Flight 1 (11 notes)

White
2010 Franz Hirtzberger Riesling Smaragd Hochrain Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

Fabulous wine, showing intensity, balance and focus. Lovely citrus and floral notes with a crisp, lip smacking, chalk-tinged finish.
White
2011 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Combes Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
88 points
Enjoyable wine, which I wouldn't guess as white Burg (I guessed white Rhone). A bit of a flinty, matchstick, sulfury note which eventually blew off for me, Floral, stoney and a hint of almond. Very pleasant.
Red
2010 Coudert Fleurie Clos de la Roilette France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie
87 points
Tart, lean and racy with a light herbal streak to accompany the high toned cherry fruit. Stoney and steely. I think I enjoyed this more than most, but it was a bit austere and needed food.
Red
2011 Evening Land Vineyards Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
This was a tough wine for me to really enjoy, as the smokey, charcoal notes were a bit too overwhelming for me. Just couldn't get past the fire-pit flavor. Not rated.
Red
2007 Château Rayas Côtes du Rhône Château de Fonsalette Reserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
87 points
The color suggests this has some age on it. Spicy and beefy, with an almost savory broth flavor. A nice licorice note lingers on the finish. I think I would have liked it more if I didn't keep focusing on the traces of VA I kept getting.
Red
2010 Edmunds St. John Rocks and Gravel USA, California
89 points
Very enjoyable, with plummy fruit, spice and warm stones. Bright and lively. A bit of a plastic note intruded, but this seemed to pass away with time. Interested to see how this will transform with age.
Red
1995 Château La Louvière France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
Excellent and pleasant surprise. This is the kind of wine I want to drink on an autumn night, as the nose is bursting with dried leaves, earth and dried pressed flowers. Lots of secondary notes here to enjoy, but the fruit (though mature) is still there. Seems to be at peak.
Red
2007 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Grézeaux France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
90 points
A wine with lovely tension and focus. This showed a nicely tart cranberry and herbal palate, with violets and stone flavors lingering in the background. I wish this was a bit more plush and generous, but the wine delivered nice layered, lean flavors.
Red
2007 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
91 points
Deep and bright, showing savory spice and shimmering cherry fruit. Dried flowers and a hint of minerals. The acids are grippy and could use a bit more time to round out. Seems to be just entering its window of enjoyability.

2000 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

This hits the pleasure zone for me. The mouth-feel, the texture, the pure drinkability of this wine provides so much joy. Velvety smooth cherry, spice and floral notes. this coats the palate and lingers nicely. Very plush and full of charm. Time to buy back-fill on 2000s for current enjoyment?

White - Off-dry
1997 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese #9 Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
94 points
Well, I'm certainly happy I stayed long enough to try this. Flamboyant, extroverted, tropical and lush, but not in any way flabby or honeyed. This had razor sharp "Saar-acidity". Loads of citrus to brighten up the tropical fruit: tangerine, lime and grapefruit. Very clean on the finish. Absolutely balanced and delicious.
