Flight 1 - Duck and black truffle paté, homous on cucumber rounds, Manchego cheese (1 note)

White
2006 M. Chapoutier Hermitage Blanc Chante-Alouette France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Very rich on the nose displaying aromas of lemon oil, some oxidation/nail polish, candied ginger and ground nuts. That oily texture follows through to the palate showing a fair bit of gingerbread spice, baked almonds, oxidized green apples, red apple skins and some orange peel. Plenty of tart tongue numbing acidity and a long length finish ending on notes of oxidized apples and ginger. Enjoyable viscous texture on this that just coats the tongue. Very good+

Flight 2 - Sea scallops with apple and endive, Alsatian style (1 note)

White
2001 Albert Mann Gewurztraminer Furstentum Vieilles Vignes France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
very sweet upfront on the nose reminiscent of icing sugar, followed by aromas of ripe pineapple, rich pear, melon, and some spicy candied ginger. Tons more ripe pear and pineapple carry through to the palate, along with cantaloupe, ginger spice, and some floral notes. A nice zing of acidity is still present helping pull this back into balance. A long length finish ending on notes of ripe pineapple and red apples. Just a fabulous nose and a rich viscous texture that coats the tongue. This is drinking perfectly right now. Fantastic.

Flight 3 - Salad (1 note)

Red
1993 Remoissenet Père et Fils Volnay France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
Great nose kicking off a generous amount of red cherries and violet floral aromas, along with plenty of earth and moss, raspberries, and black currants. Tons of red cherry carries through to the palate, along with red plums, spicy black pepper, and some floral notes. Still plenty of crisp acidity complimented by some still evident sandy tannins. A medium- length finish ending on notes of violet, red cherry, and black pepper. This wasn't quite as good as my last bottle of this, the palate was a touch dilute and didn't carry the weight. That said, I'm nitpicking here as this was drinking beautifully. Very good.

Flight 4 - Roast duck and shitake mushroom risotto with tarragon (2 notes)

Red
1999 Delas Frères Côte-Rôtie Seigneur de Maugiron France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Huge expressive nose of spicy black pepper, bacon fat, beef blood, red cherry, black currants, a hint of herbs and a violet floral aroma. That meaty character follows through to the palate showing tons more black pepper, bacon, iron, black cherry, black plum, tart red currants and a touch of saline. Lots of acidity is present coupled with plenty of dry gritty tannin. A medium+ length finish ending on notes of iron and black cherry. This is just a baby that's starting to emerge from its shell. Tightly wound with plenty of structure, and while enjoyable now with some air this will be even better in a couple years at least. Very good+
Red
2006 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Decanted for 3 hours prior to tasting. Still tightly wound on the nose, but displaying tons of spicy black pepper up front, followed by bacon fat, smokey camp fire, black cherries, iron, and some floral violet aromas. Quite tight on the palate as well but more generous than expected being this young. Tons more black pepper, black cherries, bacon, beef blood, asphalt, and tart black currants. Plenty of acidity coupled with a generous amount of sandy tannins. A long length finish ending on notes of black pepper, black cherries and asphalt. I expected this to be criminally young but with a couple hours in the decanter it actually showed better than expected. This is chalked full of acidity and stuffing, and shows a lot of promise. Give this 7-10 years and it will reward the patience. Very good+

Flight 5 - Apple pie with aged Cheddar cheese (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Alois Kracher Welschriesling TBA #8 Zwischen den Seen Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
What an incredible nose. Extremely rich aromas of apricot jam, fresh honey, baked red apples and pears, and burnt sugarcane. It would be almost too sweet without the crisp tart green apple aroma which helps keep everything in check. Tons more honey carries through to the palate, along with more rich apricot, ripe pears, caramel, icing sugar, and a hint of coffee bean. Great acidity helps bring a needed crisp bite to this and again shows some tart green apple on the back end. A very long length finish ending on motes of candied apricot and honey. A beautiful velvety texture that coats the mouth, what a great end to the evening. Rich and complex, but still plenty of stuffing to last. Drink or hold. Fantastic.
