Flight 1 (9 notes)

White
2005 Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
Did not taste. Smelled great and everyone enjoyed the age.
Red
2009 Maison Bleue Gravière Upland Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley Snipes Mountain
92 points
Real nice Washington Syrah styling. Not too savory or meat forward but still present. Moderate ripe blueberry compote, dark bacon meat, some purple flowers. Long finish but light on its feet for a Syrah blend. Limited notes but everyone really enjoyed the bottle. A rich wine that comes across as feminine and vibrant.
Red
2005 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
93 points
I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. For many it was their WOTN.
Quite understated but still a behemoth of a Shiraz. Dark blackberry jam, liqueured fig and plum.
Dark chocolate and vanilla. Definitely a fair amount of oak showing but the robust fruit holds up.
I don't see how this is a 95+, in some cases 98 point wine. It is nice and unlike other Barossa and even Glaetzer wines I have tasted. This was one of the first nicer bottles of wine I purchased and was somehow able to hold onto it for six years! I strongly believe that cellar time assisted much in the score and more restrained qualities.
Red
2010 Sojourn Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
92 points
Limited notes. Very in line with Sojourn Pinot bottlings. Plump, peppery pink fruit. Some nice smoke and meat elements.
Anyone would like this wine who enjoys Sonoma Coast Pinot. It is a fuller bodied style but it has light colored fruit elements as well as nice pink rose petal aromatics. A pretty wine that I feel is consistent year to year. The single vineyards are great but this is stellar for an AVA bottling.
White
2010 Franciscan Estate Chardonnay Cuvée Sauvage USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
88 points
Absolutely Napa Chardonnay. Sure, not quite as overdone as some in this price range. Certainly some excellent tropical and citrus fruit coupled with dark nutty elements. The malo is present and could be a little more restrained but I think that most of America would really enjoy this wine if looking for quality Chardonnay at this price point…at a grocery store.
Red
2010 Paloma Merlot USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
93 points
Paloma delivers every time. Classic ripe Napa fruit. Plummy, chocolatey, dark cherries, black and purple flowers and some really nice oak integration. This is so young. The palate is bursting with more cherry pie, vanilla and milk chocolate. Long finish. This could use a solid two hour decant if opening in the next few years. I say again that this is absolutely one of the finest Merlot coming out of Napa year to year. Thanks Johnny.

Red
2009 K Vintners The Creator USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
93 points
Popped and poured. Dark savory blue and black fruit, touches of black road tar and volcanic rock.
The palate isn't overdone. Really nice streamlined acidity. Complex finish. This needed a nice decant but it was gorgeous. Everyone loved this. How could you go wrong with fruit from these two top pedigree sites in Washington.

2009 Kesner Pinot Noir USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
90 points
A bit underwhelmed. Straight forward moderate high toned cherry and pomegranate. Text book quality Sonoma Pinot.
Got this for half price (30 from 60). Definitely not worth the later in my opinion. The finish fell off a bit short and there wasn't too much nuance. There was nice acidity but didn't do it for me.
Fairly one note. Still a nicely made wine but for the money you can get better for half the price - and without too much effort.

1980 ZD Wines Zinfandel USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
One of Bill Martin's bottles.
Wow. This shouldn't still be tasty. But honestly, it is really really still showing as well as it could.
Light pink color. Cloudy and opaque. Subdued aromas. Feminine pink grapefruit and blood orange. Marmalade. This low alcohol Zin was what it used to be like in California.
Understated, great acidity. Lower alcohol. It was really nice to sample this. The cork was in fine condition and again, due to its pristine storage, this showed as well as it could.
