Introduction

A smaller group than usual but great wine selections

Flight 1 (9 notes)

White
2008 SlipStream Chardonnay Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
87 points
An interesting greenish-gold color. Floral delicate nose and smooth round palate but little if any oak. Quite crisp on the palate with a little pear and touch of green. Short simple finish. Struck me as more of a Sauvignon Blanc than chardonnay. Would be a nice refreshing drink in the Texas heat.
White
2008 d'Arenberg The Hermit Crab Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
90 points
This I liked quite a bit. Lovely floral nose with citrus, orange rinds, and melons. Quite acidic with more citrus and orange flavors with a hint of spice and healthy full finish of fruit flavors and stone. Crisp, fresh, and lively.
White
2005 Hugh Hamilton Verdelho The Trickster Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
88 points
Delicate pear nose with mild greenish hints. Crisp light palate, strong acidity. Light bodied but crisp and refreshing.
Red
2005 SlipStream Fastback Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
91 points
Huge nose, deep and rich with currants, plum, and berries and strong oak influence with cedar, vanilla, and roasted coffee. Palate is equal to the nose, staggering in size, but hides its alcohol well, prominent acidic attack and fine sweet tannins. Palate of mostly dark berries and coffee/earth flavors. Lengthy mocha, toast, and red berry finish. Concentrated and full bodied, but holding together well.
Red
2007 Yalumba Grenache Bush Vine Australia, South Australia, Barossa
88 points
Ripe round nose of plum, raspberry and cherry. palate is quite ripe and a little simple, with mostly fruit flavors and good spine of acidity, but lacking any earth flavors. Just simple red fruits. Medium finish. Well made and balanced, but disappointing complexity.
Red
2007 Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier Shiraz Viognier Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria
91 points
Smooth elegant nose with plum, meats, and currants and almost a hint of citrus. Fine tannin backbone and palate of raspberries and currants, and quite light on the palate with prominent acidity. Finish adds a little burnt toast with medium length. Ripe and round, but seemingly light on the palate with good complexity. Retrained.
Red
2003 Kaesler Shiraz The Bogan Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
90 points
Strong prominent nose of roasted coffee and toast, with plum and currants in the background. Fruit has a mildly roasted/dried flavor. Big palate, very smooth with lots of glycerin, dense concentrated fruit flavors and fine tannins. lengthy slightly firm finish with blackberries, raspberries, mocha and tar flavors hanging on.
Red
2005 Oliverhill Winery Shiraz Jimmy Section Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
88 points
Nose was rather closed and showing prominent alcohol and burnt toast with cedar box. Huge fruit filled palate with currants and berries, but slightly hot. Dark fruit and oak on the finish. Seemed overdone with prominent alcohol and fruit flavors overshadowed by oak, compared to the other wines.
Red
2008 Tait The Ball Buster Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
89 points
Big hot nose with olives, vanilla and berries. sweet rich soft palate, with plush tannins and lower acidity than the others. A touch of sweetness (residual sugar?). Good medium finish of mocha and earth along with dark fruit flavors. A touch of heat, but otherwise a fine QPR and wine to drink now.

The Slipstream shiraz was the group #1, with the kaesler Bogan close behind and no clear consensus for #3. Overall, very good wines on average.
