Flight 1 (14 notes)

White
2004 Lake's Folly Chardonnay Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
89 points
Lemon, toast and popcorn. Mealy palate, a little sourness on the finish contrast with rich and developed fruit. I like it but probably not for long term keeping.
White
2005 Domaine Epis Chardonnay Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Macedon Ranges
88 points
Golden coloured. Nutty, pear and peach aromas. Palate is restrained, medium length and is a little bit bland for my taste. Drink now-ish.
Red - Sparkling
2004 Seppelt Shiraz Show Sparkling Great Western Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Great Western
91 points
Raspberry compote, cherry - quite bright red fruit here, it's very clean! Elegant and balanced palate, with good acidity and length. Finish does get stretched out by the bright fruit and it feels quite refreshing. Good flow to this wine and potential to improve.
Red
1975 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
85 points
Earthy with some mint and molasses. Palate is slightly thin, dropping away too early. Some sweet fruit remains at the periphery but there is no structure to it. Fading away.
Red
2006 By Farr Pinot Noir Sangreal Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Geelong
91 points
Dark florals, stem, spice and tar aromas. Medium bodied, with really good fruit depth - there is some richness but it is held back very nicely but classy acidity. Really likeable and has interest and character.
Red
2005 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
85 points
Served blind. Floral and medicinal nose with pencil shavings and earth. Light bodied, less expressive than the nose, there is some acid but the structure is poor. Not sure what was going on here and the identity was a surprise when revealed.
Red
2005 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
91 points
Beautifully perfumed - red cherry, roses with some ash and tar as well as earth. Superior structure, with superb texture and really fine detail. The only downside is that it finishes a touch hard, though I think so more time in bottle would assist there.
Red
2011 Wendouree Malbec Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
90 points
Floral lift with some stem influence and appealing cinnamon and spices. There is some good fruit on the palate, though it is quite held back and not overly deep. Enjoyable now and over the shorter term.
Red
2001 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) Brunello di Montalcino Rennina Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
93 points
Cherry, rhubarb, mixed spices, some sultana and dusty oak notes. Bold, intensely fruited palate - it's obviously still got plenty of youthful character but it is just starting to develop complexity and soften out. Tannins are still present but are fine and unobtrusive. Long and the well integrated acidity stretches the flavours out very well.
Red
2009 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Both pretty and complex on the nose - roses, camphor, tea leaves, five spice, some VA and some appealing herbal notes. Delicate with restrained fruit and a fine line of acidity that lifts and extends the wine. More savoury than fruit driven, it is showing well even this young.

2012 Ruggabellus Efferus Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
91 points
Spicy nose with black/red currant, some pepper and stalk, cinnamon and graphite. Rich and spice driven on the palate too, the balance is excellent and there is a mineral core that runs through the length of the wine and lifts over the top of the fruit richness. Give it 5-10 years to shine.
Red
2002 Henschke Shiraz Mount Edelstone Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
90 points
Served blind. Very floral nose with menthol, earth, spice and some leathery notes, there is also licorice and blackcurrant that veers dangerously close to DMS. The palate is appealing, with rich blackcurrant fruit and while it could probably do with some more structure, it is very nice to drink.
Red
2004 Glaetzer Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
90 points
Good perfume along with dusty earth and some blackberry fruit. Medium bodied, plays along with the dark fruited style without veering into overly rich territory. Good length and very pleasant thanks to the restraint.
Red
2010 Mollydooker Shiraz Carnival of Love Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
89 points
Served blind. On the nose there is ash, cherry, spirit and oak. Round, extracted and viscous palate, it has good length but the spirits keep rising up. More balanced than the last vintage I had of this wine (2005) but still not really my scene.
