Great Wines of Italy Tasting 2015 -- Piedmonte

NYC

Introduction

Another terrific tasting of some of the best Italian wines. Top producers, top wines, top venue -- thanks to James Suckling and Andrew McMurray for putting together this amazing event. The notes are sparse -- enjoyed talking to the producers at the expense of copious writing. It was simply impossible not to get wrapped up in the passion of the people who made or produced these gems. Most of these wines were simply excellent, and the ratings reflect this fact. I've noticed also that the top rated wines often shared some similar traits: they were mostly elegant, smooth, complex, and multilayered. Yet, often I found pleasure in many unique expressions of this wonderful grape and in the unique vision of people who crafted these wines -- just loved some wines for being oddly aromatic, or spicy, or smoky, or feral, or all of the above. For me this was more of a celebration of many incredible expressions of the grape and soil (this applies to both Piedmont and Tuscany wines). Chalk it up to a difference in perspective.

Flight 1 - Outstanding (8 notes)

Red
2008 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Liste Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Viscous, extracted, mineral blueberry and blackberry extract -- don't often think of Barolo and a berry liquor. The mouthfeel reminds of Conterno's Romirasco. Unique and outstanding. Bravo. (Black bottle, '08. incorrectly wrote up as '07 originally.)
Red
2008 Beni di Batasiolo Barolo Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Dark, nutty, woody; animal aromas, masculine wine. Flowers on the nose, very enjoyable.
Red
2009 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Tighter than Colonnello; cranberries, dried rose petals, earthy. Tannic and big, coiled.
Red
2010 Renato Ratti Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Spicy and rich, stems and animal fur, chewy, long and mineral. Typical pungent Ratti aromatics, but has the length and presence to balance the flavors.
Red
2010 Mauro Molino Barolo La Serra Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Elegant, feminine feel. Spicy and aromatic, bursting with flavor. Balanced, tannins are youthful but not overbearing. Pure and impressive.
Red
2010 Mauro Molino Barolo Bricco Luciani Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Bright, beautiful wine. Bing cherry, cardamon, roses. Lingers on. Perfume, dried flowers aromatics.
Red
2010 Roberto Voerzio Barbera d'Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell'Annunziata Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba
From a magnum. Big, amazingly extracted and mineral. Jammy and delicious, bright tangy taste of wild berries. Balance between rich fruit and acidity. Tuscan producers were lining for this wine.
Red
2004 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Riserva 10 Anni Fossati Case Nere Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Complex, evolved fruit, flavors of steeped tea, violets, dark cherries. Tannins are still a little green and stand out in the finish against a melded fruit;easily needs another 5+ years to come together.

Flight 2 - Very Good (8 notes)

Red
2009 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Colonnello Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Dark cherry, mineral, nutty. Burgundian come to mind. Ripe and powerful, perhaps at the expense of minerality. Tannic now, needs time.
Red
2008 Beni di Batasiolo Barolo Vigneto Corda della Briccolina Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Chewy and vibrant, with good underlying acidity; bing cherries, roses. Brighter and less nutty than Brunate.
Red
2011 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Santo Stefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Feminine wine, balanced and silky. Strawberry aromas; not showing any spice.
Red
2009 Prunotto Barbaresco Bric Turot Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Feminine, spicy and tangy. Elegant mouthfeel, yet sophisticated. Good.
Red
2005 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Expected more rustic; instead this is balanced and approachable. Dark cherry, wood, cardamon pods. Not as complex as Liste, but very good.
Red
2010 Michele Chiarlo Barolo Tortoniano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Some dark fruit, long finish. Ripe fruit with an earthy tinge. Good.

Red
2010 Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Sweet, dark cherry, walnuts. Dark ripe fruits, dense, sweet. Wished for more perfume and spice.
Red
2010 Damilano Barolo Cannubi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Primary, dark cherry, hint of animal fur, chestnuts. Seems linear.

Flight 3 - Other (7 notes)

Red
2010 Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cerequio Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Bright, cranberry and orange zest. Tannic, made for the long haul.
Red
2010 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Young and tannic. Brighter fruit than Cannubi, lighter as well. Missing the tight core.
Red
2009 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Sweet and round wine. Dense and extracted, with all the presence felt upfront. Missed the length and minerality.
Red
2011 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Young and creamy, lacking backbone and perfume. Strawberry compote. Seems generic. Prefer a delicate Albesani. I'm missing all the buzz here.
Red
2009 Prunotto Barolo Bussia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Strawberries, roses. Slightly candied; seems generic.
Red
2007 Elio Grasso Barolo Riserva RĂ¼ncot Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Ripe fruit, but tastes soft and seemingly over extracted. Lacked the spine -- spiciness, minerality and structure. Muted aromatics. Not a fan of this style of Barolo.
Red
2010 Gaja Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Cooked strawberries, wood, flowers. Good texture, but seems simple overall.
