A Few Meals in Burgundy

Tasted June 30, 2013 - July 5, 2013 by Burgundy Al with 638 views

Flight 1 - Light Sunday dinner at F&B (2 notes)

White
2010 Evening Land Vineyards Auxey-Duresses Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Auxey-Duresses
85 points
Simple but very good balance. apple and some subtle background spice. Moderate length with good energy. good for its price and level.
Red
2009 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Tasted blind, not a personal favorite for me. Slightly simple, sweet and jammy, I was not certain this was red Burgundy despite the fact that were sitting in Place Carnot in the heart of Beaune.

Flight 2 - Monday Dinner at Ma Cuisine (3 notes)

White
2004 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Meix Chavaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
92 points
Ripe apple, earth hints, touch of sweet spice. Lush and well rounded on palate, much better than I recall from when tasted shortly after release.
Red
2008 Coche-Dury Volnay 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
91 points
Red cherry aromas with subtle spice hints. Not very forthcoming today, this wine needed some thought and attention to enjoy. Firm grip with lots of structure front-and-center, much more than I'd expect from 2008 Volnay, even if only given 30 minutes in a decanter. Hold to 2020 or later, but clearly there is great raw material here.
Red
2008 Benjamin Leroux Mazoyères-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru
91 points
Forward and lush fruit with some oak spice and some earthy notes. Very forward and medium weight while also quite ripe, I never would have thought from 2008 if served blind.

Flight 3 - Tuesday dinner at Caveau des Arches (3 notes)

White
2008 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
94 points
Floral start with ripe apple and faint tropical hints. similar start on palate, picking up an edge and some energy from middle to long finish. I had wanted to order the 2007 instead, and just wish we had ordered the pair together, given how great this 2008 showed tonight.
White
2010 Domaine Ramonet Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Lush and almost sweet fruit start, showing apple and some peach, nicely supported by oak spice and wintergreen hints. Similar start on palate, getting slightly leaner towards finish.
Red
2007 Hubert Lignier Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
91 points
Red and black cherry aromatic start with a bit of earth and woodsy spice. Same fruit flavors, all nicely balanced and well textured. Moderate intensity and length, but good for the vintage. Better in a few years, perhaps 2017-2024.

Flight 4 - Wednesday dinner at Louis Jadot (4 notes)

White
1979 Louis Jadot Le Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Served blind at dinner. Honeyed character with ripe vintage elements. Clean, ripe stone fruit, clearly mature, but lots of power and spice throughout. What a great treat.
Red
1987 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Domaine Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Served blind with dinner. Clearly quite old from a mediocre vintage, I thought this was from the 70s, in fact thinking perhaps 1977. Lean style, seemingly underripe, slightly meaty. Better when first poured vs 30 minutes later. Faint fruit hints, lots of good earthy and mushroom elements.
Red
1967 Louis Jadot Corton-Pougets Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Served blind with dinner. Most earthy but seemed to be fairly ripe with a good deal of age, which made me think perhaps 1969. This plot has great exposure, which certainly helped in 1967, which I don't think was a particularly ripe vintage in general. I thought this was a top 1er, thinking perhaps Beaune Ursules, which led to the next wine....
Red
1967 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Ripe cherry aromas at least as prominent as earthy forest floor elements. Same wonderful combination of remaining fruit and mushroom on palate. Incredible balance and textures. Fresh fruit, great structure. Very enjoyable, far more than the charming Corton Pougets just tasted, also from 1967.

Flight 5 - Thursday lunch at Castel de Tres Girard (2 notes)

White
2010 Coche-Dury Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
86 points
Lemon and lemon peel aromas. Similar on palate with some energetic pop at the finish. Slightly simple but very good balance and overall performance for its level and price.
Red
2009 Domaine Dujac Clos St. Denis France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
94 points
Intense floral start with great cross-section of red fruit aromas and great spice. Strawberry and red cherry flavors, incredibly well textured and balanced. Very elegant. Approx 30 minutes in decanter before serving. No surprise, last taste was the best.

Flight 6 - Thursday dinner at Le Chassagne (under new management) (3 notes)

White
2006 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
90 points
Fat and lush peach, pear and apple with faint mint hints and some tropical elements, which stayed just on the right side of seeming over-ripe. Moderate weight and depth, this could have used a bit more energy. Best in the next few years.
White
2008 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
90 points
Lush stone fruit aromas with assertive, attractive spice. Good start with ripe peach flavors and some slightly more subtle spice, but this is somewhat short and simple, but I think that is mostly driven by this bottle being far more mature and advanced than we should expect from the vintage.
Red
2010 Coche-Dury Auxey-Duresses Rouge France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Auxey-Duresses
87 points
Ripe black fruit aromas with black pepper. Similar on palate, seemingly simple at first, but picking up some depth with more air. Kept changing with more time but it never really took on more complexity, which is perfectly fine for its level. Slightly sweet start-to-finish.

Flight 7 - Friday lunch at La Cabotte (2 notes)

White
2010 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
A bit of sulfur to start took some time to dissipate and made this slightly tough to assess. Obvious forward and powerful stone fruit with some nutty hints, but this is a wine built and meant to age, somewhat austere from middle to finish. 90-91 point potential for me.
Red
2006 Domaine Dujac Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
94 points
Bright red fruit aromas with intriguing baking spice, also slightly perfumed. Lots of both "Vosne" and "Dujac" character, with slightly more emphasis on Vosne. Ripe red fruit on palate as well with similar spice and brown sugar hints. Forward and accessible like many 2006s but with great balance and overall elegance. A sensational accomplishment for the first complete vintage producing this wine.

Flight 8 - ...and while sitting around the Chateau in Puligny-Montrachet or elsewhere (2 notes)

White
2011 Domaine & Selection Meursault Coche-Dury France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
91 points
Floral aromas, lush and ripe orchard fruit. Fat, unctuous mouth feel. Kept getting better and expanding over the course of an hour sitting outside Bistro de l'Hotel.
Red
2001 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
94 points
Popped and poured, this wine is at the start of a great drinking that should go to 2025+ easily with upside from here. One of the more lush and forward 2001s I can remember, if served completely blind I never would have thought this from the "Leaner" 2001 vintage. Lots of black fruit flavors and aromas, this barely hinted at earthy evolution. Good baking spice to start that took on more character and nuance once open an hour plus. We had two bottles of this wine over the week, from different sources, both with identical notes.
