CT Texas IV - Saturday Afternoon Double Blind Tasting

Introduction

As has become one of our traditions during our CT Texas events we held a Saturday afternoon themed tasting during out gathering in Austin, TX. Instead of our typical vertical tastings we did a tasting of 1980s wine from anywhere in the world. Bordeaux and Napa dominated the tasting but one Barbaresco as well as a ringer were thrown in to liven things up a bit. Here are the results:

Garnet color in the glass, dusty looking throughout. Nose of Kirsch, white pepper, varnish and plum. Flavors of berries and raspberries. Tart acidity, medium tannins, full bodied. Drink now.

Garnet color in the glass, dusty looking. Nose of iodine, leather and black berries. Flavors of tart red berries and cherries. Tart acidity, integrated tannins, medium bodied. Drink now.

Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, fairly clear looking. Nose of barnyard, camphor, plums and some floral notes. Flavors of berries, raspberries and cherries. Hovering between bright and tart acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink or hold. I'd likely go ahead and drink.

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose smells corky to me but still showing some aromas of forest floor and spices. Muted flavors (yes, I went ahead and tasted) berries, cherries and maybe some plums. Medium acidity, medium tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink or hold? Hard to tell since this bottle was slightly off.

Garnet color in the glass, fairly clear looking. Nose of spice, dried herbs and berries. Not much on the palate. Medium acidity, medium tannins, medium body. Drink now. I got to this one really quick compared to others. Pretty much fell apart thereafter. No rating.
