Tasted February 21, 2012 - February 22, 2012 by markellen.foodies@gmail.com with 707 views

Introduction

Attendees: Geoff Coons; Alvaro Dangano; Barry Diamond; Mark Friedman(me); Luis Gutierrez; Al Heltman; Hue Harriman; Pablo Lancella; John Radencic; Bob Radziewicz

Flight 1 - WHITE WINES (3 notes)

Great job, Pablo, Bob, and Al.

White
1998 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage Blanc Chevalier de Sterimberg France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
93 points
- Yellow gold color with medium forming legs and aromas of melon and geranium. It's balanced and has flavours of melon and oak with a full body. Polished texture with a long finish - Pablo's wine. Had an odd sweetness that made me think of Huet(Loire)! The first of three excellent Whites.
White
2003 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
- Light gold color with medium forming legs and aromas of lemon and geranium. It's in total harmony and has flavours of lemon with a light/medium body. Polished texture with a medium finish - Bob's wine. 80% Sauvignon, 20% Semillon. Crisp, vibrant.
White
2000 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
92 points
- Yellow color with medium forming legs and aromas of lemon, apricot, geranium and hazelnut. It's balanced and has flavours of butterscotch, apricot, lemon and oak with a medium body. Polished texture with a medium finish - Al's wine. Initially withdrawn, but with a little air it revealed it's Montrachet personality. I IDed it as Puligny, close but no cigar.

Flight 2 - RED WINES (7 notes)

Again an EXCESS of full bodied wines. After I first attended the Dinners, I had decided to generally bring lighter styled Reds. I regret not adhering to that thought. I wanted the group to experience the heralded 03 Pegau., but it didn't shine in this format.

Red
2003 Ridge Petite Sirah Lytton Estate USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
90 points
- Violet color with fast forming legs. It's balanced and has flavours of chocolate with a full body. Smooth texture with a medium finish - John's wine.dark brooding black fruit flavors. Unfortunately the first poured Red wine, should have been last. WE NEED TO FIND A WAY TO IMPROVE THE PRIORITIZATION OF THE THE RED WINES TASTED!!!
Red
1978 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
91 points
- Purple color with fast forming legs and aromas of black currant and violet. It's balanced and has flavours of black currant and dusty with a medium/full body. Polished texture with a medium finish - Luis' wine, originally bought at ZACHYS(when and by whom??).extraordinarily youthful and fit.
Kudos to Luis for his pristine cellar conditions. A historic wine from the days when there were approximately 30 Napa Wineries, and this wine reflected the Quality Level which was globally recognized after The Judgement of Paris when STAGS LEAP and CHATEAU MONTELENA swept the TASTING, LEADING to the explosion of NAPA VALLEY Vineyards and Prices.
Red
2000 Bodega Numanthia Toro Termes Spain, Castilla y León, Toro
89 points
- Violet color with medium forming legs. It's somewhat balanced with a medium/full body. Linear texture with a medium finish - Alvaro's wine. Obviously Spanish, either Priorat or Toro. I mistakenly thought Grenache.
Red
1986 Château Rausan-Ségla France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
92 points
- Garnet color with medium forming legs and aromas of eucalyptus, black currant, violet and cedar. It's in total harmony and has flavours of black currant and licorice anise with a medium body. Polished texture with a medium finish - Barry's wine. I properly guessed Margaux!!! YEA! I thought comparable to the 78 Mondavi quality wise, but more nuanced characteristic soft Bordeaux profile.
Red
2003 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
- Violet color with fast forming legs and aromas of blackberry and violet. It's balanced and has flavours of black olive, blackberry and oak with a full body. Bright texture with a long finish - Mark's wine(me). I love this wine, however it was inappropriate for a double blind tasting. It and others seemed to heavy to be drunk in this context. When we visited Laurence(Feraud) in 2010, she agreed with me that the wine had shut down then. From the extreme 2003 Vintage, this has been one of the most heralded wines on CellarTracker(33 pages, 94- average). Have 2 bottles, from the original case I got from Brown Derby, of the 03 left. I will definitely WAIT 5 to 10 years on the final two.

Red
2004 Penner-Ash Pinot Noir Seven Springs Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
89 points
- Violet color. It's somewhat balanced with a full body. Linear texture with a medium finish - Hue's wine. I guess I just don't love the Seven Springgs Vineyard. (I had/have 9 bottles of the St Innocent Seven Springs which Pierre Rovani absurdly awarded 94 points to. Also Brown Derby shipped me 9, and only 3 of the MUCH BETTER 02 Freedom Hill, when I had ordered 6 of each!!!) This to me lacks any of the Burgundian finesse normally found in Oregon.
Red
2004 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva Grandi Annate Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
95 points
- Purple color with fast forming legs and aromas of bell pepper and blackberry. It's in total harmony and has flavours of licorice anise and dusty with a full body. Bright texture with a long finish - Geoff's wine. Wonderful, especially considering it was the last Red poured!!! Like a great Brunello. I've only had a few Montepulciano's,, but nothing this good. It was stellar!. My WOTN. Clearly Italian.
