Saturday Afternoon at Weygandt
Washington, DC
Tasted October 5, 2013 by isaacjamesbaker with 320 views
Introduction
I got together with some friends at Weygandt Wines for a lazy Saturday tasting. Good wines, good times. It was an unnaturally hot day, so we stuck mostly with lighter wines. All France, but I snuck in a Matthiasson Chard for fun.
Flight 1 (10 notes)
White - Sparkling
N.V. Pierre-Marie Chermette Chardonnay Crémant de Bourgogne Blanc de Blancs Brut
86 points
A decent effort from Chermette. Sea shell, bruised apples on the nose. Apricot and yellow apple fruit lead the way, backed up by honey and some herbal and sage-like notes. Not very precise, but tasty.
White
2010 Gerard & Pierre Morin Sancerre Le Chêne Marchand

A year since I've tried this, and it's evolved quite a bit. Still some nice sea shell and green herb notes on the nose, but more melon and guava fruit showing. Tangy acid provides great support for the white peach and lemon curd. The creamy finish is matched with minerals.
White
2011 Albert Mann Riesling Cuvée Albert
87 points
Juicy, fresh, the apricot and white peach fruit mixes with sea shell notes and white flowers. A juicy, ripe Riesling, but showing some character and a food-friendly approach.
White
2010 Faiveley Mercurey Clos Rochette Blanc
87 points
Nose shows green apple, cinnamon and some honey. That fresh 2010 acid complements the richer guava fruit. Round, with some almond-toast notes, but tangy all the way through.
White
2012 Matthiasson Chardonnay Linda Vista Vineyard
91 points
A crisp, bright and clean Chardonnay with some serious depth and complexity. Honeysuckle, lime, green melon and a slight nutty note on the nose. So clean and fresh on the palate, the salted lime and green melon fruit plays with honey and floral tones. The minerality is really powerful, and makes me crave oysters. But the fruit is still bold enough to hold up to heavier chicken or pasta dishes. Beautiful stuff from Matthiasson, no surprise there.

Rosé
2012 La Bastide Blanche Bandol Rosé

Two days open, still showing very well. Love the crispness, the minerality, and the complex strawberry and herbal-saline aspects.

2012 Pierre-Marie Chermette Fleurie Poncié

My first taste from a proper bottle, I'm liking this wine, although its very light and fresh in its approach. A lot of wild strawberry and bright flowers on the nose. Lightweight on the palate, with fresh cherries and strawberries, mixed in with flavors of olive and soil. Soft acid and easy-drinking tannins, this seems like more of an early drinker. But let's be clear: it's bright and tasty and delicious.

2010 Château Grange Cochard Morgon Vieilles Vignes

Expressive nose of plums, violets, a bit of tar. Fresh cherry fruit, medium-grain tannins, solid acid. The fresh fruit is highlighted by notes of granite and tar, maybe a bit of black olive. Tasty stuff.

1988 Château Rausan-Ségla

The bottle and cork were in pristine condition, and I thought the wine showed very well. The nose is complex and shifting, showing dried berries, potpourri, soy and mushroom. The tannins are still holding the palate together, providing a foundation with the medium acid. The cranberry and cherry fruit is still holding up, but it's laced with all sorts of beef, soy, chewing tobacco and slim jim flavors. Overall, the wine is silky and balanced. Showing lots of nuance, this changed a lot as it got more air.

2009 Château de Fosse-Seche Eolithe

Damn, this wine is really perfumed and rich and full of spice notes. Elegant, but packed with dried flowers, spices and olives. Deserving of a nice, slow-cooked meat dish with lots of spices. Yum.
