Introduction

This was a Mpls wine Club event featuring a nice mix of Red Burgs. Great food, great fun was had by all!

Flight 1 (10 notes)

White
2012 Chalk Hill Sauvignon Blanc USA, California, Sonoma County, Chalk Hill
90 points
Pale straw color. Very small pour. Just had enough to get interested in this SB. A interesting blend of 85% sauvignon blanc, 11% sauvignon gris and 4% sauvignon musque, this was pretty nice. The nose is quite bright showing grapefruit, cat pee, lychee, lime, and herbs. The palate has citrus, gooseberry, mineral, cat pee, lime, and an herbal note, bright clean and lively.
Red
2006 Thibault Liger-Belair Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
91 points
Dark red color with mildly bricked margin. 45 min decant; 2oz pour over 30 minutes. This was very good with the nose bringing light earthiness, baked cherry, dark red fruits, sou bois, wood spice, and iron. The palate has iron, cherry, earth, light-medium bodied, tangy, fine tannins and a spiced medium finish. My #3 WOTN, 91+pts.

Dark red color. 45 min decant. Followed 1 glass over 90 minutes. This was only wine I eventually dumped, just not doing it for me. Rather vegetal and stemmy, some good funk and plenty of wood on the nose. The palate is rather sour, sour red dark fruits, high acid, sharper on the finish, and thin in the middle with the same vegetal streak. I didn't t really see this improve either.

2009 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Medium dark red. 45 min decant, 2oz pour over 45 minutes. This was bright and youthful, red fruits, vanilla, damp forest floor, subtle mushroom, that later becomes perfumed and more floral. The palate has tart berry, underbrush, dark raspberry, spice, oak, firm tannins and good acid, with a medium plus finish. Very approachable now with a good hour or more decant, but better in a couple years. Group #3 WOTN.
Red
1996 Domaine Michel Gaunoux Corton-Renardes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
92 points
Medium dark red color. 2 oz pour over 45 minutes. This had a brief decant. A very complex and provocative wine with iodine, (some mentioned root beer), mineral, earth, leather, sauvage, that develops a pretty ripe red cherry fruit nose with about 30 minutes in glass. The palate is not shown up by the nose here with iodine, black cherry, pomegranate, oak, more acid, firm tannin, and more sauvage on the long finish. No hurry here. My and group WOTN.

Medium red color. 45 min decant, 2 oz pour over an hour. This was probably my favorite nose of the evening, really great earthiness, some funk, wow, very floral, great dried earth, red fruits that come together in a wonderful perfume. The palate is fine, but couldn't even begin to compete with the nose for the first 30 minutes, but by an hour in when I was down to the end there was a transformation going on that looked to be very promising. The palate starts with wood, meat, firm tannin, sharper and thin mid, spice and pepper on the finish, but later rounds up and evens out nicely. I would have liked to have a larger pour to see this evolve. 90-91(+?)pts.

Dark red color. 45 min decant, 2oz pour over an hour. Dried earth, floral, violets, hint of stems, vanilla, brooding dark fruit. The palate sines with ripe, lush black and red fruits, strawberry, cedarbox, vanilla, and a long finish. My #2 WOTN and group #4, young, 91-93pts.

2008 Mongeard-Mugneret Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
90 points
Dark red color. 45 min decant, 2oz pour over 40 minutes. Savory on the nose with baked cherry pie, exotic spices, dried herbs. The palate is also savory, raspberry, dry, good acid, oak, some heat, beef stock, earthy. Very good, not a wow, and I agree with recent notes that this might not get much better.

Medium dark gold color, PNP, 2 oz pour. Delightful as usual! Fresh and bright with tropical fruits, pineapple, mango, passion fruit, hints of petrol. The palate is lush and honeyed, not heavy, balanced, petrol, tropical, pineapple, nectarine, orange, glides across the palate. 94pts.
