Introduction

There is no theme. Every participant brings one or two bottles fully blind. The wines are split up in whites, reds and sweet wines (if those are brought). No other information. The idea is to go from light bodied and/or old to full bodied and/or young. So randomly someone tells he/she wants to start with the first wine. Then the rest follows when he/she thinks it is a proper moment to pour a wine you brought. And surprisingly enough this system works quite well in most cases. There are no flights. We taste the wines one at a time.

Flight 1 (17 notes)

White - Off-dry
2007 Alfred Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
88 points
Very clean bouquet and taste. Good sweetness and very good acidity to back it up. Well made wine.
White
2004 Nicolas Joly Clos de la Coulée de Serrant France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières-Coulée de Serrant
Has the color of a very old wine. Nice and fresh bouquet. Just a little sparkling in the start. Yellow tropical fruits. Bitterness in the finish. A bit alcoholic. Something special.
Red
1979 Jacques Cacheux & Fils Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Barnyard bouquet with still a hint of strawberries. Earthy and mushrooms and some raspberries in the taste. Firm acidity. Completely melted tannin. These are my notes of the first 10 minutes after uncorking. Half an hour later the wine was dead.
Red
1983 Château Le Bon Pasteur France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Mature bouquet with just a little bit of barnyard. Firm acidity and red fruits. The tannin is drying and sticky in the finish. Definitely past its prime, but if you like old ladies it is still ok. No score
Red
2000 Domaine des Roches Neuves Saumur-Champigny La Marginale France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny
87 points
Pleasant bouquet with ripe red fruits and a bit of sweetness. On the palate soft ripe fruit as well, round tannin which still offers a bite. Firm bitterness and a bit drying tannin in the finish.
Red
2006 Schloss Gobelsburg Cuvée Bertrand Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal
82 points
Dairy like buttermilk and yoghurt in the bouquet. A lot of acidity and red fruits in the taste. A firm dose of tannin. I prefer the white wines of this domain.
Red
2008 Daniel Bouland Morgon Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
86 points
A lot of candy in the bouquet; sweet cherry candy. Same in the mouth. And it is pleasant and very friendly. Very pure and clean. Not really complex.
Red
2008 Weingut Burggarten Neuenahrer Sonnenberg Frühburgunder Fass 69 Germany, Ahr
88 points
A lot of toasted oak in the bouquet as well as the taste. Very juicy, mainly red; ripe raspberries. Some herbs as well. Soft tannin and acidity. Needs some time so the oak gets more integrated.
Red
2003 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
92 points
Beautiful bouquet with a little barnyard, oak and red fruits. In the mouth very good juice. Red fruits and some pleasant sweetness. Soft and ripe tannin. Full bodied. Ready now, but no hurry.
Red
2003 Pian Delle Vigne (Antinori) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
91 points
Beautiful bouquet with good oak and ripe red fruits. Same in the mouth. Very harmonious. Soft and ripe tannin, little pleasant sweetness and bitterness in the finish. Complete wine. Ready now, but no hurry.
Red
1990 Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
92 points
Complex bouquet with smoky impressions, chocolate, tobacco, ripe black forest fruits, a little pleasant barnyard and oak. On the palate good juicy fruit, mature and perfect acidity and sweetness. Some caramel. Not a bit too old yet, but certainly at its prime.
Red
1999 Château Monbousquet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
92 points
Smoky and complex bouquet with cassis fruit as well. In the taste a lot of cassis and other red and black fruits as well. Full bodied, good tannin and a little pleasant sweetness. Complexity. Expensive oak. Ripe and soft tannin. This is a great wine still in its young maturity stage. (While posting this note I see that I scored it exactly the same as two years ago.)
Red
1998 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
89 points
Deep and mature bouquet with luxury oak and pleasant barnyard. On the palate also quite mature and not really Pauillac like. I am a bit shocked. I have two bottles myself an I thought this wine would still be much too young. I do not know the history of this particular bottle, but I think I should try one of my own bottles soon. It is a great wine now.
Red
2007 Domaine de Ferrand Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Beautiful deep bouquet. Same in the mouth. A lot of herbs and spices and sweetness. Delicious juice.
Red
2004 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
95 points
Deep and complex bouquet; black fruits, good oak, pleasant sweet liquorice. Same in the mouth. Juicy but also depth. Offers very pleasant drinking already, and will continue to do so for at least 5 - 10 years.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Hauner Malvasia delle Lipari Italy, Sicily, Malvasia delle Lipari
85 points
Something special. A little bit oxidised style. Melon. Fairly sweet, but not very fat. Special, but pleasant.
Red - Fortified
1983 Niepoort Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
93 points
Not an extremely expressive bouquet. A great pleasure in the mouth. Ruby like, but so soft and elegant. The tannin has completely melted. Good complexity. Chocolate in the finish. Completely ready now. No need to wait any longer.
