Flight 1 - Warm ups (3 notes)
White
2011 Domaine Leflaive Mâcon-Verzé
90 points
Hints of banana, melon and citrus. Apple and mineral notes on the palate. Very nice; lengthy finish with good underlying acidity.
White
2013 Bouchard Père et Fils Pouilly-Fuissé
89 points
Nice fruit with touches of spice, wood and citrus. Spicy fruit, melon and citrus qualities.
Red
2001 Château Mouton Rothschild
92 points
So R&D had a double blind warm up red. They indicated the critics' reviews were a good bit apart, and they wanted to get the group's input and decide whether or not to keep the rest of their case or send it to auction. Garnet color, showing a bit of age. Aromas of tobacco, forest floor and red berry fruit. Sweet currant fruit, earth and macerated berry with a good finish. It's balanced and I enjoy this quite a bit. I guessed 1995 Pauillac. 92-93 pts.
Flight 2 - Reds (8 notes)
Tasted double blind, I was a bit surprised these were 2007s. I would have expected the fruit to be a bit more lush and opulent. As it was, I guessed 2009 Chateauneuf, so I was in the ballpark.
Red
2007 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée
93 points
Deep garnet color with an expressive bouquet featuring licorice, red berry fruit and florals. There's an enjoyable sweet/candied quality to the fruit in the bouquet that I like quite a bit. Red berry and cherry fruit on the palate; spice and earthy notes too. Develops spice and evergreen notes. Very nice.

2007 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau
90 points
Initially quite shy and muted. Displays a mélange of red and black fruit, white pepper and roasted meat. Currant, plum and mineral on the palate, becoming more open as it sits, though the bouquet never really comes around. Still, there's some good fruit on the palate and it's nicely balanced.

2007 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Another that is quite reticent. Evergreen forest, red and dark fruit and pepper comprise the bouquet. Medium-bodied with a nice burst of red fruit on the palate with a pleasant earthy quality in the finish. Spice notes become more pronounced as this opens. 89+ pts.

2007 Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Part des Anges

Notes of burnt rubber, black currants and pepper, developing a nice wild/feral quality to complement the dark fruit. The rubber note follows through on the palate and here I find it slightly distracting. Has a nice meaty note in the finish.

Golden honey, stone fruit and ripe white peach aromas. The palate follows the bouquet. Terrific acidity keeps this lively and bright and not at all cloying.
