Introduction

After taking the summer off, I decided to fet the band back together with simple theme of bring a greT white. All wines were served blind and were chilled, vut waemed up in time. Group score generally followed my own scores. We started with a Krug NV, which as almost always was drinking great. In attendance was Bob M, Jim J, Anthony R, Mark F, Jeff R, and me.

Flight 1 (9 notes)

White
2000 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
91 points
Fresh, clean, ripe fruit aromas, showing honeydew, orchids, and touch of honey. Very Chablis-like aromas. Clean and dry in the mouth, nice crisp flavors, mineral driven My guess was Chablis Le Clos. 91
White
1998 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune France, Alsace
92 points
Sassafras root, woodsy quality, with earthy, petrol scent.
Dry flavors with big spice shows some age, leaner quality, with little upfront fruit, a food wine. Petrol quality stands out as does breed. Riesling?. Big wine lots going on, but not for everyone. Spice, length and petrol dominate any fruit. Not a shy wine and very distinctive. 92
White
2000 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Blanc De L'Orée France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
89 points
Dark aromas of coffee bean, vanilla, and forest floor, ripe fruit scent. Carmel. Very dry on palate, quite different on palate vs nose. A touch bitter on finish and fruit is in background. Somewhat high pitched on palate. Rich mouthfeel with an oily viscous feel. Good acidity lends backbone. Seems old world, but from where? What varietal? Long on finish, more of a food wine. 89 Complex and long, yet Not a lot of fruit showing today.
Orange
2008 Paolo Bea Santa Chiara Italy, Umbria
87 points
Weird appearance with light tea coloring. Aromas of tea, lemon, sweet fruit, and stones. Dry, yet nice ripe fruits are present, shows some age, zip, and power, most dominating character is dry grape skins, although some fruit qualities show through. Nice palate feel. 87 Jeff felt the strange color meant is was likely atypical.
White
1999 Domaine Thenard Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
94 points
Very ripe fruits show through on nose with rich buttery fragrance that nearly shouts a lush new world Chard. Sweet, dense, long, ripe, and totally impressive. Oily texture with lots of vanilla, and seemingly big oak. Very very nice, but perhaps a bit too oaky. 94 Crowd pleaser kind of wine Blind I guessed a high end Kistler along with JJ. Oops.
White
2004 Aubert Chardonnay Lauren Estate Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
96 points
Ripe sweet, concentrated aromas reminiscent of freshly made apple pie, impressive stoney adds to quality. Screams Aubert even blind and with some age. Sweet dense toasty big wine that maybe at its pinnacle, but who knows? impressive flavors and good length. This thing is Packed and would win over new and old world palates. 96
White
2006 Newton Chardonnay Unfiltered USA, California, North Coast, Napa County
90 points
Bright clean floral, pristine kind of nose.
Sweet lush, nearly warm, long dense ripe apples and peach, good hedonistic flavors, showing white fruits interlaced with vanilla, Clearly a New world chard, that is big big big. Buttery, rich, and fat. No nuance or complexity, but great primary flavors. 90
White
2005 Sine Qua Non The Petition USA, California
95 points
Hazelnut, dark edgy yellow fruits, a lush quality to the concentrated aromas, simply packed with a touch of buttered nuts. Lush, sweet, silky creamy texture. Pure pleasure. Long, lush, dense fruit dominated with creamy texture. Big yummy quality. Nice nuances, but a slightly warm long finish is only issue here 95
White
2001 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
91 points
Sweet rich ripe, nose, nice floral and hint of vanilla bean.
Clean fresh zippy on entry with nice density, spice, and persistent finish. A fleshy wine with an almost butter delicate quality, Impressive. 93 Got lost by group due to subtle elements.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1989 Chateau St. Jean Johannisberg Riesling Special Select Late Harvest USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
86 points
Molasses loke color with high toned pitchy nose showing old reiseling charactrr. Fat dense sweet with line of bright acid, but quite disjointed and likely saw better days. Still interesting. 86
White - Sweet/Dessert
1995 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
94 points
Golden yellow in color and showing sweet floral creme brûléed apples. Flavors follow from aromas, a medium weight version of this epic wine does not disappoint, but does knock one over either. Very good and shows breed and balance. Just a touch light. 94

Closing

All the wines showwd quite well and as typically occurs more subtle wines were scored lower by the group as they either needed food to bring out the true profile or simply were stunted next to bigger brothers. Great was to kick off the post-summer wine season.
