Flight 1 (9 notes)
White
2009 Domaine Alary Cairanne Blanc La Font d'Estevenas
Deep yellow. Honey and nuts. Medium to full bodied, pungent citrus, slight residual sugar. Surprisingly bright with nice mineral finish. Overall, good and above its class.
Rosé
2010 Domaine de la Mordorée Tavel La Dame Rousse
Bright pink. Zesty watermelon. Round and moutcoating with terrific soil finish. Powerful, expansive, strong dry finish. Impressive rose.
Red
2009 Domaine des Coteaux des Travers Rasteau Reserve
Medium ruby. Fraises des bois and alcohol initially, then some thyme. Light to medium weight. Nice fruit, good acidity, persistent tobacco finish. Very good at this level.
Red
2009 Domaine Monpertuis (Paul Jeune) Gard Cuvée Counoise
Medium color. Bark, brown spice and some late raspberry. Sappy and brooding. Structured like Mourvedre with tannic finish. Redder fruit emerges. Shorter than others in the series.
Red
2009 Alain Jaume Lirac Clos de Sixte
Saturated color. Full of garrigue. Modern, clean style with woody base. Lush and absolutely mouthcoating, full of licorice. Long, fairly intense but not as complex and interesting as some of the wines.
Red
2009 Domaine de la Mordorée Lirac Cuvée de la Reine des Bois
Also full colored, only slightly lighter than the Grand Veneur. Licorice, lavender aromatics. Dark fruit and tobacco. Smooth and harmonious but excellent balancing powerful acids. Tannic finish which falls off more quickly than the previous wine. Ultimately not worth the extraordinary price for a Lirac.
Red
2009 Domaine Albin Jacumin Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Begude Des Papes
Medium red. A bit of funk. Light to medium body-this is a reserved, more elegant style. Nice segue of red fruit to herbs, pretty classic in this respect. Not as impressive on the finish either in terms of length or harmony. New producer for me and I liked many aspects of the wine.
Red
2009 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Medium color, slightly brown edge and not crystal clear. High pitched, fragrant and definitely funky. However, clean in the mouth. Big, sappy wine with a hint of sweetness (really the only red today about which one could say this) but an excellent, savory finish. Seems to be showing a lot of Mourvedre character at present. Definitely a new wave Clos des Papes.
White - Fortified
2009 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise Le Chant des Griolles
Medium yellow. Almost sickening high toned florality. Syrupy, very sweet Muscat.
