Introduction

HDH brought Jean-Marie in for a great dinner which included his great Domaine wines and an introduction to some very good negoc wines.

Although there are many great village wines, this one is consistently one of the best out there. The perfume is sweet like candy without being overdone. The same can be said about the fruit which is ripe and generous and dense, especially for a village wine. There is a sense of energy and tension brings balance. Well done.

2009 Domaine Fourrier Chambolle-Musigny Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

This wine has a lovely Chambolle floral musk. On the palate, this comes off a bit clunky as 2009s sometimes can tend to be where they are good wines but clinical and lacking a any real sense of charm or electricity. One taster noted that it's a touch lean and suffered in comparison the to the outstanding '12 Gevrey VV. The tannin present at the moment makes the wine a bit hard at the moment too. The raw materials are there but this wasn't showing it's best right now.

2011 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Goulots Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Fourrier's modernist tendencies are absolutely perfect for the 2011 vintage. Jean Marie mentioned that there is a trend in Burgundy toward whole cluster and cold maceration but he makes the wines the way he learned and the way he has always made them. There are no stems in his wines. There is also absolutely no green in this wine. To the contrary, it's lightly fruited and clean with balancing notes of mineral. This is a feminine wine and almost weightless on the palate. The tannin is fine and this conveys the signature Fourrier lush mouth feel. This is a wine for drinking in likely won't shut down however I'm not sure it is one for the ages.

2010 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

The nose is slightly muted and I get the sense that this wine will be shutting down soon. You can sense the structure in density in the wine on the palate. This wine was quite masculine compared to the '11 Goulot it was served with. The excellent 2010 vintage lends a depth of flavors including dark berry fruit and dark chocolate. As the wine sits in the glass, the tannin becomes present. It's time to lay these down and revisit them in 5-10 years.

2013 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
This is the second time I've had this wine recently and it just doesn't do it for me. Perhaps it's the 2013 vintage as I do enjoy Fourrier's CSJ in other vintages. There was decent berry fruit but I just couldn't get past the acidity. For me, the wine just seemed incomplete. Is also suffered by being served alongside the 07 'Sentiers and 05 CSJ. Perhaps it will come together in time.

I've heard that 2005s can show well now and now I believe it. There is tremendous amplitude on the nose which reeks of ripe berry fruit. It is expansive and fills the palate with those same dark ripe berries. There is a sense of purity to the fruit, not unlike you might find in new world wines. The texture of this wine is lush and coating but there is no tannin or hardness whatsoever. This is just delicious.

2007 Domaine Fourrier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

There is a lot going on in the nose of this wine including spice, sweet berries, and wild flowers. On the palate, there is a glossy dark berry fruit which attains concentration that is rare for the vintage. The finish lingers on the palate begging you to have another sip. This is stunning for the 2007 vintage and like other top 2007 wines is one for current drinking as there isn't a ton of stuffing. This is one of the best 07s I've tasted to date. Tom notes that this site borders Bonnes Marres and shares some of that greatness.

2013 Jean-Marie Fourrier Echezeaux Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
92 points
This is a negoc wine but David Ben Yair notes that is is from an outstanding parcel in Echezaux. The wine shows bakes fruit and spice on the palate. Stylistically, you can tell it is Fourrier based on the velvety mouth feel and fruit purity. This is a nice wine and showed good balance and openness for a 2013.

Here we have another good and open 2013. The fruit is substantial and sweet and reminds me of kirsch. This is primary now but also quite tasty and could get even better as it matures.

This is my second tasting of this wine this year with consistent performance. I am a big fan of the 2012s. This wine has excellent concentration and depth of fruit. It has the classic Gevrey iron and mineral presence. The nose has a lovely floral perfume. This is just another great bottle.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1959 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

The amplitude of the nose on this wine was shocking as the bottle was split among 20 or so tasters so the pour was quite small. That pungent nose included baking spices and candied fruit. The palate was still quite sweet for wine of almost 60 years but also included notes of botrytis, burnt sugar, caramel, cinnamon, and baked apples. The wine also had great color as it was orange with just a touch of browning. This was an obviously correct and stunning bottle.

Closing

It was very interesting to hear Jean-Marie's approach to wine making. He is not following the current trend of whole cluster fermentation and cold maceration. He is making the wines the same way he has made them since he started. There are no stems in the wine. For me, this bring tremendous purity of fruit to the wines.

Tom generously brought magnums of 2005 Clos St. Jacques and 2007 Sentiers Vieilles Vignes. Another taster generously shared a magnificent bottle of 1959 d'Yquem.
