Flight 1 - Champagne (1 note)

White - Sparkling
1996 Agrapart Champagne Grand Cru Millésimé Brut Blanc de Blancs France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
87 points
Musk, unripe apple and yeast. Good and complex taste with very nice acidic structure. Perhaps a somewhat metallic finish. The finish is very long with apple flavors. Very pure, but too much yeast. Still very young

Flight 2 - Old red (1 note)

Just an odd bottle to start with. The owner expected that it was over the top, but served it blind for us to guess the age.

Red
1928 Château Lascombes France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
flawed
Very light with orange rim. Oxidized leafs on the nose. Over the top…. The first sip showed some promise, but already on the next it falls apart and dries out.

Flight 3 - Riesling (3 notes)

White
2001 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile France, Alsace
85 points
Immediately very open, with typical Alsatian characteristics. The fruit shuts a bit down after a while. Very pronounced acidic structure, lots of backbone but little flesh. Very mineral, nice finish.
White
2005 Weingut Keller Kirchspiel Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
88 points
Almost no color at all. Open nose with peaches and minerals (i.e. not dominated by textbook apple and lemon). It starts a bit sweet in the mouth, but has an excellent finish. The acid is there but could've been more upfront. Very concentrated. It develops nicely during the evening.
White
2001 Nigl Riesling Privat Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal
87 points
Pure Riesling nose, intense and dense. Very high acid levels with a somewhat burning finish. It isn't entirely out of balance, but a very good classical, yet powerful, Riesling.
Identical notes after four hours, it hadn't moved in any direction.. (is that good or bad?)

Flight 4 - Chardonay (3 notes)

Very impressive flight of chardonnays. Both the Vaillons and Chalumeaux were probably served a few years too young as they improved dramatically during the evening. The Corton was stunning from start to finish.

White
2004 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
88 points
Nice mineral nose, starts a bit simple but develops a lot during the course of the tasting. Probably the wine that improved the most, but fortunately my notes was from the initial taste. After some hours it drinks well now, but it would be a shame not to wait at least 3-4 more years
White
2002 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
91 points
Great nose of honey and oak. Incredibly rich, almost creamy. The mouth is better than the nose. Very concentrated and in perfect balance. Wine of the night?
White
2004 Domaine Matrot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chalumeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
88 points
Typical Chardonnay nose, but also quite a bit lemon on the nose. The taste is more restrained, but shows some minerals. Nice citric acid in the finish.

Flight 5 - The reds (7 notes)

Red
1999 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
I didn't get this one at all. For me it showed an almost synthetic nose and a very bitter taste. Dry with a fairly soft and short finish. The nose sweetens after a while. After about an hour it gradually transforms into more classical Bordeaux. Not rated.
Red
2005 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
91 points
Beautiful and very pure Pinot nose. Mature but typical cool climate fruit. Perfect balance and drinks perfectly well already.
Red
1999 Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo Ghemme Collis Breclemae Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Ghemme
90 points
Very muted immediately after opening, but improves dramatically throughout the evening. A massive wine with great nose and a typical Nebbiolo mouth feel, very dry tannins in the finish. Has great potential to stay at least another ten years if not more.

1999 Veenwouden Classic South Africa, Coastal Region, Paarl

Served a bit to cold? Nevertheless, at low temperature it comes across as an incredibly juicy wine with lots of fresh fruit. Throws a lot of sediment. Over time and at higher temperature it seems somewhat sweet with a metallic taste. Short finish.
Red
1994 Bodegas Muga Rioja Gran Reserva Prado Enea Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
87 points
Starts out very sweet with earthly elements. The taste follows with very earthy taste. Intense and in great balance. Blind I thought it was an oaked Barbaresco from a great producer. After some air it sweetens with vanilla notes, and the finish is somewhat unbalanced. Yet a very good wine which drinks very well at this stage.
Red
1997 Fontanabianca Barbaresco Sori Burdin Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
86 points
Oak on the nose, and intense fruit on the palate - yet it feels very drinkable and available. Great finish.
A great wine, but perhaps too much work done in the winery; over oaked and over extracted?

Flight 6 - Auslese (1 note)

White - Off-dry
1999 Balthasar Ress Hattenheimer Nußbrunnen Riesling Auslese Germany, Rheingau
88 points
Sweetish nose with hints of confined sweat (!), but fortunately also some lemon and peach. Very light on the palate, and not as sweet as expected. Drinks very well, but lacks some complexity and precision.
