Introduction

It was a great pleasure to get together with okd and new friends. Huge thanks to Bob Fyke for inventing and organizing this offline. As always. tasting wines blind is educational and humbling. A perfect example is Paumanok wines - i brought the '02 and Keithe brought the '00. Neither one of us realized that the other wine is from the same producer. A trully fun offline with a lot of really good wines. South africa seems like a region i keep saying i must taste more from. Our WOTN was from there and it trully does an amazing job combining the fruit and power with great acidity and backbone. Australia provided some humbling examples as well - balanced, not at all jammy and rather "old-worldish". anyway - to the wines

Flight 1 - Reds (blind) (11 notes)

Red
2002 Paumanok Assemblage USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork

i always liked this wine, and it still pushed the same buttons for me. currants, good aromatics, light food friendly wine with a good minerality and backbone. the guesses were an older ('70s) cali.

this put me on the fence... at one point i found a ton to like here..but then there were things i just didnt like at all. the bdx bandaid and rich blackberry were excellent but the bitter edge on the finish put me off. perhaps its the % of cab franc which i rarely like.
Red
2001 Kanonkop Paul Sauer South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch, Simonsberg-Stellenbosch

one of my favorites tonight - this is trully excellent. anyone know where to get some? didnt find any on cellartracker.
rich eucaliptus on the nose, seems like a ton of fruit but the palatte is smooth and with beautifull mineral tones, excellent balabnce and acidity, blackberries, tobaco. this is trully delicious.
Red
1997 Ferrari-Carano Trésor USA, California, Sonoma County

this started off slowly - needs time it seems! (oldest wine tonight) cab nose, very bdx like, but rich young, tannic and with a lot of good acidity, if all integrates and melows down this will be very delicious. still, this is very good now.
Red
2000 Paumanok Assemblage USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork

humbling - had no clue what this is although i've had it before. but in my defence this tasted nothing like my previous note... the nose was excellent - perfume and sweet ripe frut, and the acidity was good but the middle fell out for me.. i thought cold climate - washington. this seemed less evolved that the '02... last bottle i had was more evolved... who knows right? (plastic cork vs reg cork)
Red
2003 Domaine du Castel Grand Vin Judean Hills Israel, Judean Hills

rich sweet, powerfull wine, with amarone-like flavor. very impressive for an Israely wine - surely the best one i've had. just a bit too mucch for me :)
Red
2000 San Giusto a Rentennano La Ricolma Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
89 points
good fruit, bit of medicine and a bit of heat. not doing much for me.
Red
2002 Benziger Family Winery Tribute USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Mountain
90 points
too young, tons of potential but not showing much today at all. pepper, rich fruit, tons of delicious tannins, bit of alc. put it away.. great potential here
Red
2002 Cullen Wines Diana Madeline Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

one of my personal favorites tonight - sweet nose, lovely fruit, excellent balance and refreshing quality. amazed that its australian - just a lovely wine!
Red
1999 Spring Mountain Vineyard Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District

well at least i scored ths wine the same as last time. it has mellowed since last year, still full of delicious fruit, cigar notes, blueberries and currants. not over-the top - with good balance. this is a very good cali style wine.
Red
1998 Parker Coonawarra Estate Terra Rossa First Growth Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

hmm Tanzer 89, WA 95-97... thats a large gap - and i am sowhere in the middle. my second favorite wine of the night - this was trully a beauty. clean ripe fruit, no raisins here at all, wonderfull acidity, rich favors of cassis and plum...this is just very good - and has more potential with further time. an outstanding effort.

Flight 2 - Dessert (0 notes)

the dessert WOTN was served blind - Dave trully took us for a ride with this one.
Frimas ice-cider - this was amazingly good. apples, apple pie and strawberies and cream on the palate. great acidity keeping it fresh. seriously - a WOW for me. (92-93 points)
