Dinner with 4 wines from Pauillac, 3 from 2019, 1 from 2020. Opened the wines on Sunday and the wines are to be consumed tonight, 7 days later.

-Pontet Canet, 2019: PC did not impress. "Sweet with heat", I would call it. Went back and forth, but never got the impression this was a great wine. 2017 was a lot better. 92 pts.
-Lynch Bages, 2019: A very good wine. I was very impressed by the 2017, and I ask myself if this is a better wine? Probably in the long run. 94-96 pts (2017 - 96 pts).
-Pichon-Longueville Baron, 2019: Probably slight better than the Lynch Bages. This should be grand. 96-97 pts.
-Clerc Milon, 2020: A very solid, high quality no fuzz Pauillac. 94 pts, but could ad a point or two with bottle age. Slightly lighter than the other wines

Neon red in color.

Fresh cherries on the nose.

Light to medium in body with high acidity.

Dry on the palate with fresh cherries, strawberries and peppercorn.

Short finish with grippy tannins and tart cranberries.

Feels like a Dolcetto with big tannins.

Unbalanced and too tart for me.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

82 Points.

Deep violet ruby, translucent to opaque, unfiltered. On pouring, expressive on the nose with sweet baking spices, star anise and raspberry seed, but almost immediately closes down to give very little. Needs a lot of air to give fleeting glimpses of black velvety rose petals and ripe raspberry flesh. Medium acid, slightly furry tannins, hint of methoxypyrazine greenness. Extremely restrained palate, a bit of underripe dark fruit and bitter pithiness. A bit too lean, not great length. I think this is closed down, so will wait a few more years to open the next one. Not loving it at present, very ungiving.

Decent enough but no great shakes. Some cigar box, blackcurrant pastille, smoke. Mid weight though a decent amount of mid-palate power. Rather dilute finish and all a bit meh, really. Not great value at £27 ish.

Surprisingly very good. This was the product of smoke taint taking out the usual beechwood source. It’s a delicately put together tassie PN. Lively and bright red fruits, a touch of cherry but further down the spectrum of red currant and strawberry. Caught me offguard and for the better.

Wonderful to find an aglianico of quality and modest price that drinks well so young.

So, there are some powerful drying tannins. But decant it early and drink with food, and they are entirely tolerable. And the lovely fruit that comes through. Sceg, we learn is a dialect word for pomegranate, and this definitely has some reminiscence of those, the kind with dark red juice.

I was a bit worried I had ordered something to be delivered to early, relying on some tasting notes here that it drinks well already. I think this is a drinker.

I ended up drinking over 4 days. It was best on the 2nd day and falling apart a bit on the 4th day.

Just arrived, first bottle from two full cases. Decanted to blow off some mild reduction. Stylistically a cross between the cool 2021 and the succulent 2022, although it is perhaps closer to the former. Very youthful obviously, and it will need some time to come together and expand, the bitters on the tight finish are still quite prominent. The overall balance and weight (13.5% ABV) are impeccable however, the texture is silky and seamless, and the fruit is pure and beautifully layered. Based on my experience with the 2021 (which is now drinking beautifully), I will keep this for the summer of 2026.

Excelente.

This is just pure nectar drops of Gods, made from single varietal of Vidal which are naturally frozen on the vine and harvested once the temperature is below 10 degrees of Celsius. Fermented and aged for 14 weeks in new FR oak barrels, 90% new, 272 g/l of RS, 10% abv. Medium golden colour. Intense concentrated aroma of apricots, orange peel, mango, pineapple, honey. Medium+ body, dense and unctuous, concentrated flavours echo with notes from aroma. Impeccably balanced and held together by crips high acidity.

An icon producer in Barossa and RWT is one of its brightest stars, started as a “Red Wine Trial”, became one of the most well known premium Shiraz worldwide. Aged for 16 months in FR oak, 64% new, the rest in 1 year old barrels. Intense concentrated rich aroma of blackberries, black cherries, sweet tobacco, ripe plums, eucalyptus, toast, mocha, mild cedar and fruitcake hints. Full body, powerful and concentrated, polished & velvety, explosive yet not overbearing deep flavours in sync with spiced peppery tannins.

2 years passed since I’ve tasted this blend of 67% CS, 12% Malbec, 8% Carmenere, 7% PV and 6% CF, aged for 22 months in FR oak barrels, 72% new. Feels bit more focused and pronounced, richer complexity with better flavour integration and balance. Medium+ intensity aroma of blackberries, cassis, sandalwood, cocoa, herbs, medicinal and meaty hints. Full body, broad shouldered and muscular with lush and savoury fruitiness in sync with fresh and tense structure, integrated medium acidity and medium+ sandy tannins.

Biodynamically grown grapes, a blend of 45% Grenache, 41% Cinsault, 5% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre and 4% Viognier, aged in new oak for 6 months on fine lees, no sulfites added. Pale salmon. Intense aroma of grapefruit peel, peaches, strawberries, roses, stone, red currants. Medium+ body, soft and velvety, creamy edges, good concentration, bright red fruits and refreshing medium+ acidity. All sounds decent till you hear that it costs over €200, seriously and honestly, one of the worst QPR’s I’ve ever tasted in wine.

Neither light nor heavy colour. Brett. Volatile palate, cranberries, dry tannins. How can they charge so much money for this? Faulty winemaking…

A blend of Syrah and Touriga Nacional from vineyards in and around the Colares region, partially destemmed. 14% alcohol, 2,3 g/l residual sugar, 4,9 g/l acidity and pH 3,54.

Completely opaque, deep purplish-black color. The nose feels ripe and dark-toned with aromas of blueberries, some plummy tones, a little bit of peppery spice, light blackberry tones and a floral hint of violets. The wine feels youthful, juicy and fruit-forward with a medium body and flavors of dark plums, some blueberry tones, a little bit of savory meaty character, light blackberry nuances, a hint of of ripe black cherry and a floral touch of violets. The overall feel is balanced but a bit on the soft side with its medium-to-moderately high acidity and ripe medium tannins. The finish is long, juicy and fruity with flavors of blueberries, some floral notes of violets, a little bit of dark plummy fruit, light black cherry tones, a hint of peppery spice and a touch of earth.

A juicy and balanced but also a bit soft and anonymous red. Good and enjoyable, but nothing particularly memorable. A pleasant and fruity Lisboa red that might evolve and improve with additional bottle age, but most likely won't turn into something interesting with aging. Excellent value at just 5,85€, though.

Young with blacberry, plum, oak and a floral-balsamic tone. Medium to full body in an elegant, mineral and fesh style. Drinkable now but will benefit from some time to round up tannins and add more conplexity to the massive primaty fruit. This is good stuff that shows the class of the vineyards in Valbuena-Pesquera de Duero.

Pall Mall 67, Singapore - Spanish Garnacha Themed tasting with producer Norrel Robertson. One of Norrel's wines who is a Scottish winemaker and MW now established since 2003 in Navarra where he farms vineyards predominantly planted to old Garnacha vines besides the occasional field blend. This wine is from Norrel's neighbour and fellow Navarran winemaker. This was the last wine a line-up of 9. Note taking was getting much less rigorous by that point such that I only see I had this as WOTN. Best balance of the evening between freshness, lift and palate presence/complexity with no obvious heat. I will be seeking actively to retaste this.

Splash decant. Deep dark intense magenta color. Raspberry, blueberry, cocoa, and anise. Tart, tongue drying palate. Firm tannins on the long finish.

A very nice couple shared a bottle of this with my wife and I after a wine dinner at Porter’s (College Station, TX). My score is just a placeholder because this really needs more air. It’s very well made. Palate was more tart than I expected.
