Introduction

The last event of the season, our Spring Party. This time I wanted to bring a selection of wines from my cellar, 10 bottles and 10 stories. The stories are too long to write here, but here are the bottles. Each one has a special memory associated with it, it was a great pleasure to share these with the others.

Flight 1 - Starting with two South American wines, but not typical! The first was a garage wine made by a colleague's brother, amazing stuff! (2 notes)

Red
2008 Arte Da Vinha Benedito Fitarelli Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, Serra Gaúcha
92 points
Decanted for about 40 mins. Wow, this wine made an impression! A garage wine from southern Brazil and what a wine! Strong barnyardy dark berries, very complex on the nose. The palate was quite austere, elegant, with medium tannins, but with good dark fruits. A surprise and well received by everybody!
Red
2009 Don Pascual Tannat Edicion Limitada-Single Barrel Uruguay, Canelones, Juanicó
89 points
Decanted for about 40 mins. The nose showed sweet strawberry, gave a clean feeling, very enjoyable. The palate had lots of tannins, the fruitness tended towards austere, very tasty, with a finish of roasted coffee. A very nice wine and in a good spot now.

Flight 2 - Then on to the region that got me into wine, Languedoc. Superb examples here. (2 notes)

Red
2005 Gérard Bertrand Coteaux du Languedoc La Clape Château l'Hospitalet Grand Vin France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Coteaux du Languedoc La Clape
90 points
Decanted for an hour. Yum, lots of good rounded cassis on the nose, the oak has integrated, very nice. The palate followed, mellow,e asy, very enjoyable. A very good wine right now!

Red
2006 Domaine Borie de Maurel Minervois Cuvée Maxime France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Minervois
90 points
Decanted for an hour. Very expressive on the nose, lots of coffee, licorice and dark fruit. The palate was strong, with lots of fruit, good tannins, very intense. Could certainly take a few more years in the cellar, but alas this is my last bottle.

Flight 3 - Next up my current region of interest, Croatia. One wine was a flop, previous vintages were good. But the other wine was great! (2 notes)

Red
2011 Županović Babić Vrhunsko Vino Croatia, Dalmatia, Sjeverna Dalmacija, Primošten
82 points
Decanted for 1.5 hours. Oops, what's this? Light strawberry, fruit wine feel to it, even like a strawberry liquor. Same on the palate. Erm, not what I was expecting from a Babic, quite a disappointment.
Red
2007 Plančić Plavac Mali Pharos Croatia, Dalmatia, Srednja i južna Dalmacija, Hvar
89 points
Decanted for 1.5 hours. A very nice typical Plavac Mali, signature lingoberry is there, tasty and good.

Flight 4 - A couple of heavy hitters from the cellar, and both made their weight known. (2 notes)

Red
2004 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
Decanted for an hour. Quality shines through here, elegant cassis, good tannins, a touch of barnyard. Made an impression on several tasters.

2005 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
90 points
Decanted for an hour. Seems to be a very typical Musar, with barnyard and VA, feels very young with some sweetness and lots of tannins. I think this will age well.

Flight 5 - Ending on the fruits of conference trips. Good memories from these bottles! (2 notes)

Red
2005 Mauro Veglio Barolo Vigneto Gattera Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
Decanted for an hour. Ouch, this was too young, totally wound up. Still showing great promise, with great rose petals on the nose. The palatye had a huge barrage of tannins, but with elegant light fruits behind it. Needs more time in the cellar.
Red
2008 Damianitza ReDark Bulgaria, Struma River Valley
91 points
Decanted for an hour. A very enjoyable wine, tasty with great dark fruit and lots of tannins. Seemed to be at its peak now.

There were 25 of us, so tiny portions of each bottle, but still enough to taste and enjoy each wine!
