Ritz Carlton, Amelia Island, FL

Introduction

We spend three nights at the Ritz for our friend's wedding, which coincided with our anniversary weekend.

Flight 1 - Day 1 - hanging out and dinner at Salt (4 notes)

We opened the Conundrum while hanging out in the room. The Dumol and Beauc were from the list at Salt, the nicer restaurant at the Ritz, which was quite good, albeit on the expensive side for wine. The O'shaugnessy was something of a nightcap while we watched the drama from another wedding unfold on the grass below our room. One of the Jacksonville Jaguars was having a wedding reception in the hotel's meeting rooms. One of the groom's guest was inebriated and angry, shouting, throwing things, and arguing with his girlfriend and his sister. Police were called, more drama ensues, somebody's mother faints, you get the idea.

13.5%(?) ABV. Medium gold in the glass. Spicy nose that reminds me of muscat. Somewhat sweet with a suggestion of nectar. Medium bodied, plump. Not bad for a warm day.

Served with a nice meal at Salt in the Ritz in Amelia Island, FL. Notes from memory. Overpriced from the list, but a nice Pinot. Dark in the glass. Suggestion of Soy Sauce on the nose but with brighter black cherry fruit on the palate. Full bodied and fairly lush as Pinot goes. Nice. Slightly outperformed an '06 Beaucastel CdP which followed it.

14.5% ABV. Notes from memory. Dark garnet, somewhat translucent in the glass. Somewhat reticent nose of light bark. Medium full bodied with dark berry fruit and a suggestion of mineral rich soil. Surprisingly approachable and clean. Nice. 91+.

2006 O'Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

Dark garnet, mostly opaque in the glass. Aromas of dark currants, moist tobacco, and subtle spices. Rich and very nicely balanced. Full bodied dark currant fruit and a suggestion of chocolate. Pretty approachable. I dig this. My first wine from this producer and I will be seeking them out again. Virtually unchanged the next day. Really solid Napa Cab.

Flight 2 - Poolside Rose and a starter ahead of the wedding ceremony. (2 notes)

We drank this poolside at the Ritz in Amelia Island, FL and it delivered for the occasion. Pleasantly consistent with previous vintages. Rather deeply colored pink in the glass. Light strawberry fruit. Medium bodied and pretty much dry. Tasty.

We were in Amelia Island FL to see our Friends D&L get married. The groom was biding his last single hour in the Ritz Carlton's presidential suite overlooking the beach where they were setting up for the service. We joined him for a glass of wine and I grabbed this, as it was all that was handy. Nice wine, but it didn't really capture the moment as we watched out the picture windows in a pretty amazing hotel room (ever seen a grand piano in a hotel room?). That said, 13% ABV. Pale straw in the glass. Great aromatics with super bright tropical kiwi and grapefruit. Medium bodied with sweet tart citrus flavors. Tasty.

Flight 3 - Celebrating our anniversary (2 notes)

We enjoyed these wines with cheeseburgers from room service (not up to the Ritz Dallas, but acceptable) celebrating our anniversary and watching the sunset.

Red
2007 Buccella Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley

14.6% ABV. Opaque dark black garnet in the glass. Youthful looking. A little primary at this stage with aromas of sweet currant fruit. Lush and opulent with more currant fruit on the palate. Full bodied but still pretty nicely balanced with secondary subtle mint and leather making an appearance. This is a nice cab, but I daresay I preferred the '06 O'shaugnessy we tasted the day prior just a hair (and for the money). 93-94+. I wouldn't hesitate to try one of these now if you have a couple bottles.
Red
2007 Carlisle Syrah Papa's Block USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
It was a mistake to open this when we did. It still needs time. 15% ABV. Somewhat translucent dark garnet. Strong roasting coffee beans on the nose. Earth. Roasted red fruit. Full bodied and rather closed with some meaty red fruit. This is still tight.

We also opened a Crios Torrontes and a Cliff Lede Sauv Blanc, but I didn't record any thoughts on those. Both were tasty enough.
