Introduction

A very special selection of wines from some of the Northern Rhône's greatest producers - a rare Saint-Péray Mousseux, white and red Crozes-Hermitage from Graillot, Condrieu from Vernay, Saint-Joseph from Chave, Cornas from Clape, Côte Rôtie from Jasmin and Hermitage from Pascal Frères.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Jean Louís Thíers St. Péray Mousseux Brut France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Péray
85 points
Clear and Bright. Touch of yeast bread, citrus, cream and peaches. Small mousse, sharp, crisp, bright, lemon zest, peaches. Good aperitif.
White
2009 Cave de Saint-Désirat St. Joseph Cuvée Amendine France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
82 points
Clear and bright. Pale straw colour. Bit flat on the nose (perhaps a little cold). Wet stone, white flowers, peaches eventually came through. Dry, a little oily in the mouth. Peaches but not very expressive. Minerality came through on the palate.
White
2009 Domaine Georges Vernay Condrieu Les Terrasses de l'Empire France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
90 points
Clear and bright. Pale straw. Expressive nose. Minerality, pepper, apricots, white flowers. Dy, oily in the mouth, rich, smooth, more apricots, less spice than on the nose. Long and round.
Red
2008 Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
91 points
Deep, dark, intense. Slightly blue. Cherry lips on the nose, violets, perfumed, perhaps some TCP. Dry, good acidity, ripe tannins. Sweet brambles and pepper.
Red
2007 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave St. Joseph France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
92 points
Very intense. Opaque. Very peppery nose with brambles and some vegetal and roasted meat notes. Bold. Firm tannins, rich, concentrated, long and balanced.
Red
2006 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas Renaissance France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
92 points
Very intense. Inky nose with sweet bramble fruits and perfume. Firm, young, concentrated, brambles, mocha - drinking well now but will be spectacular in a few more years.
Red
2005 Patrick Jasmin Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
93 points
Intense but starting to thin. Perfumed and sweet fruit on the nose. Roasted meat. Lighter and more subtle than expected. Silky and elegant.
Red
2004 Vignobles Yves Cheron Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
93 points
Medium intense. Very developed mature nose. Dates sweet pan juices, mushrooms. Really well balanced. Complex, warm, thinking wine. "Beguiling"
