Ravintola Viinille ja Ravintola Pohja

Introduction
The 45th anniversary of Chevaliers de Table Rouge, the oldest wine club in Finland.
Flight 1 - Ravintola Viinille (4 notes)
We started off in Ravintola Viinille with a nice champagne, after which we tasted a couple of reds double blind. I also had a glass of Barolo from the sampler.

2002 Isole e Olena Cepparello Toscana IGT
Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Tasted double blind, had been in the glass for some time. A garnet red with an aged look to it. The nose suggests that this wine is ready now and at its peak, very nice smells of violets and cherries. The palate is quite acidic with cranberry/lingonberry, good tannins, very tasty. I was pleased that I narrowed this down to Tuscany and Sangiovese!

2002 Marqués de Griñón Dominio de Valdepusa Eméritus
Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Dominio de Valdepusa
Tasted double blind, had been in the glass for some time. This was a very strong wine, dark and young looking, strong fruit on nose, licorice, lots of tannins, inky cassis on palate, vanillary oak, appears to have good potential down the road. Give it another 5 years in the cellar!

2001 Gigi Rosso Barolo Riserva Arione Sôrì Dell'Ulivo
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Tasted from a sampler at Ravintola Viinille, Turku. This must be a modern style Barolo, very open and very expressive on the nose, blood, rust, violets, licorice and lots of dark fruit. The palate had tons of tannins, a slight sweetness to it, and excellent fruit. This needs more time in the cellar, but I liked it a lot right now.
Flight 2 - Ravintola Pohja, the appetizers (2 notes)
We then moved to the restaurant Pohja where we were seated in the Aleksis Kivi salon. The appetizers were very tasty, smoked salmon, shrimp cocktail and a fish mousse.

2010 Sartori di Verona Marani
Italy, Veneto, Veronese IGT
Had with the entrée of smoked salmon, shrimp cocktail and fish mousse. Nice enough wine, with apricotty smells and tastes, very fruity but lacking in acidity. Went well with the food though.

2007 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis 1er Cru Vau de Vey
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Had with the entrée of smoked salmon, shrimp cocktail and fish mousse. Quite astringent at first, with some airtime opened up with toast, minerals, quite acidic. I was not so impressed with this, perhaps it needs some more age?
Flight 3 - Ravintola Pohja, the main meal (2 notes)
Duck breast with assorted root vegetables and potatoes. Excellent food!

2009 Gabriel Meffre Cairanne Laurus
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Cairanne
A nice CdR, with blackberries, some white pepper and spices, good fruit on the palate. Was a good match for duck breast.

2003 Bodegas Fuentespina Ribera del Duero Crianza
Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
A crianza with some age on it, quite nice at this stage, oaky, red berries, some bacon on the nose, quite acidic on the palate with cranberry. Enjoyable, but didn't quite make it with the duck, perhaps better with hard cheeses.
Flight 4 - Ravintola Pohja, dessert (1 note)
Dessert was home made ice cream on a bed of fresh fruits, also very good!
Closing
We had a very enjoyable evening with 15 of us making it this time. The wines at Ravintola Viinille were great, the food in Pohja also very enjoyable.
