Introduction

A big table with bottles on the outside and spittoons in the centre separated the men from the boys. After a couple of near misses (or should that be near to being a miss) I purloined a paper cup. Thus my notes reflect the following - paper cup and wine glass in one hand, pen in other, paper propped on anything I could find. Of course, the room was just big enough for about 15 people and there were about 30 there...

Flight 1 (16 notes)

White
2010 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Trocken Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
quite forward, tense, alert, elegant and dry. balanced though. Hmm. not sure I'm that enamored.
White
2010 Giuseppe Cortese Langhe Chardonnay Scapulin Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
bitter and unpleasant. Nah.
White
2010 Dombeya Chardonnay South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
herbs, slight apricot and peach notes...oak...a little out of whack...
White
2009 Domaine de la Tournelle Arbois Fleur de Savagnin France, Jura, Arbois
touches of flor and skin times...very nice - right up my street. But that's because I really like this kind of wine.
White
2010 The Story Wines Marsanne Roussanne Viognier Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Grampians
Bitter and astringent, lacks fruit. Not good.
White
2010 Domaine des Espiers Côtes du Rhône Diablotines France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Good. Mineral and perfumed notes. Bit simple perhaps. But jolly nice.
Red
2011 The Story Wines Pinot Noir Port Campbell Victoria Australia, Victoria
lightweight pinot, bit of fruit, bit meh. Not really my cup of tea.
Red
2010 Fattoria Mancini Pinot Noir Focara Italy, Marche, Colli Pesaresi
Dark fruit and dusty overtones. A little worked for me.
Red
2009 Dupont-Tisserandot Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Oof, plenty of farmyard funk and smoked bacon. Perhaps it needs some time. It's not in a happy place at the mo' though.
Red
2009 Dupont-Tisserandot Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tannic and punchy and a bit stalky. lacks fruit for me, especially from 09. I wonder if it is meant to be aged for a few more years? But it doesn't feel like it will ever come together.
Red
2010 Giuseppe Cortese Langhe Nebbiolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
More fruity than massive tannin, a pleasant, quaffing wine with a fair lick of acidity. Doesn't ask too much. Nice.
Red
2007 Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresco Rabajà Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Oh, this is rather nice. Plenty of fruit; berry and cherry and touches of plum. nice crunchy acid and gruff tannin. Yum.
Red
2008 Dombeya Cabernet Sauvignon South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
Jammy and jooby, massive structure...bit overdone.
Red
2008 Sequillo Cellars Sequillo Red South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland
Jammy red over black fruit...a bit anonymous...another long hang time wine.
Red
2009 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Côtes du Rhône Lieu-Dit Clavin France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
warm, wet and fine, red fruit and black pepper. rather pleasant.
Red
2009 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Chunky and robust, still very young, plenty of tannin and spice. needs time.

Closing

Bit of a mad rush made what should have been a casual and fantastic tasting an absolute bun fight. I missed stuff simply because I could not get to it.
