2004 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia

Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more

A tale of 2 Tempranillo, pt 1. (Actually 75% Tempranillo plus Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano). Smooth yet penetrating red cherry flavors, framed by dried berries and mild tobacco. Served with a hearty Spanish meatball dish with browned Maitake & Blue Oyster mushrooms and the tertiary complexity from aging was a welcome shroomy/umami complement. Loving the Tondonia at age 20 (or more) & grabbing some 09 I see as a pre-arrival sale item to fill this cellar slot. A fun contrast with the young Impulsivo that followed, I'm publishing that note 1st so this one can be CT TN# 3000, having started this habit when the 04 CA vintage was in the channel. :)

1 hour decant. Mid-red with a hint of a fading rim. Delightful nose with notes of cherries, dark berries, tobacco and just a hint of cedar wood. Blackberries and cherries on the palate, supported by fine grained tannins and undertows of tobacco notes. Sweet long finish. Lovely wine.

Mahogany in the glass with a touch of bricking at the rim. Aromas of cigar box, purple flowers, cherry, clove, light leather notes, balsamic, and tomato leaf. Palate carries over, bringing in some black pepper. Finish goes on for about a minute. Tannins are present, but not overriding. I think I prefer the 2008 so far, but this is a really nice bottle with many years of great drinking ahead. Was great PnP, drank over several hours decanted. If I opened another bottle tomorrow I'd probably decant for at least 2 hours. Last glass was the best.

Pours deep gold. Grilled pineapple, beeswax, citronella, and turned earth on the nose. Palate brings in some Meyer lemon rind, razor sharp acidity, and fairly robust body. Great now, but no hurry.

Not your classic Rioja, medium color and fresh acidity. Cherry flavors and almost a touch like a Pinot. I really enjoyed it as the wine has character. Used a Pinot glass from Zalto to unleash all flavors.

6/6, not decanted.
Pale/medium garnet/mahogany core, wide pale rim. Aromatic, developed nose, leather, spice, dried red fruit, smoke. Touch of liquorice. Light/medium bodied, elegant and fine boned but with real depth, dried red fruit, leather, spice, fine still lightly firm tannins, vibrant acidity, touch of orange rind along with the spice on a very good length finish. Outstanding, drinking beautifully though no particular hurry.

Lovely but too early. Hopefully with some age the palate will pack a punch worthy of its already-promising nose.

Four months after the prior: Again, more sweet vanilla oak than we’ve expected from prior vintages — but this is just so friendly, it works. Decent acid backbone. Very enjoyable over four nights, gassed in between.

Dark, dark golden amber. Almost dark brown, like an ancient Vouvray. The fragrance is soaring, explosive. Crushed hazelnuts, toasted almonds, root vegetables like parsnips and jerusalem artichokes. Impeccable delineation and precision. This is surely one of the world's greatest white wines - the pinnacle of human achievement. A transcendental wine, a work of art. I'm not sure how many better whites there are on the planet - not many.

This is already in a great place. Bright nose of mature cherry, pepper and wood. Balanced palate with refreshing acidity. Hints of leather and old house lend complexity to the perfectly mature fruit. The tannins are a bit drying but everything else says this wine is in its zone. A good one to drink while the deeper vintages age. This will certainly last a long while but I don't see the depth for added complexity in the future. Very nice.

Nose is medicinal cherry, herb, a bit of earth, chocolate. Palate - strawberry, cherry, tobacco, grippy tannins. I think this wine has a lot of life ahead of it. Great now, but probably very good in 5-10 years.

Roasted cashews and hazelnuts, dried apricots, toast, freshly-sanded wood, ground cumin, goat cheese, light honey, and a touch of acetaldehyde-like (fino sherry) aroma. Waxy texture with M+ body. A pleasant slight phenolic grip. Has age and tertiary aromas, but high balanced acid keeps it lively. Tremendous complexity and personality. It is a unique wine, which I personally love. I was careful to avoid light strike damaging the wine in the clear bottle.

Bitter cherries, orange peel, oxidized notes, plenty of herbs, sound local feel, good acidity; excentric wine, certainly a food wine.

Got burned for $29 at ABC on Marco Island but will buy a few from B-21 at $21.99 when I get home. Excellent QPR. Doesn’t have the depth or structure of the LdH Bosconia which is $8 a bottle more. For camping or serving to non wine friends this is excellent. You can never have too many great $20-$22 bottles around for everyday drinking. Nice Rioja acidity that will carry this wine for many years.

Okay, yes. I've tried Tondonia a few times now and although I've enjoyed it, I never fully got the hype. Based on my notes, a number of folks suggested I try Bosconia, and I can see why. This was definitely more appealing to me; it still shows really powerfully obvious old-school Rioja character, but with a much greater sense of balance, precision, and outright deliciousness for my palate than Tondonia (I know they fulfill different needs for wine lovers, and that's great.) This was very structured, slightly rustic and austere (by design), but not difficult to love at all.

Loads of blackened fruit, much clearer fruit than in Tondonia, with fig jam and plum paste on the nose, and a notably brighter sort of cherry liqueur or even blood orange on the palate. Best of all, it's not all "dried fruit" as with other classical Rioja; there's a definite sense of freshness to accompany the softer, semi-dried tones. Large doses of old leather and fresh cut cedar planks round it off. Maybe a *touch* of that American oak coconut vibe, but it's more earthy than that. The tannins are powerful, but creamy and becoming largely integrated. Not too chalky or dusty.

Obviously this could age quite a bit longer, but I'm inclined to suggest drinking it within the next few years. For me, the presence of actual, clear fruit in a classic Rioja was something to celebrate. I think I still slightly prefer Viña Ardanza for a similar price and style, but not enough to rate it higher. We enjoyed this while listening to old Paco de Lucía recordings for a beautiful, clichéd evening.

Sherry-like oxidized nose, it reveals much more in the mouth and beyond. Beautiful crystallized strawberry. Extremely hard to describe. Very very good.

Iron, old books, fresh cherries, hints of coconut flakes, oregano, especially in the empty glass. Incredibly youthful palate, still vibrant acidity and intense cherry fruit, you'd never guess this is a 20 year old wine; lovely transparency and a light, somewhat airy texture with still lots of very fine tannins. Top vintage of Bosconia. 18/20

Medium garnet.
Unexceptional nose, a little black fruit, vanilla & leather.
Medium bodied, low tannins.
Didn’t get much primary fruit on the palate. Cedar, earth, mushrooms mainly.
Decanted for a couple of hours prior to tasting (following advice/comments received from fellow CT members after my Tondonia 2006 tasting note last evening-for which thankyou.)
Struggling with the RP 96 rating.
First bottle of a case so it will be interesting to see how this evolves/develops over the next 5-10 years.

Color is copper. On the nose: Strawberry, minerals, stone fruits. On the palate: Sherry like , almonds, strawberry, minerals , peach apricot and apple, rose and dry tannins. This is excellent. I don’t drink Rose often and really wanted to try some Iberian Rose’s. This was recommended by my wine store go to guy. Really good.
