K&L Hollywood

Introduction

This tasting took place outside, so these notes are probably even more sketchy than usual.

Flight 1 (14 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Ruinart Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
Tasting note: Nice nose with a nice hint of brioche and citrus/apple. Great minerality and acidity on the palate. Fine bubbles.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Ruinart Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
Fruitier nose than the Blan de Blancs but even more subtle brioche notes. Very bright acidity and very nice bubbles.
White - Sparkling
2000 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
Big nose with lots of toast, but also some nice limestone minerality. Definitely the most pronounced nose of the night. Good acidity on the palate, but still some creaminess with very fine bubbles.

2005 Elisabeth Goutorbe Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne
Great fruit (apples, pears) on the nose with a very fine minerality and acidity on the palate. Leaned a bit to the sweet side, but in a very pleasant way. Very fine bubbles. For the price, this was one of the highlights of the night.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Thienot Champagne Brut France, Champagne
Very nice minerality up front and good fine bubbles.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Thienot Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
Nice fruit and excellent lift, more interesting than the NV Brut by the same producer.
White - Sparkling
1999 Thienot Champagne Cuvée Alain Thiénot France, Champagne
This was my favorite wine of the tasting. Very soft elegant nose with great fruit and fantastic depth. Just a hint of brioche, but not at the level I find distracting. Great citrus fruit and grapefruit with vibrant, but not overpowering acidity. Very fine bubbles
White - Sparkling
N.V. Franck Bonville Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Very soft on the nose but great fruit on the palate. The bubbles were a little in the coarse direction, and this seemed a bit flat after a few minutes in the glass.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Franck Bonville Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Les Belles Voyes France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Very nice oak spice on the nose complemented by great citrus fruit. Very nice bubbles, definitely one of the highlights of the night. Much better than the other blanc de blancs by the same producer we tried tonight.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Franck Bonville Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut Prestige France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
A bit more fruity than the regular bottling. Same issue though: the bubbles were a bit coarser than others I tasted and this seemed a bit flat after a few minutes in the glass.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Premier France, Champagne
Not exactly the style we like with a little too much yeast on the nose. Still, nice acidity.
White - Sparkling
1999 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart France, Champagne
One of my favorite wines of the evening. A little less brioche than the Brut Reserve, which adds a nice elegance to the nose. Fantastic stony minerality combined with great fruit on the nose. Great bubbles and a fantastic finish.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
This is usually one of our favorite Rose champagnes. This was much less rich in style and much fruitier than the Brut Reserve. Nice bubbles, but a little coarser than, say, the Ruinart Rose. Excellent finish.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Réserve France, Champagne
Great fruit on the nose, but more brioche than I remember with this in the past, pushing toward yeasty. Good minerality and good acidity, but the bubbles were coarser than, say, the Ruinart.
