A visit to Luna (Napa)

Introduction

While in Napa, I stopped by their tasting room. I believe these wiens are tasting room only wines. Most were very good to outstanding although value may be an issue.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

Red
2006 Luna Vineyards Sangiovese Riserva USA, California, Napa Valley
89 points
Raspberries and earthiness on the nose. Light ruby in color. Lots of raspberries on the palate. I would never guess this to be sangiovese. Its very smooth, slightly yeasty and very nice. Quite easy to drink. At $50, I passed though.
Red
2005 Luna Vineyards Merlot Howell Mountain USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
84 points
Tart cherries on the nose. This is thin cherry juice. OK to drink but nothing special. $75 should be better.
Red
2006 Luna Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
This was quite good. The nose is a bit innocuous and tart red berries, but I bet some air would help. The palate was layered and complex with cassis and tree bark. A long finish and nice texture.
Red
2007 Luna Vineyards Petite Sirah Suisun Valley USA, California, North Coast, Suisun Valley
90 points
Another excellent wine. Purple/ruby in color. The nose is dusty with graphite and black raspberries. Silky, but slightly thin texture. Lots of tannins though. Black raspberries and blue berries on the palate. Nice acidity.
Red
2007 Luna Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon North Fork USA, California, Napa Valley
89 points
A very good wine but not worth the $110 price of admission. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose is dusty with cassis. Soft with some complexity. It starts great but then fades away. Clipped, thin finish. Its very accessible.
Red
2007 Luna Vineyards Red Wine USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
This was the best value of the bunch. $40 for an excellent Cab/Merlot blend. Dusty cherries on the nose. Silky texture. Smooth cherries on the palate. Long, slightly minty finish.
