This wine was excellent! Tannis are soft, the wines is balanced and two hours after opening the wine continued to express the complexity of the vintage. Drink now or sell to me.

5/4/2024 - La Cave d'Argent Likes this wine: 93 points

Wine Spectator Grand Tour (Las Vegas, NV): Conterno's 2018 Barolo Bussia is a medium garnet wine that flaunts scents of red currants, dark plums, orange zest, apricots, rose petals, baking spices and tobacco. Medium-bodied, freshly acidic, lightly oaked and with well-integrated alcohol (14.5%), it delivers comparable flavors. For the most part, the powdery tannins lurk quietly, not really flexing their grip until the late mid-palate and long finish. Although enjoyable now, a bit more time in the cellar will be beneficial. Drink 2027-2043.

Ruby red with light brown edges. This was double decanted and recorded about 10 hours before consumption. The bottle including the cork was in excellent condition. Complex aromatics of dried cherries, leather, roasted meat, and tar. Lovely balance and length. This was drinking very well at this point in its evolution. A real pleasure! My thanks to DR who gave this to me years ago for a birthday present.

Drank at home, bottle decanted for 6 hours.
Performing well, with medium to medium plus intensity on nose and palate, medium finish. Youthful, tannin still there but acceptable after 6 hours decanting. Can drink now with adequate decanting.

Found this for 24 EUR in an online shop and said okay, for that price one must give it a try.

Unfortunately, 3 hours after opening, while there's nothing really wrong with it, it confirms the rather meagre experience of our Barolo trip last year.

In the glass it looks light, with rusty tones. The scent is really nice (albeit rather simple): classical Nebbiolo with just a touch of wood.

In taste, this is decent and nice, but nothing more. Medium intensity, rather simple as it is, and very little aftertaste.

This is a simple, Tuesday evening-wine. Looking at e.g. Montalcino, this is the quality and general class of a slightly below-average Rosso di Montalcino. Lightyears from a Brunello.

But in Piemonte, this bears the highest designation possible and that doesn't feel right. I'd expect a regular, plain Nebbiolo which costs 12, maybe 14 EUR, to be like this (of course most regular Nebbiolos cost way more than 12-14 EUR and are much worse than this).

So, alas, 24 EUR is way too much for what it is; qualitywise we are in 10-15 EUR territory here -- and I'm struggling to understand why the market is prepared to pay these prices for the Nebbiolos.

Decanted a magnum for an hour. Maybe I should have decanted for a bit longer but the wine opened up beautifully in the glass. Delicious and a relative bargain.

Fruit has faded a bit. Light cherry, dried roses, a bit metallic. I think it is worth drinking on its own. It might get lost with intense food.

Decanted for 1-2 hours as we dove into it.....similar to past bottles. What is very intriguing is that it does not degrade at any point through the night over 5-6 hours of air. It's light in the glass, light on its feet and just beautiful cherry, licorice and leather on the palate. What great qpr with this one........

Intense ruby colour. Pronounced nose of cherry, raspberry jam, balsamic, sage, liquorice, dried rose, violet, smoke, black pepper, gunmetal, lipstick. It’s intense and perfectly balance, with a load of acidify, high alcohol and grippy tannins, but nothing is out of place. Still plenty of fruit but with lovely savoury notes. It’s excellent. I’d probably drink it after a meal rather than with it - sit back and luxuriate in it.

Bold tannins strike me most with this wine. But that made a wonderful pairing with braised short ribs. A fine Barolo.

The wine's initial nose was tar and orange peel but with air-added perfumed red fruit. It took three hours to open up and bring the fruit out. The mouth is red fruit, plum , and tertiary notes and good minerality. Length was medium, tannins and acidity are medium/medium + The wine paired well with pasta and fresh crushed tomatoes.

2010 Barolos at Terra Rossa with NLWTS (Terra Rossa, Upper Street): Evolved ruby. Nose really lifted. Very ‘middle of the road’, at least in this esteemed company. But still quintessential/typical barolo. Super strong core of tannins. Balanced. This is great for the price.

2010 Barolos at Terra Rossa with NLWTS (Terra Rossa, Upper Street): Ruby. Pretty fruit forward. On the stewed fruit spectrum? Sweet, pretty generous nose, but quite hot on the palate. Bit disappointing for me; bit bruising. Benefit of the doubt - NYR? 90

2010 Barolos at Terra Rossa with NLWTS (Terra Rossa, Upper Street): Mid Ruby. Entirely red fruited (underripe strawberries for me) on the nose; sweet but not confected. Some florality, cinnamon. Tannins obviously significant but feel well integrated. Palate is a bit more restrained,; feels as though there’s more to come. This is lovely; nose particularly so. 93+

This was my first experience with this producer and the first 2018 Barolo, which are apparently drinking very well. I was generally impressed on both fronts. The wine has a dark garnet ruby color right now with medium level transparency at the rim. Nose is pretty typical Barolo and definitely evolved over the course of the evening: dark cherry, spearmint and fresh herbs which eventually transitioned into a bit more tar and roses as the wine opened up. High degree of acidity present early on also blew off but was not misplaced, as it adds to the structure of the wine. Notes of iron and just a trace of roasted red pepper on the finish completed the cycle. Drank over four hours without decanting (we weren’t sure we’d finish it), I’m generally impressed with this winemaker and will try again! I think this is a potential 93-94 in five years. Excellent price point too.
