Introduction

Good friends with great wines to celebrate life

Flight 1 (4 notes)

My oh my! Monumental. This wine was an unbelievable mix of earth, mushroom and vibrant roasted cherry. This fruit is so pure and alive. This is one of those wines where you remember where, when and with whom. This is my new WOTN and maybe the best wine in the last ten years. Interestingly, the ullage was low shoulder and we were concerned at first. The cork came out in one piece. We drank the wine over three hours and it developed a nuanced lead pencil finish throughout.

1982 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Lots of mocha on the nose and palate. Dark chocolate and mature cherry permeates the palate with round soft tannins. Tastes like a very ripe vintage. Ullage: high neck, cork was crumbly but the wine was in great shape. Softened up nicely over three hours. Very good with steak lunch. Needs food. This is an inviting wine and you want to hang out with this for a few hours. A pleasure.

This was just eked out for WOTY for me from the 1959 Lafite. I actually think they are both in the same unbelievable category but had to give the '59 extra props for bottle age. The first sip of this wine made me shrug my shoulders and lick my lips. Tasted much younger than the 82 Cos which we drank side by side. Note of interest was we had the 59 next to the 82 and the nose was so close that it would have been hard to distinguish. This wine is jumping with exotic red fruit and is great place. Finished with subtle lead pencil. Damn is this extraordinary.

1996 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

I may be too conservative with this score but we drank it with the 59 and 82 Lafite which were in another league. This wine is a winner, just young and muscular. Awesome backbone and mouthfeel. It is in the early miles of a marathon. In 20 years, it has the potential for greatness. After three hours, the wine softened and the tertiary flavors emerged. So, if you kill it young, decant for 4 hours beforehand.
