Introduction

All wines tasted double blind, with the exceptions being those which we brought which are thus single blind.

Flight 1 - Warm ups (4 notes)

White
2014 Castello della Sala (Antinori) Chardonnay Bramìto del Cervo Italy, Umbria
Very pale color with aromas of flint and stone. Bright acidity with mineral and subtle fruit. Understated. Seems like a Sauv Blanc to me. Guessed Pouilly Fume.
White
2014 Mastroberardino Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Bianco Italy, Campania, Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio
89 points
Deeper color than the first wine, with more fruit and depth. Opens with a smoky note giving way grassy melon and citrus qualities. The palate mirrors the bouquet, adding good underlying acidity and a nice finish. It has heft but is not at all heavy and finishes with decent length. Guessed Bordeaux. 89-90 pts.
White
2014 DeMorgenzon Chardonnay DMZ South Africa, Western Cape
89 points
Opens with notes of tropical fruit- coconut and banana- that never fully dissipate but there are streaks of orchard fruit coming through. The orchard fruit follows on the palate with an interesting stony minerality on the finish. Nice. Guessed Chardonnay and was surprised to see this was from S. Africa.

White
2012 Torbreck Woodcutter's Semillon Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
85 points
Waxy lanolin and pear aromas dominate. There's some nice fruit on the attack and midpalate but the finish is austere and quite harsh. I like the fruit, but my score may be a couple of points too generous.

Flight 2 - Reds (6 notes)

Red
2013 Cameron Pinot Noir Dundee Hills USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
91 points
Opens with notes of cherry, spice and tobacco. Initially a bit thin across the midpalate and through the finish, but with air it filled out nicely with plenty of cherry and red berry quaities. Has a dark streak running through it. Excellent.

I was very happy to see our bottle when this was revealed. Very nice, and no signs of brettanomyces, in any of its various strains, as others have mentioned.
Red
2000 Rust en Vrede Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Vineyards South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
83 points
Crimson core with noticeable bricking. Opens with tobacco, black currant and plum notes. Tannins are fully-integrated leaving plenty of fruit- plum and ripe dark fruits. It also has a stemmy quality and is definitely on the riper side of the spectrum. Falls apart in the glass rather quickly though, soon showing tea and then bouillon as the fruit fades. We had it pegged as a Cab-based blend but couldn't come up with its origin.

Assuming this is a representative sample, this is already in severe decline- drink now- probably just better used in your braising liquid.
Red
2005 Robert Sinskey Vineyards Cabernet Franc Vandal Vineyard USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
91 points
Notes of red and black fruit with perfumed florally overtones. Integrated and balanced, with a dark fruit qualities on the palate. There's an elegance to the wine that I like. Guessed Napa Cab Sauv blend.

One taster picked this out as Franc, but the rest of us were shocked when this was unveiled. This showed none of the green/herbal qualities of Franc. Even Domino, who dislikes Franc because of the green elements, enjoyed this, so while it is a good wine, this bottle did not show varietal character.
Red
2013 Cameron Pinot Noir USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
92 points
Aromas of strawberry, cranberry and cherry with spice and clay undertones. The fruit turns toward the darker side of the spectrum as it opens in the glass. Flavors of cherry and dark berry fruit, tobacco and spice with a long, balanced finish. Easy to pick out as Pinot, a couple thought CA but most of us guessed OR.

This and the Dundee Hills counterpart were the wines of the flight and showed very well (both opened approximately 30 minutes before the flight was poured), improving throughout the evening. Superb value at $27 delivered.
Red
2012 Château de La Chaize Brouilly Réserve de la Marquise France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Brouilly
91 points
This was immediately an intriguing wine. It had the light color of Pinot but smelled like a Rhone. Gamay actually entered my mind when I saw the color but I dismissed that just as quickly when I smelled the wine. Notes of spice, tapenade and pine needles. Cherry dominates the palate, ending somewhat short. Puts on weight as it sits, but remains incredibly light on the palate. The bouquet becomes more like a cross between Chateauneuf and Cornas with red fruit and loads of garrigue with a smattering of saline, tapenade-like notes. I had no guess as I didn't know what would be so definitively Rhone on the nose yet so light and Pinot-ish on the palate. I've had good Cru Beaujolais before, but none have had the characteristics this displayed. Perhaps I should find more Beaujolais to try- sadly this particular one is not imported. Our host indicated this bottle had been opened about 4-5 hours before the tasting. 91+ pts.
Red
2011 Bodegas Ordoñez Tineta Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
85 points
Notes of forest floor, black fruit and vanilla. No fruit on the attack with plum and black fruit qualities coming in on the midpalate and finish. There's a harshness to the finish that I do not care for. Meh.

Flight 3 - Reds (5 notes)

Red
2007 Beaucanon Cabernet Franc Cuvée Louis USA, California, Napa Valley
89 points
Deeply colored with notes of licorice and black fruit with a nice herbal undertone. Tannins are fine and sweet, supporting dark fruit and herb flavors. Nice fruit; good finish.
Red
2008 Dashe Cellars Grenache USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
90 points
A bit cloudy, this has some fine sediment that got stirred up. Aromas of cherry and rhubarb with smoky undertones. There's also a bit of a stemmy quality to this wine. Flavors of red fruit, cherry and smoked spices. Acidity is a bit sharp in this format, but I think this would complement a meal nicely so it doesn't concern me here. Guessed Sonoma Pinot.
Red
2006 Robert Biale Syrah Hill Climber Jack & Jill USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
88 points
Inky color. Aromas of chocolate, blackberry and plummy dark fruit. Has some tannin to shed yet, but there's some really nice sweet dark fruit on the palate along with a good bit of wood. The finish is a bit austere. Guessed Petite Sirah.
Red
2004 Bodegas Luzon Jumilla Alma de Luzon Spain, Murcia, Jumilla
flawed
This was a flawed wine, with a dominant streak of brettanomyces that has imparted a straw/hay-like quality, not unlike the afflicted bottles of '90 Montrose that I've encountered. It became worse and more obvious as it sat. There's sour dark fruit underneath, but I don't care to delve any deeper into this wine. Others found it less objectionable than I, but we all have our sensitivities (my wife's is TCA), so for me this was a deal breaker.
Red
2007 Truchard Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
88 points
Notes of herbs, black fruit and cassis. The cassis and dark fruit qualities follow through on the palate. This is quite firm and structured and in need of some time to soften. Guessed Napa Cab.

I was surprised when this was unveiled, as I've never known Truchard's Cabernets to show this much structure and dark fruit. I've thought of then as a bit more open and red-fruited. That said, given time, I think this will show nicely. Drink from 2020+.

Flight 4 - Dinner wines (2 notes)

Tasted nonblind.

Red
2009 Robert Biale Zinfandel Black Chicken USA, California, Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District
91 points
Nonblind with dinner following the tasting. Aromas of vanilla, black fruit and blueberry. Medium-bodied with pepper, spice and dark fruit flavors. Balanced, with a good finish.
Red - Fortified
N.V. Niepoort Porto Ruby Portugal, Douro, Porto
Brief note- cassis and dark jammy fruit on the nose and palate. A bit simple, but enjoyable nonetheless.
