Flight 1 - Bubbles! (3 notes)

White - Sparkling
2000 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill France, Champagne

¤FW - Really good stuff! In many ways this is reminding me of a good white Burgundy. Nose is dominated by sulfuric minerals, gun powder, crushed stones, but there is also plenty of apples of all sorts, nougat, coffee, citrus and orange peel. There is a fantastic depth to the nose that really shows of the wines quality.
Broad, generous fruit on the palate with a high intensity that smoothens out the really high background acidity. Immaculate length!

Given a few hours in the glass it really shows it's quality, so I'm guessing it has a long and prosperous future ahead of it.
Rosé - Sparkling

¤FW - Scores a few point for the curiosity factor, but for me this is a wine past it's prime and even though it is a few years old it shouldn't have been this far gone. Nose is dominated by herbs and tomatoes, thyme, dill and oregano. There is hints of dried fruit, raisins and figs and some funky wool aromas.
Palate is dried out and slightly short and hollow leaving a dominating acidity. Still really fun to try and even though it might not sound like it, this is actually quite pleasant to drink.

¤FW - The surprise of the evening! Had this 100% pinned down as a Blanc des Blancs Champagne. Looking at the notes in hindsight there are some things insinuating its origins though. The fruit on the nose leans towards riper fruit and more tropical notes, honey melon, star fruit and some gooseberries. But there is also plenty of citrus, honey and nuts. A slight funky note shines through at times and there is a touch of bread.
On the palate there is nothing that couldn't have been from northern France. High, tart acidity, lean fruit, amazing length and intensity. Screams high quality! Only thing I'm missing is a bit of complexity and depth on the nose, but on the other hand It had tough competition!

Flight 2 - Whites! (2 notes)

White
2009 Domaine des Baumard Savennières Clos du Papillon France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières

¤FW - Second time around this year that this wine has fooled me to guess all but France. Really should try to learn from my mistakes!

Nose is funky and wierd but great! Wet, stony minerality, lots of animal fur, wool and bees wax. There is hints of oaky vanilla and some lemon zest. Big, full body with a fat oily mouthfeel. Good length and intensity. Finish is slightly warm and sticky. I'm guessing the acidity is quite high, but the actual perception of it is on the lower side.

Fun, nice wine. Second best in the flight! (of two wines)

2006 Domaine Frédéric Mochel Riesling Altenberg de Bergbieten France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

¤FW - Didn't taste blind, and I thought the Riesling aromas where quite obvious, but the others weren't that sure. But it is burnt rubber and matchsticks rather than the German petroleum. There is also lots of sweet lemon, grapes, and ripe apples. On top of this there is some botrytis and candle-wax. High, quite tart acidity, fruit is less pronounced but with a good intensity and a slightly bitter finish. Not for the fruit lowers, but for the ones hooked on acidity!

Flight 3 - Reds 1/2 (4 notes)

Red
2006 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

¤FW - Very much Barolo on the nose with lots of cherries, candy cherries, flowery perfume and some paint thinner. Good amount of autumn leaves and dirt as well. Distinct acidity on the palate with quite generous, just slightly mature fruit with some tannins. In fact when unfolded, it feels like there is a surprisingly low amount of tannins. Slender body and good length. Fairly approachable right now.

¤FW - This is truly outstanding! And even more importantly, crazy tasty!
Nose is complex and almost magical with some very ripe fruit, raspberries, strawberries, sweet cherries and wolf berries. Lots of dirty, funky, earthy aromas together with some really nice almost peppery spiciness and a slight smoky touch of sausages. I could sit around sniffing this forever!

On the palate the wine is surprisingly big and generous, high but round acidity, very nice mature fruitiness and a long and harmonious finish. Can't say it to many times, a lovely wine!

2010 Jules Desjourneys Fleurie Les Moriers France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

¤FW - Crazy wine, and definitely of high quality. Some really uniqueness going on in the nose, coffee, chocolate cookies, cinnamon, butter dough, vanilla, yoghurt and raisins. Almost full bodied with a high but in no way sharp acidity. Overall the wine is very smooth and very fruity. Great intensity and subsequently a long finish. Nothing to complain about here, but this is just a bit to strange for me!
Red
2007 Delas Frères Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

¤FW - Big vocal nose of blackcurrants, plums, bay leaves and some barnyard hay. Knowing what it was I felt a bit disappointment that there weren't any syrah spiciness to be found, but still a very nice and fresh nose. Overall the wine had a great freshness to it. Medium body, with distinct, tart tannins and a really good intensity. A few more years in the cellar and this will probably be a even greater!

Flight 4 - Reds 2/2. (4 notes)

Red
2010 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
¤FW - Undoubtedly a big wine, but for me the alcohol is not yet integrated enough to warrant any high points.

Nose is not at all closed though, with lots of ripe fruit, prunes, apples, almost fermenting fruit. There is some slight of notes here as well, not defects but funky stuff. VA, rubber, potato peels and cardboard. On top of this there is a bunch of very foody, meaty stuff with ginger taking the lead. Complex nose to say the least.

Palate is brimming with fruit, but a decent acidity holds it in place. Full bodied, with a high intensity and good length. But as I said initially there is too much alcohol here, and it rears its ugly face both as a very warm and sweet fruity finish and as a somewhat sticky aroma.

¤FW - This is definitely the lighter style of Brunello, and guessing-wise I ended up in northern Italy and Piemonte.

Lots of sour fruit on the nose, cherries, cranberries and red apples. But there is also a some flowers and lavender perfume. Given a bit of time plenty of blackcurrants turns up as well. Good, fresh acidity, fairly astringent tannins and a medium body. Good length and intensity.
A very pleasant wine, but would have wished for a bit more maturity considering it's age.

¤FW - This really embodies what I love about northern Rhone. A spicy nose, generous fruit but a fresh and cool style!

Lots of black pepper, raw golden chanterelles, green pepper sausage with some fennel. But there is also plenty of fruit, currants, blackberries and wild strawberries.
Palate is very dry, but with a round, just slightly mature supple fruit, really good intensity and a fresh long finish. Great harmony and balance, and this really hit the spot for me.

2007 Elio Altare L'Insieme Italy, Piedmont, Vino da Tavola

¤FW - This is one weird wine! Nose points in all directions. There is some Bordeaux/super tuscan cabernet. Ceder and blackcurrants together with some almost synthetic fruit, melons, lime, pears and cherries. High intensity on the palate with distinct tannins and acidity. Full bodied with a long finish. Quirky, but high quality! Really fun to taste blind!

Flight 5 - The bonus flight! (4 notes)

2011 Domaine Binet-Jacquet Faugères Reserve France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Faugères

¤FW - Another odd wine. Dense blackcurrant on the nose, almost chilean style. But there is also some wood, pine, barnyard and a slight spiciness. Palate is almost inky with fruit, but still with a very fresh acidity. Medium-full body and overall very well balanced and approachable.
Red
2010 Bosco Agostino Barolo Neirane Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
¤FW - Not enough focus, so won't score. Nice Barolo nose with cherries, woody oak, spices, cinnamon and slight lavender. Tart, high acidity with a medium body and good intensity. A very nice wine!
White - Off-dry
1997 Winzer Krems Grüner Veltliner Auslese halbtrocken Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

¤FW - Total catastrophe! Light nose with some fennel, citrus, honey and botrytis. Amazingly short on the palate, just disappears. Either the wine is in such delicate balance between the different components that they take out each other perfectly, or more likely it is both of low quality and over the top. No concentration to talk about. And completely dry, but without any acidity. It's just nothing. A new experience for me though!
