Right-bank Bordeaux tasting

Introduction

Tasting of several low-powered right-bank wines from various vintages. I was looking forward to this but I was somewhat underwhelmed by the wines - most either a bit closed or just not very interesting. To be fair I was probably comparing them to the right-bank wines I had in Bordeaux a couple of weeks ago (Cheval Blanc, VCC, Trplong Mondot). There was no comparison - rather unfortunate as these are a lot cheaper.

Flight 1 (15 notes)

Red
2007 Château Clinet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
91 points
Ruby with pale rim. Big Merlot taste with blackberries and blueberries. Medium acidity but the tannins were a little forward still. Slight bitterness on a medium length.
Red
2006 Clos Fourtet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
91 points
Deep ruby with slight rim. Blue and red fruit, dark cherry. Fine tannins, nicely balanced. Medium+ length.
Red
2006 Château Rouget France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
90 points
Mid ruby. Spicy nose with slight herbaceous quality. Strong angular tannins. This needs some more time.
Red
2005 Château Rol Valentin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
92 points
Medium+ ruby. Round and fleshy with good body. Blackberries on nose and palate. Medium acidity and fine but dominant tannins. Good length. Another couple of years?
Red
2005 Château La Fleur de Boüard France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Lalande de Pomerol
90 points
Deep ruby. Open nose of blackberries and spice. This was very smooth, silky even with the tannins well integrated but strong. Medium length with some licorice emerging on the finish.
Red
2004 Château La Clémence France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
89 points
Pale rim. Dark cherry but not very intense. Balance on the palate with not much tannins. May open more but little further to develop.
Red
2004 Château Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
90 points
Mid Ruby. Mild nose of red fruits. Medium acidity and tannin. Could develop a little.
Red
2004 Château Barde-Haut France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
89 points
Ruby. Some licorice on nose. Round and fleshy but not much depth or length.
Red
2002 Château Pavie France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
Complex nose and palate of various fruits and a little oak. Good acidity on this. The tannins were very smooth. This seemed to be just moving into tertiary flavours. One to watch.
Red
2002 Château Pavie Macquin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
90 points
Smooth and fleshy. Seems balanced and well integrated. However, like many of the wines on this tasting, it seems a little closed. May be worth the wait.
Red
2001 Château Laforge France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
87 points
Light ruby. Opened in the glass with some licorice but not much of interest here.
Red
2001 Château Berliquet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
87 points
Some herb on nose but otherwise round, ripe fruit with little depth. Low acidity. Bit flabby for me.
Red
2000 Château Larcis Ducasse France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
89 points
Lots of fine sediment in the glass - they should have double decanted these properly.
Closed nose. Leather and tannins dominate the palate - not much fruit.
Red
1998 Château Le Dome France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
91 points
Delicate floral nose and herb. dark fruit. Nice balance in mouth but short. Still quite structured - could be a keeper.
Red
1996 Château Monbousquet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
91 points
Mid ruby. Open nose of sweet spice and cassis. Good finish.
