Introduction

A tasting of some of the newer producers where many of them really impressed.

Flight 1 (1 note)

Red - Fortified
1985 Kopke Porto Colheita Portugal, Douro, Porto
92 points
Fresh and delicious tawny style with impressions of orange peel, vanilla and a touch of plum fruit.
A very charming wine that is easy to drink.
Bottled in 2014.

Flight 2 (6 notes)

Red - Fortified
N.V. Bulas Porto 30 Year Old Tawny Portugal, Douro, Porto
96 points
A very impressive wine packed with burnt figs, coffee, vanilla which just keeps changing and evolving in the glass. There is a touch of walnut in the aftertaste which really completes everything nicely.
It is certainly to the sweet side but it does seem to have a good amount of acidity to balance it out.
Charming and interesting wine. Some might find it a bit too sweet but I loved it.

N.V. Agri-Roncão Porto DR - 30 Year Old Tawny Portugal, Douro, Porto
88 points
Fresh plum fruit with a touch of caramel. Overall it seems quite singular and the alcohol is dominating a bit to much.
Red - Fortified
N.V. Vasques de Carvalho Porto 30 Year Old Tawny Portugal, Douro, Porto
86 points
Fresh plum fruit with a touch of caramel and coffee but also a drying tannic structure.
Seems to be off balance and just seems a bit funky.

N.V. Quinta do Javali Porto 30 Year Old Tawny Portugal, Douro, Porto
94 points
Very dense and thick juice packed with dark tertiary aromas.
The dominating flavors are dark sweet cola with a touch of cherry and caramel but also plenty of dark chocolate.
Very creamy and delicious but also quite sweet which certainly can be to much but in my case it accentuates the lovely edges in the wine.
Quite an extreme style of wine but I liked it.
Red - Fortified
N.V. Quinta das Lamelas Porto 30 Year Old Tawny Portugal, Douro, Porto
96 points
Very impressive and classic 30Y Tawny with a lovely freshness.
Showing plenty of flavors like candied orange peel, dark rum and dark brown sugar.
A very pure and clean wine with an impressive balance between sweetness and acidity.
Very classic and well-made wine.

N.V. Kopke Porto 30 Year Old Tawny Portugal, Douro, Porto

Orange peel, caramel and vanilla with a touch of coffee.
Has a good balance and creaminess but lacks a little aftertaste and depth.
Still, a very solid wine.

Closing

Personally, I preferred the Bulas due to the complexity and personality but the Lamelas was probably the best "made" wine.
