR14. Consumed over three nights. On night one, 1/3 of the bottle was decanted and aerated, and the rest stored in the bottle without gas or vacuuming. It was great all three nights, best on night one because of the amazingly complex aromatics, and gaining heft, sweetness, tannins and earthiness on nights two and three. Typical translucent color and typical Calabretta cornucopia of aromas and flavors, including dark spices and a very pleasing medicinal note. It has great structure, from big acids and tannins, and a wild, exuberant personality, and a typical 14.5% ABV. It has a long, long finish of beetroot and peach pits. A wine for sipping. Outstanding QPR. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (7) |

12/2/2023 - sleepyhaus wrote: NRStill strangely tart and lean for this wine. I don't normally mind that, and it's on brand for Nerello, but not what I expect from Calabretta VV, which is usually a deep, complex wine. This is rather simple. The '11, which I had before this and still have one bottle left of, is far superior IMO. |

On palate, strawberry, licorice, sweet/sour cherry and iron notes on palate. Medium body, medium acidity and integrated tannins with a very long finish. Loved this. Need to buy some more current vintages. 94+/- |

11/19/2023 - PaulusLoZebra wrote: flawedIt’s been almost three years since my last bottle (L MS1). This one had many of the wonderful characteristics of previous bottles, but it also had a strong presence of Brett, despite decanting it 2 hours before dinner. We all drank it despite the Brett, such is the quality of the wine, and some guests were more bothered than others. Some found the flavor just an overly aggressive version of a pleasing barnyard characteristic, others found it unacceptable after a half glass. Overall, it was a big disappointment. I have quite a few left in the cellar, so I am praying that this was bottle variation ! A glass was stored in the fridge overnight but even 24 hours of air did not change the wine. |
