Introduction

Cultivino held an excellent tasting with a series of three winemaker workshops.

Flight 1 - Etienne Thiébaud (4 notes)

Red
2014 Domaine des Cavarodes (Etienne Thiébaud) Côtes du Jura Rouge Les Lumachelles France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
Glowing robe. Cool, menthol, bramble, with some berry perfume. A great nose, slightly wild and savage. Wow, this is pretty austere on the palate w/ very fresh acidity and a lingering, dark, leathery aftertaste. Very persistent acidity. Poulsard and Trousseau.

2014 Domaine des Cavarodes (Etienne Thiébaud) Arbois Trousseau de Messagelin France, Jura, Arbois
A more reticent nose. I don't quite have the vocabulary to describe these wines. Savage berries and some wild strawberry but with an almost animalistic edge. The palate on this one explodes, fresh and juicy with very dark berries. It finishes with a very savory, leathery, slightly sweaty element and some noticeable oxidative elements.

2014 Domaine des Cavarodes (Etienne Thiébaud) Chardonnay Côtes du Jura Les Lumachelles France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
Very compressed aromatics, reticent, with bug spray and lemon zest elements. Wow, that is an intense acid monster. Very mineral, seashell, Chablis-esque, steely. The finish again shows lemon and some very clear oxidative elements. This is not an easy wine, sort of an Orange-lite, very nervous wine.

2013 Domaine des Cavarodes (Etienne Thiébaud) Arbois Chardonnay de Messagelin France, Jura, Arbois
Much richer color, again with a reticent nose. With time and warmth this shows some oxidative personality on the upfront aromatics. Wow, the palate is quite rich, Meursault-esque (not really but in that direction). World class minerality. Very taut and noble.

Flight 2 - Markus Ruch (3 notes)

Red
2014 Weinbau Markus Ruch Pinot Noir Klettgau Switzerland, Eastern Switzerland, Schaffhausen, Klettgau
2014 was a pretty brutal year with drenching rains through July and much of August, and then an outbreak of Drosophila suzukii (fruit flies). However, you wouldn't know that by tasting this wine. Gorgeous perfume with serious Pinot character. A savory note in the background.

2013 Weinbau Markus Ruch Pinot Noir Hallau Haalde Switzerland, Eastern Switzerland, Schaffhausen, Hallau
Whole cluster. Wow, this just EXPLODES from the glass. Smoky, wild stemmy and truly breathtaking. Incredible concentration without the slightest hint of heaviness. Tannins (whole cluster fermentation brings extra structure to the party) show up on the finish, subtle, suave and polished but quite persistent and grippy. This is a truly stunning wine.

Red
2013 Weinbau Markus Ruch Pinot Noir Gächlingen Schlemmweg Switzerland, Eastern Switzerland, Schaffhausen, Hallau
The first bottle was a bit off, so they poured a new one. Dark and reserved, much more subtle and aromatically reserved than the Haalde. Strong umami notes of mushroom and forest. Incredible precision and focus. The texture here is silky and caressing on the palate, and it's surprisingly tannic on the long finish. Definitely a wine to spend some time in the cellar.

Some VA and smoke. Broad, warm and generous. A tarry and powerful wine, 50% from Barolo and 50% from Barbaresco.

2008 Roagna Barolo Pira Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Very classic aromatics. Flowers, tar, cranberry and a hint of orange juice. Stellar energy, nice structure, dusky and fine. Deeply mineral and reserved. Very old school, very structured.

Red
2009 Roagna Barbaresco Pajè Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Here we go, big time flowers and tar. They keep maybe 1-3% of the stems for this. Really suave and polished on entry with a nice bite on the finish.

2004 Roagna Barbaresco Crichët Pajé Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Soaring aromatics. Very primary with a pine forest element. Supple, highly polished, very concentrated. Sneaky tannins, deep and powerful.
