Introduction

Overall terrific showing from all wines. not a single wine off, even though the two old whites had a very bad cork.
the 1987 Fieuzal white was a very nice surprise, amazingly young (and still going the day after). the 1989 Doisy Daene also an excellent wine.
in the red bordeaux, the 1995 leoville barton was still too young and closed. the 1996 classic and austere, the 2001 lagrange more modern and the san leonardo fitting in nicely, given away by the higher acidity and the balsamic note (one person recognised it blind!)

the menu was
canapes of dill salmon, anchovy butter, smoked roe with the fieuzal
pasta with ragout of duck with winter roots with the 2001s
beef rib roast, peperonata and garlic potatoes with the 1996s and 1995
rocquefort and marechal with the sauternes
special desser created fr the dinner by Nicolas Arnaud, a verrine with custard, pistachio bisquit, caramelised mango and pineapple, topped with chantilly and a pretty chocolate bow.

after dinner: Hibiki, Lagavullin DE, the Laddie 10

Flight 1 (8 notes)

White
1987 Château de Fieuzal Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
feared for the cork, dry and crumbly but it held the seal. very light colour (no premox here!), frst nose of the oak, then lanoline, clementines, cut grass., hazelnut. lovely wine!

Red
2001 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
cassis, mint, polished leather. round full mouth, not very much acidity, a tiny green note with fruit and tannic finish. wait a bit.
Red
2001 Tenuta San Leonardo San Leonardo Italy, Trentino Alto-Adige / Veneto, Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT
more brown than the lagrange. lactic, balsamic, tobacco and mint in the mouth, very balanced and long on acidity. less tannic.
Red
1996 Château Sociando-Mallet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
tobacco and muted fruit (spot on the last note!). underwood and a bit of pepper, light bodied. classic.
Red
1996 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
warmer nose than the sociando, more red fruit and lactic notes. mouth also classic, on tobacco and lead. tannins are finer.
Red
1995 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
very tightly wound, red fruit, mint, more polished and longer than the previous wines. wait.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1989 Château Doisy-Daëne France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
again a very dry cork, but the wine was undamaged. classic nose of beeswax, spices, pineapple, saffron, candied orange peel. delicious mouth with just a bit of spice but not too bitter. still refreshing and balanced, lovely dessert wine.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2007 Château Doisy-Daëne France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
much fresher than the 1989, nose on tropical fruit, passion fruit in particular. the mouth is denser but the acidity also more pronounced. will age well.
