Introduction

A great party with great people!

Overall the selection of WA wines wasn't the strongest. I've had better examples since. The unifying characteristic seemed to be ripeness. If you want it, you can get it in WA. In terms of winemaking many of these were over-the-top to the point of being simple and unbalanced.

Flight 1 - Blinds (3 notes)

2013 Capensis Chardonnay South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

Blind 1:
Elevated 14% (actually 14.5%) Alcohol, Chardonnay winemaking - maybe 20% new French oak, notable elevated acid - a really nice acid backbone to this. Fruit character is warm climate chardonnay - verging on pineapple, tropical fruit. To me this is explosive, fruity, New-World chardonnay, but done very well.
Guess: Santa Cruz Mtns. Chardonnay, 2013 (no noticeable development)

Semi aromatic - maybe slightly terpenic. Bitterness, medium acid, light and dry. Maybe an Albarino - basic bottling?

Blind:
Super intense sweet syrupy dark fruit - cassis and blueberry. Sweet and lush. Some tannic grip. Elevated acid. Oak - well-integrated.
I’m not the biggest fan of this, but it seems like maybe New World cab, which would probably make the best call California Cabernet, 2012.
Actual: 2012 Seghesio Zinfandel “Monte Rosso” (Sonoma Valley).
Surprising!

Sweet (ripe to overripe fruit, and maybe a hint of RS?), slight suggestion of exuberance that hints at carbonic / whole cluster, vanilla.

Within the context of New World Syrah, I don't really understand this - I liked Torbreck's lineup a bit better, in terms of fruit quality, complexity, and balance.

Some sweet caramel-fig development, and overall a raisinated quality to the dark plum / cassis fruit. Really intense fruit-driven nose. A bit more structured (acid-wise) than I remember the Duckhorn Merlot being.

The oak (60% new French barrels) is pretty well-integrated at this point.

Intense syrupy cassis. Super ripe. Restrained oak presence. Almost no structure at this point - very soft tannins.

Sweet, hint of stemmy vegetal notes, sweet gingerbread (reminds me of the Torbrecks) - a combination of raisination and new oak. Very soft. Clean style.

$25 - great value for this ripe style!

50% New French Oak (other 50% is 2nd and 3rd fill)
Merlot Picked between 24.7 and 24.9 Brix.
Cab Franc picked between 24.7 and 25.8 Brix.

Super ripe, slightly earthy, a bit of an off-aroma (plasticky? cardboard?). Possibly corked?
Rosé
2014 Efeste Rosé Oldfield Estate USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley

Somewhat bitter nose of grapefruit (thiols?) and a bit of cheese rind. Overall pretty fresh with great medium plus acid and medium body. Not super interesting aromatically.
76% Mourvedre, 24% Grenache.
4 months sur lie aging (hence the cheese rind).

2012 B. Leighton Petit Verdot Olsen Brothers Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley

Inky purple. Nose of dark, fresh turned earth, hints of underripe blueberry, with stems. A bit of a floral/brambly quality to it. Fruit is dark (blueberry and blackberry) but reticent, and tightly coiled, maybe closed. On the palate it’s a bit savage, with elevated acid, harsh medium plus tannins and a dose of bitterness. I can see its use as a blending grape!

Score: Between 8 and 8.5
50% new French oak (22 months) - didn’t show it!
14.5% alcohol
3.84 pH, .67 g/L TA - had an acidic kick to it!

No autolytic brioche notes (surprising considering this was aged 24 months en Tirage). Fresh. Dried apricots. Detergent. Interesting. Slightly acrid smelling. A bit sweet for me (20 g/L dosage, and tasted about like that).

A little light on terpenes. Some peachy aromas. Nose like an entry-level Viognier.
Dry on the palate, a bit transparent / glycerine-like (in my imagination). Light, medium plus acid, and just a touch of phenolic bitterness. Peach aromatics, rather than rose aromas. Not a bad wine but Gewurz can do so much more. Sort of like a cross between the structure of an Oregon Pinot Gris, and maybe some Albarino aromatics?
