A bunch of Brunellos

Tasted December 28, 2011 by Loren Sonkin with 694 views

Introduction

Last night my tasting group met to drink some Brunellos. We settled on the 06 vintage. All wines were given some air, but not decanted prior to drinking. The wines were served blind and consumed over the course of 3.5 hours. Breads and cheese were served along side.

Flight 1 (1 note)

Yellow gold in color. The nose has some lemons and some buttered popcorn notes. Oily texture which I really liked. The palate had decent acidity. Citrusy, creamy, ripe fruit. Blind, I was stumped but thought perhaps Tocai Friulano. It turned out to be Tuscan; half Chard, half Pinot Blanc. Could have been anything from anywhere. Nothing offensive until I heard it cost $65. Never had this before so perhaps other vintages had more cut.

Flight 2 (9 notes)

2006 Tenuta Fanti Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Very nice from the start. It probably did not improve as much as others though. Ruby/purple, clear. The nose is sour cherries with a charcoal note. Nice texture. Cherry cola on the finish. Slight tannins. Slight earthiness to it.

Great showing for this bottle. Wine Library keeps blowing these out for $23. First time trying, I was surprised, but the group's #3. Purple/ruby in color. The nose is dusty with sour cherries. Lou said oak, and he was right, the only one to show more than a hint. Solid tannins. Cherries, lush texture. Slightly sour cherries and anise. What a few years ago would have been called a modern Brunello.
Red
2006 Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

The group's WOTN. Purple/ruby in color. Great nose for my tastes. Cherries, cherry powder, slight mint, earthy. Mild tannins. Sour cherries. Good acidity. Long finish. Opened up with cheese and air beautifully.
Red
2006 Tenuta Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Ruby, clear and bright. This was quite tight. Eventually the nose showed floral notes, cherries and leather. Nice texture. Firm tannins. Lurking just under the surface, this was the most backward of the night. With air, it showed some complexity though and then finally some sour cherries.

2006 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Very nice wine, but for me, the most disappointing showing. Ruby in color, slight purple hues. Its got a pretty, feminine nose with cherries, cherry blossoms and cherry powdered mix. Medium bodied, the thinnest wine on the table. Nice balance and it did add weight thru the evening. Firm tannins. Very good wine, but lagging and one of the priciest on the table.

2006 Villa Poggio Salvi Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Spectacular showing for this bottle. My WOTN and the groups #2. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose is tart with cherries, cherry drink mix and some tarragon. Delicious and complex on the palate. Cherries, and fennel with a tart acidity. Long finish. Kept improving all night. Just a lovely wine.

Purple/ruby in color. The nose is earthy with cherries and some dusty aspects. Delicious if not as complex. Lush texture. Firm tannins. Sour cherries. More up front than most of the wines.
Red

I threw this in as an unannounced ringer. I did mark down that it was an outlier, but I was not thinking Chianti. Inky purple in color. In retrospect, the darkest of all the wines. Very tight, but with air, cherries, leather and some earthiness. On the palate, this had black cherries (also, in retrospect, the only wine with this type of cherry nuance). Lots of tannins. I suppose, blind, I was more inclined to think this had some Cab or Syrah mixed in. Can Chianti have Cab now? I have lost track. In any event, great, young wine.

I liked this much more than the group. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose is very tight. Eventually it shows floral notes, cherries and anise. Lush texture. Cherries, with tannins turning to sour cherries on the finish. Very nice.

Just for fun:

Sill not fully mature. Ruby/purple in color. The nose is very nice with cherries, saddle leather and some tarragon. On the palate, this is soft and while the tannins have mostly resolved (not completely), there is plenty of fruit left. Complex. Easy to drink. It was nice to drink this after the flight of 06's. I wish I had not drunken most of mine when they were too young. I had my doubts if they would last, but, at least based on this bottle, they clearly have.
