Flight 1 - White's (5 notes)

White
2008 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Great nose showing tons of flint and waxy soapy aromas, along with some oak spice, lemon rinds, white flowers, and ripe pear skins. This has a nice firm tart lemon cut on the palate, with some soapy wax, baking spice, white flowers, and sea spray with a hit of spicy oak and mocha. Great firm acid on the finish with a touch of sweetness. My only knock might be that the flavors were a touch dilute on the palate especially after the promise of the nose. That said I really enjoy this profile. Very good+
White
2009 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
This is showing the ripeness of the vintage, exhibiting tons of spicy oak, coffee beans, ripe lemon rind, and a touch of flint. The oak and ripeness is a bit overwhelming, especially being served along side the crisp 08 PYCM Charmes. The charred oak carries through to the palate along with a sharp lemon backbone, some white flowers and saline, finishing with coffee beans and more spicy oak. Blair said it well - ripe, soft, and a bit flat. Not bad, but I just don't seem to enjoy the profile of this vintage for the whites. Good+
White
2004 Domaine Amiot Guy et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
flawed
This was quite advanced. Salty butterscotch and oxidized red apples. The palate was a tad fresher than the nose kicking off some salty lemon juice, lime zest, and oak spice, but with underlying caramel beneath it all. Too bad. NR
White
2005 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
This was quite tight and clean on the nose at first showing plenty of white flowers, sea spray, stone fruits, crushed slate, tart crisp lemon, light caramel, and some soapy waxy notes. This has a firm fresh tart lemon core on the palate accented with minerals, crushed stones, plenty of saline, crisp oak spice, lime zest, and ripe green apples. Great acidity on the finish. This came together quite well with tons of citrus, saline, and minerals followed by some ripe tropical fruits hiding behind as this emerged from its shell. Based on this bottle this would benefit from a couple more years in the cellar. I wish it wasn't such a gamble with white Burgs. Very good+
White
2007 Domaine de la Vougeraie Côte de Beaune Les Pierres Blanches Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune
Tons of sea spray on the nose with soapy and waxy aromas, along with some oak spice, firm lemon citrus, and a hint of toffee. Lots of fresh lemon citrus on the palate, with tons of saline, green apple skins, cinnamon apples, and charred spicy oak. This always bats way above its price point and was a nice find. Crisp lemon citrus all the way through with great acidity backing it all up. Well balanced and delicious. Very good

Flight 2 - Red's (6 notes)

Red
1997 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
Pure damp moldy cellar on the nose combined with some bell pepper, bright blackberries, floral violet notes, and tons of gamey meat and spice. Rich dark blackberry and black currants come through strong on the palate, as well as plenty more meat and earth, along with some black licorice and salty black olives. This is drinking great right now with not a sharp edge in sight. Acid is a bit light but that doesn't detract as this shows great balance. Big fan of this producer. Very good+
Red
1997 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Santo Stefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
This opened with quite a bit of stinky sulfur on the nose that needed some time to blow off. Once it did generous aromas of rose petal come to the forefront, along with ripe red cherries, rich black currants, and more floral notes of blue flowers. More rose petal comes through on the palate, yet with more emphasis on the fruit this time, showcasing ripe black cherries, rich blackberries, leather, and a hint of sea salt. Still incredibly youthful, with generous acidity and firm fruit. Stay patient with these, while great already, this will just continue to get better. Fantastic
Red
2002 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Nice nose showing a burst of ripe raspberry aromas, along with black cherries, blueberries, spice, a hint of prunes and some leafy mint notes. There's tons of cooling menthol on the palate, as well as some rich ripe black cherries, black pepper spice, blueberries, and herbs. Plenty of firm drying acidity on the finish. While this is certainly a delicious and well made wine it was rather boring and lacked the excitement I was hoping for, especially at this level. Very good
Red
1999 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Decanted approximately 3 hours prior to serving. Fantastic nose that is just classic Pouillac. Shaved lead pencil, graphite, cigar, leather, black cherries, and some dark dried fruits aromas are all on display. Plenty more lead pencil on the palate, along with some dusty old leather, rich black cherries, graphite, dates, and a touch of fresh mint leaf. This delivers exactly what you would expect from this classically styled vintage. Drinking great already with a good decant, but will continue to improve with some time in the cellar. Fantastic

Red
2006 Domaine Rossignol Trapet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Super perfumed and floral on the nose with a dominating scent of Vitamin C vitamins along with bright red fruits and berries backed up with a firm hit of black pepper spice. Plenty of candied red cherries on the palate along with some leafy menthol, rosemary, rich red berries, and a touch of red licorice. Of course the palate was stamped with the typical Vitamin C as well which I always find in the RT Combottes. Delicious and drinking fairly well considering how young this is, with a nice core of red fruits and sharp acidity. Very good.
Red
1996 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Generous nose exhibiting a ton of rich dark fruits, black olives, meat, leather, spice, prunes, licorice, and a hint of cooling menthol. Great richness and depth on the palate with a bit more red fruits coming through, showing tons of spice, rich black cherries, smokey flint, bacon, fresh mint, and bright dried cranberries. This seems to be just coming into it's own right now but will surely reward more time in the cellar as there are still a few rough edges to smooth out. Crisp acidic backbone with plenty of depth and stuffing. Fantastic.
