Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Dinner with Jean-Luc Pepin

Les Nomades - Chicago IL

Tasted June 5, 2012 by Burgundy Al with 1,050 views

Introduction

Knightsbridge Wine Shop and H2Vino organized a sensational dinner with Jean-Luc Pepin, Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé's General Manager. The Domaine provided sensational library releases of some wines and several of us brought out some older juice from our respective cellars. I was simply thrilled with how well the Vogüé 1971 Musigny showed, and am also glad I have two more bottles from the same source for future special occasions.

Great job tonight by the team at Les Nomades. And kudos to Todd and Veronica Hess from H2Vino, as well as Kevin and Matt from Knightsbridge for organizing such a great, fun and educational evening.

Flight 1 (16 notes)

White
1999 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
89 points
Domaine Library Release. Open 2-3 hours before serving. Citrus and minty aromas to start. Bigger, fatter fruit on palate with good structure and acidity, but somewhat simple finish. Tonight I preferred the 2002 vintage that was also poured.
White
2002 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
90 points
Good aromatic beginning with lemon, lemon peel and ripe apple, also slightly floral. Bigger and riper on palate with good acidity and density. I preferred this to its 1999 counterpart also tasted tonight.
White
1992 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
91 points
I tasted this from two bottles tonight, both Domaine library release bottles. First was open 2-3 hours before serving. Second was open 8 hours and mostly consumed then, with perhaps 1/4 of the wine left. Wine from the first bottle was ripe and lush on the nose. Stone fruit flavors with a rich, unctuous mouth feel, just modest acidity, then a slightly sweet finish that had moderate length. Second bottle (open much longer) was quite similar but softer, shorter and less precise. Two of the people at our table had opened another bottle 3 days prior (from the same Vogüé library release case as tonight's two bottles) and thought it best after open one hour, then slowly became less interesting, which was directionally consistent with our two-bottle tasting experiment tonight.

1993 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
93 points
Aromas of mostly black, brooding fruit accompanied by a big meaty spice. Very firm, very sturdy black fruit also on the palate. There is no question about this wine's density and extract, but it wasn't particularly accessible yet tonight. I wouldn't be opening another bottle for probably another decade.
Red
1998 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
94 points
Open almost 3 hours before serving. Aromas of red fruit with great fresh Provencal herbs. Red cherry and strawberry flavors come across as big, dense and powerful, with great spice. Long, textured, well balanced. Probably just entering a long peak drinking window. Very impressive.

1997 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
93 points
Domaine library release. Also tasted from two bottles tonight, one open 3-4 hours before serving, the second open 8-9 hours and mostly consumed at that time, with perhaps 1/3 left in the bottle for tonight. The first bottle tasted much like another bottle from the case tasted a few weeks back. It showed lots of good ripe fruit, sweet spice and lots of fat, youthful character, with modest length and intensity. i thought this approximately a "90 point" wine. The second bottle was completely transformed. It still had big, ripe fruit but less fat, more texture, greater length and a lot more Chambolle-Musigny character to me and a lot more Amoureuses character. To me this had developed into a "93 point" wine. Others at the table (Ken) prefer fatter, more lush styled wines and preferred the first bottle, but I found the second bottle so much more exciting and energetic.

Domaine library release. Again i tasted from two bottles, one open 3+ hours before serving, the 2nd 9 hours earlier, then mostly consumed with 1/3 bottle remaining. Very similar fruit and spice profiles on both bottles. Boysenberry, black cherry aromas with fresh tarragon. Similar fruit on palate, but the first bottle had that fruit slightly hidden behind firm tannins today ("91 points"). Second bottle came across an longer, more integrated and even more concentrated ("93 points"). No surprise that this will take so long to emerge from it's shell given that it is baby Musigny.

1996 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
93 points
Impressive for how accessible and charming already, given both the vintage and vineyard. Black cherry, blackberry, with dense, meaty spice. Slightly backward, but the great density and concentration give this an alluring character already at this early stage in its development.

Domaine library release. Open 4+ hours before serving. Similar to another bottle tried a week ago, although that bottle was popped-and-poured. This bottle also showed mostly black fruit, good baking spice and hints of dark roasted coffee and dark chocolate. This was also more backward, perhaps also a little longer finish.

1997 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Brought by another dinner attendee, this is the best showing I can ever recall for this wine. Lots of lush, concentrated and ripe black fruit aromas and flavors, but the spice was charming aromatically, then sensational on the palate, most notably the long finish.

From magnum, recent Domaine library release. Open and decanted 4 hours before serving. Black fruit aromas with a meaty character that (to me) was more reminiscent of a great Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru, but the palate was more classically restrained, nuanced and mineral-driven. Still very firm tannins, this still requires lots of patience. A wine with lots of bottle variation. Interestingly, this is my second best experience ever with Vogüé 1991 Musigny...the other being also from magnum, with the bottle having moved but once in its existence - from Vogüé to Becky Wasserman's house, where we greatly enjoyed it two years ago!

Recent Domaine library release. Open several hours before tasting. Fresh, vibrant and concentrated black fruit. Similar fruit on palate, with modest spice hints. firm and highly structured. Much like another bottle from the same library release tried a few weeks back, I never would have imagined this as old as 1993. Somehow a 1/3 full bottle came home with me from the dinner, and was finished the following evening, where it came across as slightly less fresh, still very firm but longer and more elegant.

1988 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Tasted near the end of the evening, this came across as firm and well structured, much like its 1993 counterpart also tasted, but with less fruit or charm.

1978 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
flawed
In a flight with Vogüé Musigny 1971 and 1961, all from my cellar. Probably slightly corked, given its musty state vs. other bottles from this same case we have consumed over the past few years. Clearly good underlying fruit and spice. Sigh.

Great looking bottle with a fill level approximately 2 cm and great color. Served in a flight alongside Vogüé 1961 and 1978 Musigny, all from my cellar. Ripe black fruit nose with great spice and perfect earthy, mushroom aromas. Great fruit on palate with remarkable spice and many unfolding, developing, nuanced flavors. I think this was everybody's Wine of the Night, including Jean-Luc Pepin's, and as of June 5th, it is my Wine of the Year.

Bottle with great fill (approx 2.5 cm) and great color. Label certainly showed its age, slightly tattered, faded and mold stained. Wine also showed its age, but in the best way possible. Floral elements on nose nicely complemented intense earthy aromas. Palate showed a slightly sweet character, with ripe remaining fruit and a great sous bois evolution. Very good length and great finesse.
