1er Cru Puligny & Chassagne Montrachet 2004-1995, with Richard Brazier

Handford Wines, London

Introduction

An interesting tasting and very nicely to see a good variety of wines from the two villages across parcels and vintages.
Keeping dry whites in a good temperature in the (for a change) London heat was a challenge and it for sure excluded the concept of decanting these wines something that Richard might have wanted.

Again the issue with old (and new?) Whites Burgundies is one of bottle quality, provenance and we would urge caution. We had a fair share of maderised wines and although we didn't have any premox issues we bet that would be an issue too. Good luck cause the really good are amazing and of good value.

Flight 1 (10 notes)

White
2004 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
90 points
Fruity, minera, Exotic fruitsl on the nose. Some oak. Quite well defined, round on the palate. Mineral and Oaky on the palate too, maybe a hint of botrytis sweetness. Better on the nose than on the palate. 90-91 drink now but with a decent life ahead of it.
White
2001 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Rich, silky, long wine. A touch too oaky on the nose given the age. Well evolved much better on the palate than on the nose (exact opposite of 2004). A very good wine especially given how difficult 2001 was for whites. 92-93 drink now
White
2002 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées Clos de la Truffière France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
89 points
Expected more given how good 2002 was as a vintage and from these 75yr old vines. Light, very pleasant. Lacks a bit of definition and almost feels flabby. Maybe a better wine to drink young? Felt old anyway. 89

Fruit, light mineral, “fullish” nose. Light exotic notes. Good ripeness, well evolved, round wine. Med weight on mid palate , quite long and evolved. Very enjoyable. Fresh and young for a 1999. Good life ahead. 92-93
White
1997 Joseph Drouhin Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Mild on the nose. Quite healthy and alive . Good colour, shows some age. Fatty and long and really worth the £35 price tag. We will look to buy some. 91+ drink now but will last a few more years.
White
1998 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Darkish on the colour. Sweet on the nose , lightly maderised unfortunately.

Good weight on this wine, round, lush. Meursault in style ina way. Well round, good fruit. Very much alive. Medium weight and with a lovely long nose to go with it. We really enjoyed this wine. 93+

WOTN by a huge length for us and also the group. A Great surprise and one we bought straight after the tasting. Full on wine , lovely ripe fruit on the palate. Mild, balanced , elegant and stunning. has a few years ahead of it. If you can find it buy it (approx 50£). 95 from us
