Introduction

There were a couple of open seats so we had an opportunity to fill in and taste with the Friday brown bag group. Wines are tasted double blind in flights, randomly arranged, hopefully, from light to heavy.

Flight 1 - I. Warm ups (3 notes)

White
2010 Terredora di Paolo Falanghina Irpinia Italy, Campania, Irpinia
86 points
Pale color. Notes of green apple, mineral and florals. Decent acidity on the palate, featuring flavors of melon, cream and apple. Melon qualities became more pronounced.
White
2010 Sitios de Bodega Rueda Con Class Verdejo Spain, Castilla y León, Rueda
87 points
Pale color. Notes of mineral and green apple with a cottony floral note. The palate follows the bouquet; decent acidity and finish.
White
2005 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Pernand-Vergelesses Les Combottes Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses
89 points
Notes of waxy white fruit and lanolin- Rhonish. Has a bit of weight on the palate and tastes of mineral, stone and apple. Good underlying acidity with a nice finish.

Flight 2 - I. Reds (5 notes)

Red
1991 Forman Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Garnet color, showing a bit of age at the meniscus. Aromas of tobacco and iron, with a nice herbal streak and dark fruit, plum. Balanced, with red fruit and plum flavors, hint of roasted herbs. Still has some tannin to resolve; finishes very well. Guessed Bordeaux.
Red
2008 Robert Keenan Winery Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Inky crimson color. Aromas of vanilla and blue fruit turn to black fruit and violets. Firm tannins. Black currant, vanilla and chocolate flavors on the palate, turning slightly austere on the finish. Guessed young Napa Cab.
Red
1995 Robert Craig Affinity USA, California, Napa Valley
86 points
Garnet core. Opens with a saline quality, also beef bouillon and red fruits. Austere, with drying tannins and red fruit flavors on the palate. Most of us thought this was much, much older.
Red
2008 Ramey Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
86 points
Inky purple crimson color. Aromas of vanilla, red fruit, plum and new oak; has a candied quality too. Full-bodied with searing levels of tannin. Cassis and oak on the palate. Eventually displays chocolate, vanilla and black fruit qualities. Guessed young Napa Cab.

Was shocked to see this unveiled as the 2006 version was enjoyable early after release. Hopefully time will help, but it has an awful lot of oak and tannin to integrate before the fruit will be allowed to emerge. Try again in 2018 perhaps.
Red
2006 Musella Amarone della Valpolicella Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella
85 points
Garnet color. Aromas of pine resin, spice and red fruit. Medium-bodied, with flavors of red fruit and a weird, manipulated, oaky grapefruit quality. Austere, overly acidic through the midpalate and finish.

Flight 3 - II. Reds (4 notes)

Red
1989 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
91 points
Dusty crimson core, light bricking; quite a bit of fine sediment. Aromas of eathy red fruit- cranberry and cherry, with barnyard and herbal overtones. Balanced, with red fruit, roasted game and herb flavors and a long finish. Guessed Hermitage. Began to tire in the glass, developing a sour edge. Nowhere near as compelling as a bottle tasted a few years ago.
Red
2004 Michael-David Vineyards Petite Sirah Earthquake USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi
90 points
Inky purple color; opaque. Chocolate, vanilla, currants and blackberry aromas. Flavors of ripe black fruit; hint of prunes. Long, balanced finish.
Red
2008 Match Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Butterdragon Hill USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
93 points
Inky crimson color. Lovely red fruit and vanilla aromas to start, followed by dill, red fruit and florals. Very pretty; elegant. Balanced, with red and black fruit flavors, along with vanilla and chocolate. Long finish. 93+ pts.

This had been decanted briefly about three hours prior to showing up in this flight. Was told by our hosts that it was showing very well on day two.
Red
2009 Michael-David Vineyards Petite Petit USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi
90 points
Inky purple & opaque to the edge, this was initially quite reticent and thick. Full-bodied with firm tannins and flavors of brown sugar, blackberry and dark fruit. Developed a terrific smoky barbeque quality on the nose and palate. Guessed Petite Sirah.

Flight 4 - III. Reds (4 notes)

Red
2008 Match Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Baconbrook USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
91 points
Deep crimson color. Aromas of violets, black currants and black cherry with a subtle brown sugar note. Full-bodied with a nice mix of red and dark fruit on the palate. Long finish.

This had been briefly decanted & rebottled about 3.5 hours before it was tasted in this flight.
Red
2002 Turley Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
93 points
Inky crimson color. Notes of iron, tobacco and a nice bit of earthy funk mixed in with dark fruit and plum. Nice balance, featuring flavors of dark fruit, plum and iron. 93+ pts.
Red
2006 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
87 points
Deep garnet color. Dark fruit aromas with raisin overtones. Full-bodied with ripe dark fruit flavors. A bit austere and acidic.
Red
2002 Robert Biale Petite Sirah Thomann Station USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Deep crimson. Blackberry and roasted meat aromas. Flavors of blackberry, dark fruit and brown sugar.

Flight 5 - IV. Bonus reds (2 notes)

Red
2007 Pax Syrah Cuvée Christine USA, California, Sonoma County
92 points
Dark color. Grapey; a touch hot, but notes of black fruit and incense too. Full-bodied with medium tannins and flavors of dark black fruit and incense with a slightly sweet edge. Nice finish. Would love a ribeye with this. Guessed Syrah.
Red
2002 Connor Park Shiraz The Honour Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Bendigo
85 points
Dark color with a weird bouquet of perfumed dark fruit and brown sugar with an intense grapefruit note. Medium-bodied, with flavors that follow the nose- grapefruit and dark fruit. Air brings out some red fruit nuances on the palate, but the grapefruit quality doesn't go away entirely.
