Introduction

Starting of with oysters and some snacks, we moved on to steamed cod with baked selleriac followed by filé of lamb with Heston Blumenthals perfect potato mash.

Flight 1 - Champagne (2 notes)

White - Sparkling

Consistent with previous notes. Still tight and fresh on the palate. No development since march 2015. I love the slightly bitter, salty finish.

Intially lots of beeswax on the nose, after a while more apple and some citrus. Gradually develops towards the richer spectrum with applepie, piecrust, marzipan and nuts. On the palate good vibe and freshness with some chalk and iodine in the mix while retaining the richness from the nose. Multilayered and complex. The finish again has more citrus and some brioche: lemon-apple piecrust. Great wine!

Flight 2 - Whites (1 note)

Initially a heavy cloud of sulphur. Decanting helps but the smell of burnt matches never quite goes away. I acctually like some sulphur, or at least I usually don't find it disagreable, but here it is clearly clouding some of the finer details of the wine. But underneath this whiff of the mines of hell there is much to like. Great yellow fruit with waxy winter apples, lots of citrus, some peach and a hint of white flowers. Good acidity and a pronounced minerality. Medium+ finish.

Good wine, but the sulphur is a bit too much right now, at least in this bottle. Give it more time.

Flight 3 - Reds (3 notes)

Red

Initially quite closely knit, despite about 90 minute decant. Mostly dark fruit, some violets and tannins. After some time more nuanced, with plum, blueberries, blackberries, leather, more voilets and some chocolate. Still quite pronounced tannins which adds a light bitterness. Quite decent finish, but not neverending.

A very good wine. A bit too one dimensional and dense for me to really take flight, but still, I'm very fortunate to be able to drink stuff like this once in a while.

Old bourgogne, a mythical creature. This particular bottle have survived the onslaugt of time to be consumed by us lucky few.

At first a very subdued nose of wet moss and forest floor, but after a short airing we get overripe strawberries, wet leaves, some charcuteries, leather, light tobacco, black pepper, some dried orange peel etc. The list goes on. Very complex, if not very intense. On the palate the intesity goes up. Very much alive! All the above, but with a lot more life and combined with a great pinot spiciness that lingers in the mouth. Red, ripe berries, medium acidity, very soft tannin. Great balance.

What a great wine. 49 years old and still kicking! Wow! What happened in 1966? And how much the world have changed since. One marvels..

Another great bottle of this wine. Lovely nose of mint, meat, blood, iron filings, leather, light tar, black truffle, cherry, lingonberry and raspberry. On the palate this perfectly combines intensity and power with poise and elegance. Good acidity, great mineal feeling, lovely finish with red, ripe berries, iron and earth. No signs of old age yet. Just lovely!

This is a great wine, but perhaps one could wish for a bit more intensity. I love the etheral notes of ripe raspberry and wild strawberry, but they are very fleeting. Just a tad more substance to the fruit and this would have flirted with perfection.
