Introduction

a TOTAL accident as far as the coming of the WA report... but i am glad it happened and i am glad for Charles and all the NY winemakers that the report does them honor.

I firstly must say a HUGE thanks to CHarles Massoud - my wife and I and my friends were really in for a treat! a private tasting and a trully wonderfull walk through the vineyards with a TON of info... my parents and friends kept saying how this was the highlight of their weekend (we were camping in LI Wildwood Park for 4 days)

secondly - i was FLOORED by the quality of these wines. i have tried them before - but i must say that the couple of times i had them at the Vintage NY store i didnt not like them at all...and i think it is because their storage needs to be questioned. in any case - i had to buy some even though we were still camping. i dedicated a cooler filled with ice and sent them home that eve since a friend was going to work on monday and had to be in NY... will post notes when i open them!

Flight 1 - Whites (7 notes)

I was VERY impressed with thse...whites are more of my comfort field and were my biggest surprze. very very good stuff here
2005 is a great year!

White
2005 Paumanok Chardonnay Festival USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
87 points
fresh, green and light, long middle, touch of tropical fruit on finish, nice tartnss on the finish as well. reminds a bit of verdeho
White
2003 Paumanok Chardonnay Barrel Fermented USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
89 points
one of my fav and to me - a great qpr.
real white burg nose, long but a bit fatter middle, buttery finish, starts out Burg and end in Cali... again - a great qpr (and i happily bought some)
White
2004 Paumanok Chardonnay Grand Vintage USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
90 points
serious wine that needs a few years...powerfull and more complex, has good minerality as well as fruit. with time should be well integrated and then trully show.
White
2005 Paumanok Chenin Blanc USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
89 points
apples, pineapple, red berry on the finish, a bright little wine with a long clean finish.. great stuff
White
2005 Paumanok Sauvignon Blanc USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
87 points
grass, fresh notes on the nose, touch of tropical fruit, but a hint of bitterness on the finish
White
2005 Paumanok Riesling USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
88 points
nice riesling nose, apple in the middle, good finish but just a touch of heat (reminds me a lot of the german trockens and not at all of the cali/australlian)
White - Off-dry
2005 Paumanok Semi-Dry Riesling USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
87 points
pfalz nose, but rather heavily tropical. maybe the year that this wine did not benefit from - while others obviously did. apricot and peach come through as well, bit fat and finish is short. still - a nice wine for mixed company although a couple of bucks more than the germans of that level. the potential is there though - maybe in a cooler year? :)

Flight 2 - Reds (7 notes)

Merlot is the obvious choice BUT the Cabernet Franc was trully excellent, the colour and power of Cab Sav was well... i coulnt belive that this grape can get so ripe in LI

Red
2003 Paumanok Festival Red USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
86 points
oak sticks out a little, drying tannins, touch of bell pepper, nice middle but a bit unbalanced.
Red
2003 Paumanok Cabernet Franc USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
88 points
much better oak balance, nice light wine, good tannins, bell pepper present (as it should be) but in a good way, delicious wine that i would take over most simmilarly priced Loir reds
Red
2002 Paumanok Merlot USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
90 points
although my score is a bit higher i totally agree with David on this one - its an excellent value. i wish i was in position to buy a few more of these.

bright merlot nose - plums, but at the same time mineral comes out as well, soft velevely wine, plush tannins,...just YUM... trully a must try at this price! ($18!)
Red
2003 Paumanok Cabernet Sauvignon USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
88 points
Rich but too strong on the oak for me, tannic and powerfull wine. good finish
Red
2001 Paumanok Merlot Grand Vintage USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
89 points
Very rich nose, with fruit (plums/red berries), long wine with good tannins supporting it, more time perhaps? med finish. has great potential
Red
2002 Paumanok Assemblage USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
91 points
my favorite wine and trully a world class wine. this is a must try!!
plush, rich, great balance on the oak, long sweet finish. will benefit from decanting/age a hit!
Red
2002 Paumanok Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vintage USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
89 points
sangiovese colour, rich and ripe but not heavy at all, plumm/cassis notes, long finish. serious wine

Flight 3 - Barrel Samples (2 notes)

2005 is obviously a homerun... i cant wait to taste these out of bottle

Red
2005 Paumanok Cabernet Sauvignon USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
Barrel Sample - OH MY, beautifull garnet color, rich cali cab nose, long legs, powerfull rich wine.... YUMMY!!!!
Red
2005 Paumanok Petit Verdot USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
OMG!
if this does indeed get bottles as a varietal i will HAVE TO get some...
first notes - BDX - most closely reminded me of a bottle of Lynch Bages 2000... amazing wine-to-be...

Flight 4 - Sweet Wine (1 note)

i am too hard on the sweet wines... maybe because i have so many of them and drink quite a few :)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Paumanok Sauvignon Blanc Late Harvest USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
89 points
sauternes nose, long medium sweet finish. excellent balance, light and delicious wine.
