Wow, a great example of an aged Barossa Shiraz. Full bodied with soft tannins. Stewed plum, cherry with vanilla and cinnamon undertones. Enjoyed with slow roasted lamb for Easter Sunday lunch.

Pitch dark and still very young-looking in the glass. nose somewhat restrained, but plums and a lavender poured out after a good swirl. In the palate this is dense, with youthful acidity, black pepper, plums, bramble, earthy notes - still fresh and young, with medium tannins and a long ending with oak in it.
High-quality Australian Shiraz for sure - I had high expectations and this bottle met them all. 2002 is clearly a great vintage for Australia - and I am happy I have 5 more bottles of this beauty. Great now, will continue to develop for a while IMO and while last at least another decade at peak.

One of the few wines from Colonial Estate I've had that does not suffer from being ponderous, where the heaviness suffocates brightness, vivacity, and freshness, akin to someone's butt sitting on your face. The nose is laced with inviting rather than mushy fruit. The tannin is actually drying instead of being sticky tar. The acidity makes the wine self-cleaning instead of being cloying. The alcohol is barely noticeable rather than leaving a burn everywhere. Blackberry and black currant make the wine delicious. Overall, a big, smooth, and concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon that is delightfully enjoyable, that could pass for being from Howell Mountain or Spring Mountain in Napa California.

Nearly four years since last bottle, and this my last….

Cork broke on removal, otherwise no further sig of aging; still hints of browning on rim, but fruit, acidity and tannins still holding well, so good for a few years yet

Decanted one hour

Perfect with peppersteak casserole

Good mouth filling wine with oak finish. I like it but find it difficult to define. This is young but I am not sure that it is a candidate for years of cellaring. We will see

Bruiser, plump and concentrated, brambly, jammy, slightly peppery and potpourri scented. Thick. A real cocktail of a wine, in terms of alcohol. Well constructed, but hard to imagine enjoying more than a glass or two.

Big powerful wine. Nose was pure blackberry, palate was unctuous/mouth coating with some heat, but lots of dark fruit and fragrant cedar/cigar. Excellent bottle.

Colonial Estate Emigre 2002 & 2003

Tasted both in the form of magnums. I've always found this to be quite an interesting wine. To be honest I was never a fan of Australian Shiraz, always thought that it's a little too heavy and on the sweet side for my palate. The Emigre I would say is also quite heavy and sweet, nevertheless I do believe that their advertised French influence in wine making made a difference. This Barossa Valley winery started off as a venture of the English wine maker Jonathan Maltus who made his name with Le Dome from St. Emilion. I believe he's no longer in charge of the estate now but certainly 2002 and 2003 I believe were his first 2 vintages. Despite only 1 year apart, the 02 had very strong notes of cinnamon, coffee and some spices, the 03 in comparison was much more fruit forward and more ripe (I believe this has something to do with the exceptionally hot weather in 03). Both wines are at 15.5% ABV (this high alcohol content seems to be a typical Shiraz thing) but I would consider this to be quite elegant for Barossa Valley. I liked both wines and they would make a good casual drink. Should work nicely with bbq meat or some of the heavier food.

Fantastic. Decanted the sediment, let it sit for about 30 mins. Drank with med rare beef. Did not seem like it would last much longer but for the first 5 years of storage it was in a pretty warm cellar.

Cork in good condition, and decanted off the sediment.
Medium+ colour, garnet with some browning.
Nose was intense with: sweet blackcurrant; sandal wood; pomegranate.
High alcohol but well balanced and warming. Full bodied and opulent. Medium+ tannin. Medium- acidity.
Prune and mulberry flavours with a long finish.
This is better than just describing it as a big aussie wine done well, however, it would be better with some more acidity and some more tertiary flavours. It has several years ahead of it.
Put the remainder in the fridge and had the next day. Less aroma and more flavour. Green and black olives on the nose. Black plum flavours.

Blind tasting at wine night with Prime Rib served. Below are the contestants, the list is how they finished, highest to lowest, for me personally and although all wines were very, very good some were just simply better than others but all paired extremely well with the meal.

2007 Joseph Phelps Insignia – Typical Insignia, spectacular.

2004 Colonial Estate Exile – As always, simply excellent.

2008 Don Melchor – This blind tasting showed it can hold its own with the big boys.

2010 Auma – My first experience with this Carménère blend and it was awesome!

2007 Dunn Howell Mountain Cab – First time with the Howell Mountain and was somewhat disappointed. I was really expecting more BOOM from this but it just didn’t knock my socks off.

2017 Cade Howell Mountain Cab – Again, not sure why but the Howell Mountains just didn’t perform as well as they have previously.

1997 BV Tapestry – Although it was a magnum and should’ve aged slower than a typical bottle I believe this was slightly past its prime. Still extremely good, just not one of the best sips of the night.

2005 Colonial Estate Explorateur – I truly enjoyed this wine, it was just sweeter in flavor and just a large drop off from the other Colonial Estate enjoyed this night.

Folks, I actually liked this wine when it was young. This Magnum had been properly stored, and was in perfect condition - full level, cork was clean, no faults, and great dark red colour. Nose was full of red and black fruit, an in the decanter, the black fruit started to show thru more with air.

The palate was too alcoholic and with a rather dry, tannic and slightly bitter aftertaste. Fruit showed aged Syrah characters typical of the Barossa - dark berries, a touch of licorice and pepper. Yet the wine lacks any sense of balance, freshness or complexity and I think I should have drunk it 10 years ago. The red fruit and spice I recalled from prior bottles had gone, with the wine being simply too high in alcohol (15.5%). Whilst a crust had been thrown, it was still quite tannic and slightly bitter at the end.

This was quite an expensive wine and I was very disappointed it had developed badly. Yet in 2021, I am finding high alcohol wines to be virtually always be underwhelming.
