Flight 1 (8 notes)

Red
1995 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
93 points
Decanted for an hour which allowed it to soften beautifully, it continued to evolve in the glass further, lighter than other vintages I've had. The nose was aromatic and evocative, cinnamon, nutmeg, prune and fig along with some ethyl alcohol notes. Ripe dark cherry, more prune and fig with some leather and a little farmyard, finishes very long and super satisfying, excellent.
Red
1966 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
Decanted for about 45 mins. This bottle is far less evolved than the last, the colour has more vibrancy and less bricking, leather, some lead pencil and a little smoke, there's still some wafts of blackcurrent. The wine is wonderfully soft with plenty of sweet black current fruit between leather and meaty flavours. This still has some time to go on the strength of this bottle, completey different from the last.
White - Fortified
N.V. Sánchez Romate Hnos. Miguel Fontadez Single Butt Oloroso Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry
96 points
Very full nose, caramel, roasted nuts, a little salt and smoke, its very expressive. Waves of flavours move across your tongue as you drink it, salty, savoury, more caramel and nuts, in fact more of everything and, brandy snaps, the finish lasts for an eternity, I timed 2 mins plus and it's still kept coming back to me long after, wow, really wonderful, only 240 1/2 bottles drawn for this release, very special
Red
1988 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
92 points
Decanted for an hour or so, concentrated and still quite primary with a precise graphite aroma from excellent Cabernet fruit, really well made, great depth of flavours and a long finish, but it didn't have the wow that we expected and was behind the 1995 Musar and 1966 Lynch-Bages for pure pleasure
Red
1994 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Véroilles France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
86 points
Even with a couple of hours of decanting this was quite thin and never really got going, there was something there, but it was hard to pick it out
Red
1998 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
From memory. Decanted an hour, lovely rounded maturing burg, still plenty of time on this but good drinking now
Red
1993 Domaine Denis Mortet Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Aux Beaux Bruns France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
92 points
From memory. Quite dark, rich and soft, really lovely drinking now, great long finish
White
1976 Selected by Gough Brothers Bereich Bernkastel Riesling Kabinett Germany, Rheinhessen
87 points
Golden and honeyed but lacking lift and life, good to drink and a thinking wine, but has seen much better days
