Flight 1 (3 notes)

Orange
2003 Radikon Ribolla Gialla Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT
93 points
nose: musty, smoky, oxidized (obviously) with turpentine-lite characteristics
palate: I could not get over how similar to a red wine this is. Thinner on the palate than expected, given the headiness of the nose, but with dry, ruddy (almost rubber-skid feel) tannin and sherried citrus to end. Fasincating, fantastic, and oh-so easy to pair with food. Amazing stuff. Why is this the first time I've tried it???
White
2009 Château Ducasse Blanc France, Bordeaux
87 points
nose: sweetly fruited
palate: not sweet, limestoney in essence. dissappeared on the palate, but resurged with a finish of citrus. OK, and though a bargain at its price point, I feel like it is unoriginal enough to pass by. Then again, it is very balanced...just boring to me.86-87
Red
2008 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
92 points
nose: smoky, spicy, warm strawberry
palate: perfect presence and balance, super soft mouthfeel...I would almost use the term "ethereal" if it didn't seem so ridiculous. The tannin is finely integrated, without crazy acid of a young burg. Quite lovely long finish of pomegranate and rhubarb and all those alter-red-fruits. Very, very nice wine.

Flight 2 (6 notes)

Red
1999 Silvio Grasso Barolo Vigna Giachini Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
well, this rocked the house tonight.
nose: perfumed, with licorice and deep, dark, sexy tones
palate: super smooth mouthfeel, INTENSE tannin and an all around lovely bottle with roses, tar, everything you want in Barolo. Really showed well tonight - so sad I have no more.
Red
1997 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
nose: a little musty, with violets, sweet prunes and...the unmistakable aroma of rooibos tea.
palate: reminds me of South Africa, the rooibos tea nuance is overpowering. I thought the palate was a bit empty, perhaps because my senses were still reeling from the tea attack. Palatable, and nice...but not a showstopper for me.
Red
1997 Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
nose: some tar, but overall a silent nose
palate: high acid, red, sappy twizzler fruit, but sort of a bitter, dissappearing wine. Either there was NOT MUCH THERE or it was way young. I didn't get the fuss. Some seemed to think this would improve with time. I sure hope so. Get this wallflower out of the hall way and into the party. NR for lack of material to work with.
Red
2000 Paolo Scavino Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
88 points
nose: dirty, blackened, metal?, and at times I sensed a bit of VA
palate: roses, red fruits...the acid and tannin seemed more disparate/separate and less integrated than in other wines alongside. I would suggest this sit a bit, but then I saw the vintage...what do I know?
Red
2001 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Asili Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
nose: a bit of funk, with ripened fruit
palate: cherry, lighter with lower tannin than the barolos tasted alongside. Easy to drink - harder to evaluate next to the barolo-fest, though it stood out clearly as another entity. I enjoyed it, but I'd like to revisit in a different setting.
Red
2001 Eugenio Bocchino Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Holy Cow, was this phenomenal. nose of sweet oak and cinnamon and the palate was just gorgeous. Yowza.
