Introduction
Another terrific tasting of some of the best Italian wines. Top producers, top wines, top venue -- thanks to James Suckling and Andrew McMurray for putting together this amazing event. The notes are sparse -- enjoyed talking to the producers at the expense of copious writing. It was simply impossible not to get wrapped up in the passion of the people who made or produced these gems. Most of these wines were simply excellent, and the ratings reflect this fact. I've noticed also that the top rated wines often shared some similar traits: they were mostly elegant, smooth, complex, and multilayered. Yet, often I found pleasure in many unique expressions of this wonderful grape and in the unique vision of people who crafted these wines -- just loved some wines for being oddly aromatic, or spicy, or smoky, or feral, or all of the above. For me this was more of a celebration of many incredible expressions of the grape and soil (this applies to both Piedmont and Tuscany wines). Chalk it up to a difference in perspective.
Flight 1 - Outstanding (8 notes)
Red
2008 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Liste
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Viscous, extracted, mineral blueberry and blackberry extract -- don't often think of Barolo and a berry liquor. The mouthfeel reminds of Conterno's Romirasco. Unique and outstanding. Bravo. (Black bottle, '08. incorrectly wrote up as '07 originally.)
Red
2010 Mauro Molino Barolo La Serra
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Elegant, feminine feel. Spicy and aromatic, bursting with flavor. Balanced, tannins are youthful but not overbearing. Pure and impressive.
Flight 2 - Very Good (8 notes)
Red
2010 Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Sweet, dark cherry, walnuts. Dark ripe fruits, dense, sweet. Wished for more perfume and spice.
Flight 3 - Other (7 notes)
Red
2011 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Young and creamy, lacking backbone and perfume. Strawberry compote. Seems generic. Prefer a delicate Albesani. I'm missing all the buzz here.
Red
2007 Elio Grasso Barolo Riserva RĂ¼ncot
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Ripe fruit, but tastes soft and seemingly over extracted. Lacked the spine -- spiciness, minerality and structure. Muted aromatics. Not a fan of this style of Barolo.
Red
2010 Gaja Barbaresco
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Cooked strawberries, wood, flowers. Good texture, but seems simple overall.
