Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Gardet Champagne Brut Cuvée Saint Flavy France, Champagne
89 points
Tasted blind – light straw in colour. At first on the nose mainly citrus fruits and a little bit of floral. In the mouth this is refreshing with decent acidity with a slightly aggressive mousse. I left half my glass for around 30-45min and what a change. Now has opened up with beautiful notes of yeast and toasty notes with hints of citrus. Very good.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
2009 Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
86 points
Tasted blind – very like straw in colour. Mainly a floral nose with hints of soap and dried tropical fruits. In the mouth it’s bone dry with medium acidity and there is some austerity to this that I enjoy. Flavours of lime coming through on the finish. Good.
White
2003 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée Roussanne Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
Tasted blind – Medium yellow in colour. Beautiful nose of butter, butterscotch with hints of honey, toasty oak and some mature tropical fruits. In the mouth the wine coats the palate with a slightly oily mouth feel. Low to medium acidity, medium to full body and a lengthy finish. A ripe and complex wine that’s drinking well now and will go a long time further. Drink or hold. Outstanding.

Flight 3 (1 note)

Red
2001 Tardieu-Laurent Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vacqueyras
90 points
Tasted blind – medium red in colour. Nice nose of rubber, manure and black fruits. Flavours of soft black cherries and sweet cranberries. In the mouth it’s medium bodied with good acidity and some tannins still present. Overall a dark profile to this wine. After some time in the glass the funk/manure notes blew off and I felt the wine became slightly less interesting. Drinking well now with no worry of this declining anytime soon. Excellent.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2003 Domaine des Relagnes Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée Vigneronne France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
91 points
Tasted blind – Medium red colour. Lighter nose with notes of raspberries and cherries. Sweeter flavours with balanced acidity and softer tannins. Some tobacco coming through on the finish. Most people, including myself, were guessing everything but ’03 for this wine based on the profile. A very nice wine, especially beside the ‘03 Pegau. Drinking or hold. Excellent.
Red
2003 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
79 points
Decanted for 4 hours. Dark red in colour. A ripe and concentrated nose of roasted dark berries, stewed plums, black liquorice and herbs. Overall a sweet and roasted profile to this wine. Doesn’t taste or smell like Pegau I’ve ever had and comes across very modern, sweet and over extracted. At this stage this is an abomination of CdP and I’m saddened to see that I have many bottles left. It doesn’t surprise me that according to my previous TN on this wine, back in 2007, I really liked it—back then I was new to wine and was mainly drinking cheaper Auzzie reds…this would have fit right in. Maybe this will become something interesting in 10+ years but I’m not holding my breath. Very disappointing. Drinkable.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
1990 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
Tasted blind – medium red in colour showing some bricking near the rim. Beautiful nose of sweet red fruits, spice, rubber and tobacco. Opening up in the glass with some smoky notes too. In the mouth the wine is soft and perfectly mature. Ample fruit, well-balanced acidity and resolved tannins. Lengthy finish giving cassis and leather. Clearly a well-stored bottle as most were guessing this bottle to be a ’98 or ’95 vintage and didn’t come across that much older than the ’01 Donjon it was paired with. This bottle was popped and poured. Excellent.

Opened 4 hours before pouring. Medium red in colour. This wine was paired with the ’90 Donjon and they were very similar on the nose, albeit this showed only slightly more youthfully. Sweet red fruits with earthy notes and just a hint of funk. In the mouth is where this wine shows its youthfulness. Lots of acidity and mediums tannins. Smooth in the mouth with some spice coming through on the finish. A really nice bottle of CdP and great pairing with the ’90. Drinks well now but I will hold my remaining bottles for a few more years. Excellent. 92+

Flight 6 (1 note)

Red
1998 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Tasted blind – medium red in colour. Sweeter nose with cherry and raspberries flavours with a hint of earthiness and pepper. Sweet cranberries and raspberries on the palate with well-balanced acidity and tannins. Drinks well now but I think I’ll wait a few more years before getting into my small stash. Excellent. 90+

We had two people bring this wine so we got the pleasure of enjoying it twice. The first bottle had been bought and stored in ideal conditions since release; this bottle was a recent purchase off the shelf. Maybe it was just the fact that I knew this bottle had been sitting on the shelf for years, but to me it showed slightly less freshness and had a touch more oxidative notes. Still an excellent bottle and one I’d be happy to drink all day long, but just a notch behind the first bottle. Excellent.
