Tasted July 26, 2013 - July 27, 2013 by Burgundy Al with 742 views

Introduction

My second time at IPNC. Here are the wines from the two days of lunch and dinner.

Flight 1 - Thursday Lunch (12 notes)

White
2007 Flowers Chardonnay Andreen-Gale Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Very lush and forward fruit with modest spice, low perceived acidity. Not my favorite style.
Rosé
2010 Maysara Winery Pinot Noir Roseena USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, McMinnville
Tasting. Strawberry and fresh. Simple but refreshing with good energy and zip throughout.
Red
2008 Acacia Pinot Noir Beckstoffer-Las Amigas Vineyard USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
Extremely fat and forward with a lush nose and palate that came across as slightly top-heavy to me today. Ultra New world in style.
Red
2009 Maison Champy Pommard France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard
All black fruit with very good spice. Slightly firm, but with 2009's fat fruit that comes across as charming. Slightly firm, almost rustic, but open and balanced. Moderate length and intensity, very impressive overall for its level.
Red
2010 Anam Cara Pinot Noir Heather's Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Chehalem Mountains
90 points
Very pure raspberry and strawberry. Young vines planted in 2001, this wine is well served by new new oak (all one year) with its delicacy and elegance. Floral start, lots of red fruit. Lean, lacy, elegant and well textured.
White
2011 De Ponte Cellars Melon de Bourgogne D.F.B. USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
Tasting. Apple and a bit of lemon with good energy. Simple but easy to enjoy.
Red
2009 Archery Summit Pinot Noir Premier Cuvée USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Ripe and rather fleshy. Very forward overall, giving it a simple and slightly off-center character.
Red
2009 Maison Champy Volnay France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
90 points
Spice driven start, slightly floral. Black and red fruit aromas, more black on palate. Very open and forward start, then firms up middle to finish.
Red
2010 Bethel Heights Pinot Noir Flat Block USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
91 points
Pure and elegant red fruit aromas and flavors. with a lacy, well textured character. Forward but also nicely balanced that makes it easy to enjoy but with the bones to age well for 5+ years.
Red
2009 Cooper Mountain Vineyards Pinot Noir Reserve USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Firm and somewhat backward black fruit with ok spice. A bit rigid throughout with lots of structure that is hard to assess how/ when this will harmonize.
Red
2007 Amity Vineyards Pinot Noir Crannell USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
An interesting spice driven start but not particularly pristine to me on palate.
Red
2009 Luminous Hills Pinot Noir Astra Estate Grown USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
92 points
A personal favorite at lunch today, first time ever having wine from this producer. Great Asian five spice start with lots of red fruit and floral hints. Young vineyards with accessible and forward character but also potential for upside with its fine tannins and elegant acidity.

Flight 2 - Thursday Dinner (21 notes)

White
2010 Antica Terra Chardonnay Aurata USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Tasting. Ripe apple aromas and flavors, some peach as well on nose with a bit of new oak spice. Good balance with ok textures, still showing a bit of baby fat, so probably better in another year. Very good.
White
2006 Philippe Pacalet Chablis 1er Cru Vauligneau France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Tasting. Not Chablis-like to me, more 2006 in character with plenty of ripe fruit and just faint mineral or acid elements. Interesting, but just ok.
White
2008 Maison Bertrand Ambroise Ladoix 1er Cru Les Gréchons Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Ladoix 1er Cru
Tasting. Rich start with ripe apple and pear, some tropical hints and a bit of new oak. Comes across as slightly fat but still maintaining finesse and energy. Good 1er.
White
2008 Camille Giroud Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting. Subdued start. Ripe apple and pear emerge with with time and air, as does some sweet spice. Forward and slightly lush, very engaging today.
Red
2005 Cristom Pinot Noir Eileen Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
93 points
Tasting. Spice driven start with ripe black fruit on nose and palate. Very good power and concentration from start-to-finish with impressive structural support from fine tannins and acidity. Very good potential, this is just starting to reach its peak drinking window.
Red
2010 Angela Pinot Noir Clawson Creek Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Tasting. Floral start. all red fruit, on the more subtle side with a slightly thin finish. Perhaps better in another year or two as it integrates better. The 2009 also tasted tonight was more interesting and centered.
Red
2009 Angela Pinot Noir Clawson Creek Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Tasting. Mostly red fruit with good spice and concentration. Overall good balance and character. Should drink well for the next few years, close to 90 point quality.
Red
2011 Sojourn Pinot Noir Silver Eagle Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Tasting. Fat mostly black fruit aromas with ok spice. I preferred Sojourn's Rodgers Creek also just tasted but would expect most people would prefer this more lush cuvee.
Red
2011 Sojourn Pinot Noir Rodgers Creek Vineyard Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Tasting. Red and black cherry start with some licorice and floral hints. Moderate concentration but very good energy provides support and length. I like this leaner style.
Red
2008 Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tasting. Mostly black fruit aromas and flavors, both meaty and dense with some sauvage hints, good concentration and firm tannic structure that will benefit from a few more years to soften.
White
2010 Maison Bertrand Ambroise Saint-Romain Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Romain
87 points
Tasting. Lean and angular with apple and lemon, modest spice hints. Good energy with good power on finish as well. Very good value wine.
Red
2005 Lemelson Vineyards Pinot Noir Stermer Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
flawed
Slightly corked.
Red
2007 Clotilde Davenne Irancy France, Burgundy, Côtes d'Auxerre, Irancy
Tasting. An unusual wine with lots of firm black fruit, some tannic, rustic character. Apparently this includes a small amount of Cesar in addition to Pinot Noir.
Red
2010 Domaine Cyrot Buthiau Pommard 1er Cru Les Arvelets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Tasting. Slightly subdued start with simple, fresh fruit and modest spice. Ripe fruit slightly hidden by the wine's very elegant structure. Good potential even if it comes across as slightly simple right now.
Red
2010 J. Scott Cellars Pinot Noir USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Tasting. Earthy aromas and flavors with red fruit, good textures. Seemed slightly older than a 2010, but overall good value at around $20.
Red
1999 Maison Champy Beaune 1er Cru Les Champs Pimont France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Tasting. Similar to a bottle tried last year in Beaune, this was also reasonably evolved with some moderately firm tannins. Best to drink up.
Red
2007 Benjamin Leroux Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting. Lean red fruit with firm structure and lots of mineral character. Good concentration, just a little harsh right now.
Red
2011 Kutch Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Tasting. Fresh red fruit with some earthy hints. Plenty of acidity and some fine tannins. Good spice, helped by (80%?) whole cluster. Lots of energy, also some sharp elbows right now, I think this will have increased harmony in another year or two.

Red
2006 Domaine Gille Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting. Good fruit, just a bit too much brett for my preference.
Red
2007 Hirsch Vineyards Pinot Noir San Andreas Fault USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Tasting. Lots of tart red cherry, strawberry, raspberry aromas and flavors along with some licorice and dried herbs. Slightly austere or brooding today on palate, giving a lean character, but with the energy and dry extract to evolve nicely. Very good potential.
Red
2005 Raptor Ridge Pinot Noir Reserve USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Tasting. Mature black fruit aromas and flavors with meaty spice. Best to drink up.

Flight 3 - Friday lunch at Chehalem (5 notes)

White
2012 Chehalem Grüner Veltliner Ridgecrest Vineyards Ribbon Ridge USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
Apple aromas, flavors with a rich, almost unctuous character. Easy to enjoy right now, quite refreshing.
White
2011 Chehalem Chardonnay INOX USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Slightly floral with some apple character, faint lemon hints. Good now, slightly simple.
Red
2010 Chehalem Pinot Noir Reserve Ridgecrest Vineyards USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
91 points
Nice spice start with exciting red fruit, some cocoa and good spice and floral hints. Fresh fruit flavors with good energy and persistence. Easy to enjoy, this should also age nicely.
Red
2005 Chehalem Pinot Noir Ridgecrest Vineyards USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
Mature black fruit with good Asian spice, mostly on nose. Good acid and energy have kept this bright. Good place now and for another couple of years.
Red
2008 Ayres Vineyard Pinot Noir Lewis Rogers Lane Ribbon Ridge USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
90 points
Red cherry and raspberry aromas and flavors, Asian five spice hints. nice floral hints. Very balanced and well textured help provide overall fine balance and persistence through good finish with medium depth and intensity consistent with good wine from young vines. At its peak now, certainly good for several more years.

Flight 4 - friday Night Salmon Bake (9 notes)

I didn't really take notes at dinner, so these were just some highlights written from memory later that night.

White
2010 Domaine de Montille Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Very lush and powerful with ripe apple, rounded character and some woodsy spice. Forward and very good now with sneaky structural support for the future.
White
2010 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
92 points
Tasting, brief note. Lots of ripe and forward orchard fruit aromas and flavors with background hints of lemon and roasted walnut. Good length, textures and after starting a bit fat and lush, ending with charming balance.
Red
2009 Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée 3.14 France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
Tasting, brief note. A rare/unusual wine but 2nd time i have had it in past year. Once again, it was easily mistakable as Pinot noir, very lush, forward and enjoyable with good depth and concentration for Morgon.

Red
2001 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
flawed
Quite muted vs prior bottles, probably slightly corked.
Red
2000 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
94 points
Tasting, brief note. Forward black fruit with espresso and cocoa hints with enticing spice. The forward and ripe fruit masks firm tannins and structure that are still taking their own time to soften. Very nice now, but this will still get better as the harmony increases.
Red
1996 Domaine Jacques Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Santenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
92 points
Tasting, brief note. Very forward and accessible for a 1996 with charming (mostly) black and blue fruit and classically Volnay spice and perfume. Moderate length and intensity but very good balance with sweet fruit and spice. At its peak now with good freshness, but I expect this will continue at this quality level for at least another decade while evolving.

Red
2008 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos de La Bussière France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
90 points
Earthy black and red fruit aromas with some black pepper and dried herb aromas. Starting to mature nicely on palate with a firm, ever-so-slightly rustic touch in the middle. Good length with some power.
Red
1988 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Tasting. Wow, this is black, meaty and dense with sensational concentration. Black cherry and plum with black pepper and spice. Power and incredibly fresh. Great balance and this has lots of upside going forward with decades of great wine experiences.
Red
1999 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
91 points
Tasting, from magnum. Lots of great red fruit just starting to show evolving, maturing character. Bit of oak spice, plenty of meaty spice and gamy character. Very good length and both power and finesse on finish.
