Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL

Introduction

I only have notes on a handful of the 40-50 wines from the tasting and dinner.

Flight 1 (13 notes)

Red
2006 Pierre Damoy Chapelle-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
92 points
Lots of spice on nose with black fruit. Palate shows very accessible fruit for such a young Grand Cru. Not lots of concentration or nuance, but very balanced and expressive of Gevrey-Chambertin.
Red
2005 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
90 points
Impressive Villages wine. Nose is mostly black fruit with meaty spice. Palate shows balance of red and black cherry flavors with good spice as well. New oak is clearly present and could use a couple of years to integrate better, but the tannins and acidity will help support this wine for a very long time for its level.
Red
2004 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
87 points
Mostly red fruit on nose and palate, with fairly good spice in background. Accessible already with just a bit of oak sticking out. A little bit of the 2004 "green" notes, but not overwhelming. Not very "Gevrey" in character for me.
Red
2005 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
96 points
Massive spice on nose with fresh herbs and concentrated black cherry. Same fruit comes through on palate with flavors of thyme and rosemary. Already showing incredible grace and balance, but there is so much dry extract, tannic structure and acidity that this will will outlast us all and keep getting better for decades to come.
Red
2006 Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
91 points
Lots of black fruit aromas, modest spice, then more backward and dense on palate. Needs plenty of time.
Red
1998 Domaine Jacques Prieur Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
93 points
Great floral nose with good balance of red and black fruit from beginning to end. Very harmonious in every way. Long, sensational finish really showcases spice, with some power emerging as well. Nadine says this wine has continued to improve steadily since release and is probably approaching its peak.
Red
2001 Nicolas Potel Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
89 points
Violet and rose aromas in front of black fruit. Palate doesn't quite live up to the aromas, showing lean black fruit with reasonable spice. Moderate length, not quite living up to Malconsorts standards for me, or even the Potel 2002 also being tasted.
Red
2002 Nicolas Potel Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
92 points
Nose shows black cherry, spring flowers, fresh herbs and hints of oak. Good fruit on palate, albeit a bit reserved and hidden behind the wine's silky tannins. Great stuff here, just 5 years away.

Red
2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
Red cherry and cherry liqueur on nose with great spice and floral elements. Black and red cherry on palate along with roasted meat flavors and great spice, then lots of oak. Lots of structure provide power and energy on a very long finish, which emphasizes the concentrated fruits today.
Red
2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
94 points
Red fruit and great spice on the nose with interesting espresso and vanilla contributions. Charming red and black fruit on palate also with great fresh herbs and spice. Long, alluring finish. This is showing better than the Chambertin tonight, certainly for now, unclear for longer-term.

1998 Domaine Jacques Prieur Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Combination of red and black fruit, forest floor aromas and subtle spice. At its peak now, with flavors nicely balancing fruit and earthy elements. Moderate finish.

1997 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
90 points
Lots of ripe black fruit on the nose with spice from fruit and oak. Plenty of tannins and ripe black fruit on palate. Not great acidity, so didn't seem very harmonious today. While I'd like to give more time for the tannins and oak to integrate better, I am also concerned with the direction the ripe fruit might soon take. Drink up? Not nearly as good as the Rousseau 1997 Beze also tasted alongside.

Ripe black fruit on nose, just not seeming as ripe as the Chambertin also tasted tonight. Also great spice, with structure that seems nicely integrated and balanced today. Black fruit and good spice from beginning to end. At a very good place now, but this should hold nicely for a decade, with perhaps some upside.
